How to use electric metal shears on flat sheet

Updated: October 2026

You have marked a line on flat mild steel, the electric metal shears are in your hand, and the first squeeze is where most torn edges start. This is how to use electric metal shears for a straight cut in sheet you can support, not a ranking of the six rows on the [electric metal shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/electric-metal-shears). The Products Compared editorial team drew the sequence from UK review themes on the Merry Tools corded shear and from HSE guidance on sharp edges, on 22 October 2026. We have not measured a gap on these tools. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Set the gap before the marked line

Unplug the corded shear, or take the battery off a cordless body, before you touch the cutters. UK reviews of Merry Tools B008CNF278 treat the gap as the difference between a cut and a ruined sheet. Too small a gap risks the cutters. Too wide a gap tears the metal. Reviewers describe an Allen key. Makita’s JS1601 gauge table is for that model only, not a setting for Merry Tools, Roadtime or Bostar. Cut about 100 mm of scrap before the marked line. If it tears or stalls, reset with the tool dead.

Feed the sheet, do not wrestle it

Support the panel so the shear is cutting, not holding the weight. Reviewers who cut van windows found the housing fouls a pillar. When the nose hits the return, stop and finish that corner with snips. Feed in a straight line at a pace the cutters accept. If you have to push, the gap is wrong, the sheet is over what you proved on scrap, or the blade is blunt. A stall on about 1 mm steel, or brushes that arc, is a stop. The Merry Tools switch is hard to hold on and easy to knock off. A gentle curve after practice is what some reviewers managed. Corrugated ridge sheet failed for one UK reviewer of this corded shear. That job is on the electric shears vs nibbler page. Whether the bullet names your metal is the buying guide.

Edges, noise and the lead

The offcut is sharp as soon as it exists. HSE’s EIS16 treats gloves as residual protection, and as a snag risk near moving parts. Wear eye protection. Keep gloves out of the cutters while the blades move, and use them once the tool has stopped. None of the six listings prints decibels or m/s². Do not borrow Makita JS1602 figures for it. Reviewers call the corded shear noisy. Keep the lead behind the cut. Merry Tools states 220–240 V and does not name a BS 1363 plug, so check the plug before the job. Do not run a mains shear in the wet. Who a cordless body suits is on the best electric metal shears page.

When to put the shear down

Stop when the blade binds, the smell changes, or the brushes spark beyond a brief start. Stop when you cannot name the metal. Stainless that was never on the bullet is not slightly harder mild steel. Stop when the cut meets structure: a chassis rail, a roll cage, a stressed roof bow. A window in thin van skin is a panel. A cut that changes how the vehicle carries load is a fabricator’s job. Stop when the sheet is thicker than the scrap you already cut, even if a bullet says 2.5 mm or 2 mm. Stop if the plug, the lead or the battery foot is damaged. The sequence is: dead tool, gap for this sheet, scrap cut, light feed, stop when it binds.

Common questions

How do I set the blade gap?
Unplug or remove the battery, then adjust with the key the tool actually has. On the Merry Tools reviews that key is an Allen key, and some units included feeler gauges. Set it, cut scrap of the same sheet, and reset if the scrap tears or the cutters chip. Makita’s JS1601 gauge table is for that Makita model only. A tenth of the thickness is one fabricator’s experience, not a setting for every shear here.
Why does the sheet tear or the cutters chip?
A gap that is too wide tears the sheet. A gap that is too tight, or blades that touch, risks chipping the cutters. UK reviews of the corded shear describe both. Forcing the feed when the tool slows makes the same mess. Oil and a fresh cutter face help only after the tool is dead and the gap has been reset. If a new face still stalls on thin steel, stop using it.
Why is the panel bent after a cut that went through?
Because going through is not the same as staying flat. A single-cut shear can bend one edge, and one Merry Tools review describes a bent result on 2 mm aluminium. Cladding Mate makes the same point for single-cut shears in general. If both pieces must stay flat, or the edge has to sit in a joint, a shear may be the wrong cutter. Support the panel so its weight is not bending the sheet while you cut.
Can I cut a curve or a corrugated roof?
A gentle curve, after practice on scrap, is what some Merry Tools reviewers managed. A tight corner inside a van is where the body fouls the pillar, so finish that with snips. Corrugated ridge sheet failed for one UK reviewer of that corded shear. Profiled and corrugated sheet is a nibbler job, and none of these listings is a nibbler.
When do I stop and get a fabricator?
When the cut meets structure, when you cannot name the metal or the thickness, when the tool stalls or the brushes arc and a gap reset does not fix it, or when the sheet is corrugated and you only own a shear. Also stop if people at work will use the tool and you have no noise or vibration figure to assess.
