E10 petrol lawn mower: what to put in the tank

You are at a UK pump, or you are laying a petrol mower up until March. Old fuel looks like a failed starter. What changed at the pump

E10 became the standard 95 octane petrol in Great Britain in September 2021, and in Northern Ireland in November 2022. The 10 is up to 10 per cent ethanol. GOV.UK’s E10 guidance says garden equipment, including lawnmowers, may not be compatible. If the manual does not say E10 is acceptable, use E5 super unleaded, the 97+ grade, which is still labelled at the pump. Ethanol attracts water and ages faster in a can or a tank. BALI notes that storage past about 30 days is the practical failure. A Honda E10 statement does not cover these Hyundai or Draper listings.

What these listings say

Draper’s own page for the 08671 says that model is E10 compatible. The amazon.co.uk file for B0957QTT1N, the £207.40 title, does not say it. The bullet claims an electric start button, and Draper’s page does not mention one. The manual in the carton is the fuel approval. The three Hyundai files are silent. B0CYP9QYYT, B0B6SVW14M, and B0D73R86LK never say E10 or E5. Silence is not approval, and it is not a ban. Until the manual says otherwise, GOV.UK’s fallback is E5 super unleaded (97+). The month in the can

Treat about 30 days as the limit for petrol left in the mower or in an opened can. Stiga’s UK article, written for Stiga owners, says petrol goes stale at about 30 days and, for a long lay-up, tells those owners to run the tank dry. That run-dry step is Stiga’s instruction for Stiga machines. Follow your own manual if it prefers a stabiliser. In March a click can be last October’s petrol. Drain or run out what the manual allows, refill with the grade the manual names, and only then judge the button.

Winter is a battery job as well

Fuel is half the lay-up on a button-start mower. The starter battery is the other half. Hayter’s UK FAQ tells owners to charge an electric-start battery at both ends of the season. The Hyundai HYM430SPE example, which is not the text of these bundle ASINs, says charge before first use and after every ten uses. The how to start an electric start petrol mower page is the sequence once the fuel is fresh and the battery has been charged. The strimmer and the backpack blower in two of these bundles are 52 cc two-stroke machines. Their mixed fuel must not go in the four-stroke mower tank. Keep a separate can and label it.

Common questions

Can I use the 95 at the pump?
Only if your mower’s manual says it accepts E10. The standard 95 octane in Great Britain and Northern Ireland is E10. GOV.UK says lawnmowers may not be compatible. If the manual is missing or silent, use E5 super unleaded instead of finding out in the tank. “Everyone else uses 95” is not an approval for this engine. A brand statement about a different brand, including Honda’s, does not transfer.
What is E5 and where is it labelled?
E5 is super unleaded with no more than 5 per cent ethanol, sold at 97 octane or higher. The pump is labelled. GOV.UK points you to that grade when you are unsure about a lawnmower. It costs more per litre than E10, and it still goes stale in about a month, so buying E5 does not excuse a can left in the shed from October to March.
Does Draper 08671 allow E10?
Draper’s product page for 08671 says that model is E10 compatible. The amazon.co.uk file for B0957QTT1N does not mention E10. The same two sources already disagree about electric start, cutting width, and weight, so you should not treat the brand page as a full description of the Amazon title. Read the manual that arrives in the box. An E10 yes on the brand site does not confirm the electric-start bullet.
Do the Hyundai listings say?
No. None of B0CYP9QYYT, B0B6SVW14M, or B0D73R86LK states E10 or E5 in the files we kept. You cannot claim they are fine on pump 95, and you cannot claim they are banned from it. Until you have the manual, the GOV.UK fallback is E5 super unleaded (97+). A model code such as HYM510SP on the two-mower listing does not import another site’s fuel advice, and it is not the HYM510SPE a review site described.
How long can petrol sit in the tank?
About 30 days is the interval BALI and Stiga both point at, after which water and hard starting become the likely result. That applies to E10 and still matters for E5. For a winter lay-up, Stiga tells Stiga owners to run the tank dry. Your manual may say stabiliser instead. If the mower will not start in March, change the fuel before you decide the button has failed.
