How to start an electric start petrol mower

Updated: October 2026

You have the mower on the lawn, and the button is the part you bought so you would not have to yank a cord. A flat starter battery or a month-old can of fuel feels exactly like a dead machine. This page, from Peter F. on 22 October 2026, is the order of jobs before that button. It does not rank the listings in the [petrol lawn mower electric start comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/petrol-lawn-mower-electric-start). The steps come from a Hyundai HYM430SPE manual used as an example. Your carton manual still overrides this page. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you press anything

Take the mower outside, onto level grass, with the blade clear of feet, hoses, and stones. Do not start a new four-stroke that was shipped without oil. Use fresh petrol of the grade your manual allows. If you are unsure about E10, that choice is on the E10 petrol lawn mower page, not a guess with the cap already off. Set the cutting height high for the first pass. None of the kept amazon.co.uk files say a charger is in the box. The HYM430SPE manual says charge the starter battery for about six hours before first use and after every ten uses. Hayter’s UK FAQ says charge an electric-start battery at both ends of the season. Follow the manual that arrived with your mower. The operator presence control is the lever you hold against the handle. Do not tie it down.

The example button sequence

This sequence is the HYM430SPE manual, for a 420 mm, 139 cc, push-button mower. It is not the procedure printed on B0CYP9QYYT, B0B6SVW14M, or B0D73R86LK, and it is not a claim about the Draper 08671 bullet. If your manual differs, follow the manual. On that example you prime from cold, about five presses, and you do not keep priming a warm engine. You hold the operator presence lever, then press the start button for about three seconds. Release the button once the engine is running. If nothing happens, pressing for half a minute will not invent a charge. The buying guide is where you check whether a listing even mentions a cord.

When the button is dead

A dead button is often a flat starter battery or old fuel, not a ruined engine. The Hyundai bullets claim electric start with a recoil backup. The Draper 08671 bullet claims a button and does not mention a cord, so you cannot assume the cord is there from the Amazon text. If the cord is present and the engine still will not fire, look at the fuel before you buy another mower. Petrol left for about 30 days is a known starting fault. Do not keep cranking. Flooding a warm engine with extra primer turns a slow start into a longer one.

Stopping, and the faults that are not yours to fix

On the Hyundai example you stop by releasing the operator presence lever. The engine and the blade should die. Test that on the first start, in the open. Stop and get help if petrol is leaking, if the presence control does not stop the engine, or if the blade or the deck is damaged. The same applies if you need a declaration of conformity and a noise figure for paid work. A mower that starts on the cord and never on the button, after a proper charge, has a starter fault.

Common questions

Do I charge the battery before the first mow?
On the HYM430SPE example, yes. That manual says about six hours before first use, and again after every ten uses. Hayter’s FAQ says charge an electric-start battery at both ends of the season. Those are two published habits, not one rule for every brand. Use the manual in your carton. The amazon.co.uk files kept here do not say a charger is in the box.
What do I hold while I press the button?
You hold the operator presence control, the safety lever at the handle, and then you press the button. The HYM430SPE manual pairs those actions and says to press for about three seconds. The Amazon listings in this set do not name that lever. Do not tie it down. Releasing it is how that example mower stops.
What if the button does nothing?
Treat a flat starter battery first, then the cord if the machine has one and the listing calls it the backup. The Hyundai bullets here claim a recoil backup. The Draper bullet does not mention a cord. After that, fresh fuel, the plug, and the air filter are the usual checks. Petrol older than about a month can imitate a failed button.
Do I prime every time?
Not on the example manual. The HYM430SPE booklet uses about five primer presses from cold. A warm engine the same day is a different line, and extra primer can flood it. Your carton may not have a primer bulb. The Draper file does not mention one. Press the bulb only as your own manual describes.
Is this the procedure for the Amazon bundle?
No. The steps are the HYM430SPE manual, a 139 cc push-button example. The bundle ASINs claim a button and, on the Hyundai rows, a recoil backup. They do not print primer counts, charge hours, or a three-second press. If you buy one of those listings, the booklet in the carton is the procedure. Match the model name before you follow a PDF.
