How to use an Einhell lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

The first dry Saturday is when a new Einhell usually leaves the shed, and the usual mistakes are a deck set too low, grass still wet, a stiff height adjuster forced down, or a lead left in the blade's path. This is how to use an Einhell lawn mower from the set on our [Einhell lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/einhell-lawn-mower): a push rotary, cordless or corded, with a lowest cut of 20 mm or higher. Products Compared used RHS mowing guidance, Electrical Safety First's outdoor-lead advice, and the review themes on the amazon.co.uk files from 19 October 2026. We did not run a mowing trial. Choosing 18 V or mains still sits on the [buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/einhell-lawn-mower/sub/einhell-lawn-mower-buying-guide).

Before the blade turns

Walk the lawn first. The RHS advice is dry grass, not frost and not waterlogged ground, and a clear-up of stones and toys. If you cannot hold the mower on the slope, stop. None of these listings states driven wheels. On a mains mower, set the lead's path first. The 1,600 W GC-EM states a 10 m cord. Lay it on grass you have already cut, fully unwound. Electrical Safety First wants a 30 mA RCD outdoors and wants you to stop if the cord is damaged. Cordless decks have no mower lead. Their chargers still want a UK plug, used dry. Take the safety key out, or unplug the mower, before you clear the chute or fit a box.

How short these Einhell decks will go

Start on the highest setting and take about one third of the leaf. The RHS puts an ordinary lawn around 4 cm in spring and autumn and around 2.5 cm in summer, and says to raise the cut in drought. A fine lawn at 6–13 mm is below every minimum here. The lowest stated cut is 20 mm, on the two corded models. On the about £83.94 kit the height change is an axial spring from 30 mm to 70 mm, and reviewers call it stiff. If it will not travel, work the spring with the key out. The 1,600 W mower uses five single-wheel steps from 20 mm to 60 mm, so a wheel left high on one side will scalp the other.

Box, side discharge and the mulch wedge

Empty the box before it packs solid. A 25 litre box on the small kit fills long before a 63 litre box on the 43 cm kit. On the 1,800 W model, one of three UK texts says the box will not stay in position. Reseat it with the machine stopped. If it still falls off, that is a warranty job, not a cue to mow with the chute open. Fit a mulch wedge only when your carton includes one. In this set the wedge is named on the 43 cm kit, model 3413130, and on the 36/36, model 3413230. Gardeners' World's notes on the RASARRO 36/34 say there is no mulch plug. Use the arrangement that is physically in your hands, with the key out or the plug pulled.

When the battery or the cord is the limit

A small pack dies in long grass. Reviewers of the 30 cm kit describe the supplied 3.0 Ah battery fading on the first overgrown cut and lasting longer once the lawn is maintained. If the mower stops halfway, raise the deck if the grass is still long, fit the second pack on a twin-pack kit, or finish another day. Minutes and seller square metres are on the battery runtime page. A 10 m cord is the stated reach of the 1,600 W model unless you add an outdoor extension that stays fully unwound on the RCD. The 1,800 W file does not state a cord length, so measure the lead you were sent. Stop if the plug shows heat damage, if the RCD will not reset, or if the mower smells of burning after the blade has hit metal.

Common questions

What height should the first cut of the year be?
On an established lawn, use the highest setting and take about one third. The RHS figure of grass around 5 cm is the point where a first seasonal cut makes sense, with an ordinary spring target around 4 cm. New turf is the STIHL caution: leave it until about 8–10 cm, then cut to about 5–6 cm. Do not start a soft lawn at 20 mm because the dial allows it.
Should you mow wet grass because one review did?
No. The RHS wants dry grass. One review of the 1,800 W mower describes long grass that was still damp. That single comment is not a technique. Wet growth is where boxes clog and cordless packs fade. Frost and waterlogged ground are the same pause.
How do you fit a mulch wedge safely?
Only if your carton includes one, which in this capture means the 43 cm kit or the 36/36 unless you have found a wedge in another box. Remove the safety key or unplug the mower, fit the wedge, and clear old clippings before you start. If the listing never named a wedge, do not block the chute with a homemade plug.
What do you do when the battery dies halfway?
Stop, raise the height if the remaining grass is long, and either fit the second pack or leave the rest. The 3.0 Ah pack with the 30 cm kit is the one reviewers say fades on an overgrown first cut. A seller's square-metre line is not that moment on the clock.
Does ordinary Saturday mowing break a UK law?
There is no national Sunday ban, and daytime mowing is not automatically exempt either. Councils deal with neighbour noise as statutory nuisance when it is unreasonable. The sound-power rules cap a mower up to 50 cm wide at 96 dB. These listings do not print a measured figure.
