Corten steel lawn edging

Updated: October 2026

You want the orange-brown line along a UK bed, and the coil in the search results already says corten. That word is not a certificate that the metal will stay straight or leave the patio clean. Corten steel lawn edging in this saved amazon.co.uk set means two retail coils, one of them 0.6 mm thick, not the thick weathering-steel edging trade yards describe. Galvanised steel is a different metal, on the [plastic vs metal lawn edging](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-edging/sub/lawn-edging-plastic-vs-metal) page. The whole table stays on the [lawn edging comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-edging). Peter F. used the saved listings and public UK seller notes on 22 October 2026. Corten is a look, not a certificate

COR-TEN is a trademark. Weathering steel is the wider name for steels that form a rusted surface and are sold for that colour. Straightcurve’s UK notes add that runoff can still stain light paving, and that a pre-rusted delivery is not a finished surface. You cannot see the standard from the colour. Neither listing in this set prints EN 10025-5, a grade such as S355, or a mill certificate. The Metal Hut describes its own edging as S355, with trade faces of 100 to 200 mm. The grade on these two coils is unproven. Unproven is not the same as fake.

Why a fraction of a millimetre will not hold a line

Garden UK’s design article suggests about 2 to 3 mm for most edging. That figure is their guide, not a British Standard and not a measurement of these coils. The only gauge printed in this set is 0.6 mm. United Kingdom reviews of that coil say it will not lie straight, that it bends if you step on it, and that it needs a trench. No stake is named on the 10 m listing. If you wanted a line you can mow against, 0.6 mm is the reason to stop, unless a soft ribbon is all you want.

Rust-coloured water and pale paving

Early runoff is the point the UK sellers agree on, even when they are selling the thick material. Straightcurve says weathering-steel runoff can stain light paving. The Metal Hut names pale paving, concrete and sandstone as surfaces that mark while the rust is still washing off. Garden UK’s advice is to leave gravel or planting between the steel and pale stone, and to avoid a spot that never dries, because the patina wants a wet-and-dry cycle. None of that is a lab result for the 0.6 mm coil. If the patio is pale and the edging must touch it, do not buy this look.

The two coils in this set

UNIGARDIA’s corten listing is 10 m long, 14 cm high and 0.6 mm thick, at about £37.99. Gloves are included. Stakes are not named. amazon.co.uk shows 3.8 from 696 reviews, the lowest star line in this comparison. Buy it only if a thin rust-coloured ribbon is enough and pale paving is not against it. Laitejituan is a 5 m corten-style border at about £28.99. Thickness, stake count and a steel grade are not in the file, and there is no star line. Do not treat the missing stars as zero. Walk away if the patio is pale and close, or if the listing will not state a thickness.

Common questions

What is corten steel?
Corten is the familiar name, from the COR-TEN trademark, for a kind of weathering steel that is meant to form a stable-looking rust colour. Weathering steel is the broader description. A product title that says corten has not, by itself, shown you a grade. EN 10025-5 appears on some UK sellers’ own material notes, including Furns, and it does not appear on the two coils in this set. You are buying the printed thickness, length and fixings, plus a colour, not a certificate.
Will it stain my patio?
It can. Straightcurve, The Metal Hut and Garden UK all describe early rust-coloured water marking pale paving, concrete or sandstone. A pre-rusted finish does not switch that off. Leave gravel or planting between the metal and light stone, and do not sit the face on a slab you cannot rinse. If the edging must touch pale sandstone, choose another material. Soil and mulch are a safer neighbour than a new patio.
Is 0.6 mm thick enough?
It is thick enough to show the colour, and it is thin beside the 2 to 3 mm guide in Garden UK’s article and beside trade faces sold at several millimetres. The only printed gauge in this set is the UNIGARDIA coil at 0.6 mm. United Kingdom reviewers say that coil waves, bends under a foot, and needs a trench. If you need a line you can step on or mow against, this gauge is the reason to look at thicker weathering steel, or at galvanised sections, instead.
Does a rusty delivery mean it is faulty?
Not according to the UNIGARDIA bullet, which says a patchy patina on arrival is not a defect. Weathering steel is supposed to look rusted, and the colour will keep changing. A patchy face is not the same fault as a coil that will not lie straight or a face that folds when you step on it. Those are the review complaints to separate from the colour. If thickness or length is not what the title said, that is a description problem, not a patina problem.
Are stakes included?
Not on the evidence in these two files. The 10 m UNIGARDIA listing names gloves and does not name stakes. Laitejituan also includes gloves and does not print a stake count. Reviewers of the thinner coil describe digging a trench. Budget for pins or a trench rather than assuming a no-dig kit. Gloves stop rust dust on your hands. They do not anchor the strip.
Is it the same as galvanised steel?
No. Galvanised steel in this comparison is the black Harbour Housewares edging, with a zinc-style coating and integral spikes, not an orange rust surface. Corten-style edging is bought for the rust colour and it continues to weather. The two should not be compared on colour alone. Compare gauge, whether fixings are in the box, and whether pale paving sits against the metal. Galvanised sections do not bring this staining note.
