Lawn edging buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are standing in a UK garden with a hose on the grass, trying to decide whether a coil, a rubber section or a steel strip belongs along the bed. The prices on amazon.co.uk do not compare until you know the job. This lawn edging buying guide puts the decisions in order: the job, the pegs in the box, the face height, and a stated length you can defend. The [lawn edging comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-edging) ranks the twelve saved listings. Peter F. assembled this from those listings on 22 October 2026. It is not a laboratory trial and not a garden test. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the star rating

A flexible plastic strip with pegs is the usual first buy when the bed curves and you want a long run without spending steel money. In this saved set, complete plastic kits with pegs sit at about £19 to £36 for 10 to 20 m. Rubber is about £47 to £64 for 4.8 m of heavy scalloped sections. Galvanised steel is the straight-line option, at about £30 for 5 m. Weathering steel sold as corten is a colour choice, and it is not the default metal. Stars come after the job. If you only need a cut line in the turf, the Royal Horticultural Society still describes a half-moon iron and tells you to stay off frozen or waterlogged ground. A product is for when that cut will not hold.

Height, thickness and what is in the box

Five centimetres is the common plastic face in this set. The VOUNOT 20 m brown strip is 5 cm high and 4 mm thick, with 60 pegs of 20 cm, at about £19.49. United Kingdom reviews on that listing say grass can still creep under a face that short. A 5 cm strip is a marker between lawn and mulch, not a root barrier. If bark or gravel needs a taller wall, the UNIGARDIA 20 m brown strip is 13 cm high and 3 mm thick, at about £24.99, and the bullet says the anchors are not in the box. The headline price is not a finished edge. Velway’s 20 m black coil at about £35.41 does not state a thickness. A listing sentence that claims more than 25 years is not a measured life.

Measure the curve and ignore a contradictory metre

A curved bed is longer than the straight line you pace across the lawn. Lay a hose or a string on the line you actually want, then measure that, and add overlap for joins and a mis-cut. Ten metres is a short front border, not a whole garden. Do not turn a conflicting length into a bargain. Kasky’s hammer-in recycled plastic is about £12.99. The title says 2.14 m and a bullet says 26.7 m and 175 pieces. That conflict is why this comparison does not print a price per metre for it. Use the title length as the working figure and check the parcel.

A checklist before you order

Name the job in one sentence before you pay: a curving bed, a straight mowing line, a short heavy rubber run, or a rust-coloured ribbon. Confirm the fixings. Sixty pegs in the VOUNOT box is a different product from a 13 cm strip whose anchors are sold separately. Measure the hose line and refuse any listing whose title and bullet disagree on length. Read the star line only after that, and do not add two colours together when the saved review text matches. The Nicoman earth and grey packs share one 4.6 from 507. Who leads the set is on the best lawn edging page.

Common questions

What should I buy first: plastic, rubber or steel?
Buy for the job, then check the pegs. Flexible plastic with pegs is the long, cheaper curve in this set, at about £19 to £36 for 10 to 20 m. Recycled rubber is a short, heavy run at about £47 to £64 for 4.8 m. Galvanised steel is the straight mowing line, at about £30 for 5 m here. A higher star rating does not override that split. If you only need a cut edge for one season, a half-moon may be enough and a product can wait.
Is 5 cm high enough to hold mulch?
A 5 cm face is what several plastic titles in this set print, including the 20 m VOUNOT strip. United Kingdom reviews on that listing say grass can still creep. Treat 5 cm as a light bed line, not a deep bark wall. The 13 cm UNIGARDIA strip is the taller plastic face in these files, at about £24.99, but the anchors are not included, so the finished cost is higher than the headline. Neither height was measured in a lab for this page.
How do I measure a curved bed?
Lay a hose or a string on the curve you want, including around a tree if the bed wraps one, and measure that line rather than the straight distance across the lawn. Add a little for joins and a cut that goes wrong. A 10 m kit is a short border. A 20 m kit disappears quickly on two curves. If the title and a bullet disagree on length, do not use either figure as a price per metre until the box settles it.
Are the pegs in the box?
Sometimes. The VOUNOT 20 m title includes 60 pegs of 20 cm. The UNIGARDIA 12 m set includes 50 anchors. The 13 cm UNIGARDIA strip says the anchors are not in the box. Photos that show pegs are not the same as a bullet that lists them. If the listing is silent, assume you may be buying stakes separately and price that before you compare it with a complete kit.
What if the title says about 2 m and a bullet says about 20 m?
Do not average them and do not call the lower price a 20 m bargain. Kasky is the clear case: the title says 2.14 m and a bullet says 26.7 m and 175 pieces. This comparison refuses a price per metre for that conflict. Check the parcel against the title you paid for. A right to reject goods that are not as described is not a reason to order a contradiction on purpose.
