Corten vs galvanised lawn edging: which finish fits?

Updated: October 2026

Choosing corten vs galvanised lawn edging is not just choosing brown or silver. Weathering steel develops a protective-looking patina through repeated wet and dry cycles, while galvanised steel relies on a zinc layer to protect the metal underneath. Powder-coated black or anthracite edging is a third finish and should not be quietly grouped with either. If the border meets pale paving, stays damp or sits close to the sea, those differences matter more than the product photograph. The [main lawn edging metal comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/lawn-edging-metal) records the claims on the saved amazon.co.uk rows. Two finishes, not one metal

Galvanising coats steel with zinc. It may start bright silver and dull with age, but it is meant to stay a coated surface rather than form an orange-brown patina. A cut or a wet pocket can still affect life. It is normally the clearer choice when you want a stable neutral colour. Powder coating adds a coloured layer. The black CORE EDGE listings claim a powder coat. The anthracite UNIGARDIA mentions powder coating and galvanised steel in different bullets, without explaining the build-up. Call that finish black or anthracite, not corten. COR-TEN began as a trademark. Weathering steel is the broader category, and the word corten on a marketplace title does not verify a grade such as S355J0WP. A 0.6 mm weathering claim is still a thin roll. Gauge sits in the metal lawn edging buying guide.

What the patina does, and what it stains

Weathering steel needs wet and dry cycles. EverEdge says its corten arrives blue-grey and colours over roughly three to six months, towards 12 months. The UNIGARDIA rolls say they arrive already rusty. Both can be true for different products. Brown runoff can mark pale slabs, render and gravel. Buy Metal Online warns about the early months. Straightcurve does not promise the risk ends on a fixed date. A gravel or planted strip gives runoff somewhere less visible. A permanently wet pocket may not form the same surface as steel that dries between showers. If a cream patio must stay clean, choose galvanised or a coated edge, or redesign the junction first. Hammer blows and cuts damage zinc and powder coat. The fitting order is in how to install metal lawn edging.

Coast, salt and a title that says both

EverEdge warns that salt and chlorine can damage the patina on its weathering steel. Straightcurve uses roughly 2 km from the coast as a point to consider galvanised edging instead. That distance is one supplier’s note, not a universal boundary. On a coastal site, galvanised or a suitable coated system is usually the more defensible start. Protect cuts as instructed. Do not assume a thin zinc-coated roll lasts indefinitely beside the sea. The Nicoman title says both pre-rusted galvanised and corten, while the bullet only states 1.5 mm flexible steel. A rust-coloured treatment is not confirmed weathering steel. If the seller cannot say what protects the steel, decide on the documented finish.

Which saved listings have which finish?

The UNIGARDIA corten rolls, 5 m and 10 m, claim a corten alloy and arrive rusty. Both state 0.6 mm, with gloves and no spikes. The 10 m reviews mention patchy colour, and one owner thought the finish looked sprayed. That does not prove paint. It does mean the title is not enough. Jordbrux claims corten at a stated 0.5 mm and 10 m. Treat it as a thin coil, not 2 to 3 mm trade weathering steel. VOUNOT and Focefec claim galvanised steel. VOUNOT states 0.7 mm and 10 m of panels. Focefec states no thickness. CORE EDGE is black powder-coated alloy steel. DLYYPLUS is black metal without a clear corrosion system. The anthracite UNIGARDIA says powder-coated in one bullet and galvanised in another, and the length cells also conflict. Finish is only one criterion.

Common questions

What is the difference between corten and galvanised edging?
Weathering steel is intended to form a brown patina through exposure, while galvanised steel uses a zinc coating to protect the substrate. Corten changes colour and can create rusty runoff. Galvanised normally keeps a grey metallic appearance. The word corten on a title is not, by itself, a named steel grade.
Will corten stain a pale patio?
It can. Rust-coloured runoff during weathering may mark light slabs, render or gravel, and the risk should not be assumed to end on a fixed date. Leave a gravel or planted buffer, or choose a stable coated finish where the steel meets a pale surface you want to keep clean.
Does corten arrive rusty or blue-grey?
Either is possible, depending on the product. EverEdge says its product arrives blue-grey and weathers over months. The saved UNIGARDIA listings say their rolls arrive rusty. Check the specific listing rather than treating one arrival condition as universal for every brown strip.
Is every corten listing weathering steel?
No. Marketplace sellers may use corten as a colour or style word. Look for an identifiable material specification, maker guidance and clear ageing behaviour. A rusty photograph alone does not verify a weathering-steel grade, and a pre-rusted galvanised phrase is a different claim.
Which finish is more practical near the sea?
Galvanised or a suitable coated system is generally the safer starting point, because salt can disrupt a weathering-steel patina. Straightcurve suggests considering galvanised within about 2 km of the coast. That is one supplier’s note. Local exposure still needs product-specific advice, and cuts still need protection.
Which saved rows are actually brown rolls?
The 5 m and 10 m UNIGARDIA corten listings and the 10 m Jordbrux listing are the clear brown-roll claims. Nicoman mixes corten and pre-rusted galvanised wording, so its exact finish remains unresolved. The black CORE EDGE rows are powder-coated alloy steel, not a patina product.
