How to use an Einhell strimmer

Updated: October 2026

The strimmer is out of the shed, the lawn edge is shaggy, and the head, the guard, and the battery or the plug are the three things that go wrong first. This is how to use an Einhell strimmer from the eight listings in our set: a level pass on open grass, a vertical edge only where that listing describes a head that turns, and a cutter change with the power removed. The [Einhell grass trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/einhell-grass-trimmer) is where the article numbers sit. Peter F. used the 19 October 2026 listings and public UK safety advice. Before you switch it on

Walk the edge first. Closed shoes, long trousers, and eye protection are the minimum once a blade or a line end can snap. Fit the guard even when the assembly field says No. Assembly is marked Yes on articles 3411172 and 3411197, and No on the other six. The 24 cm tools use plastic blades. Einhell prints 1.6 mm, 2 mm, or 1.4 mm for the line articles, and Amazon’s block for the 28 cm Solo does not print a diameter. On a cordless tool, fit one 18 V Power X-Change pack, or two if you own article 3411300. On the GC-ET 4530, Electrical Safety First’s advice is a 3-pin plug, a 30 mA RCD, dry ground, and the cable over your shoulder. The plug standard is not printed on the listing.

Edging and ordinary trimming

Start with a level pass. Hold the cutter roughly parallel to the lawn and take off a little, then a little more. Scalping is a tipped head cutting a brown arc into the turf. Turn the head for a vertical edge only where the listing describes that movement. Article 3411172 rotates plus or minus 90 degrees and tilts to five positions. Article 3411242 describes 180 degrees and three tilts. Article 3402026 adds an edge roller. Article 3411197 says the head rotates and does not print the angle. Article 3411104 does not describe a rotating head. Do not twist that shaft and call it edging. If the boundary is paving or a wall, use line. Which you bought is on the line or blades page.

Blades, spools, and a feed that sticks

Take the battery off, or unplug, before your fingers go near the head, including a jam or a spool that will not advance. On a cordless tool the pack is the plug. On the 24 cm tools you swap a plastic knife, then refit the guard before the battery goes back on. Match a line refill to the article: 1.6 mm on 3411242, 2 mm bump feed on 3411300, and 1.4 mm twin line on 3402026. Do not put 2 mm line on the 1.6 mm or 1.4 mm head. Automatic feed on the 28 cm Solo and the GC-ET 4530 should advance line as it shortens. Bump feed on the 36 V tool advances when you tap the head on grass, not on a slab. If nothing comes, remove the pack or the plug and open the spool.

When you stop

Stop if the tool smells of burning, if the head keeps turning after you release the trigger and remove the pack, or if a mains lead is nicked. Einhell UK prints 0151 649 1500, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. A damaged lead is an electrician’s job. Woody growth is a contractor’s job. If this session showed you own the wrong cutter, the choice is on the buying guide. If you are replacing the tool, the best Einhell grass trimmer page names who each listing is for.

Common questions

What do I do before the first cut?
Clear stones, put on closed shoes and eye protection, and fit the guard. Confirm plastic blades on the 24 cm articles, or the printed line diameter on 3411242, 3411300, or 3402026. Fit the battery only when your hands are clear. On the GC-ET 4530, plug in on a dry day with a 30 mA RCD. Assembly marked No does not mean the guard is already on the shaft.
How do I edge without scalping the lawn?
Hold a level pass and take a shallow cut, overlapping as you go. Scalping is a tipped head in the turf. Use a vertical head only on 3411172, 3411242, 3402026, and, without a printed angle, 3411197. Article 3411104 does not describe a rotating head. A flower guard protects plants. It does not stop a scalped arc if you lean on the shaft.
When do I take the battery off or unplug?
Before any jam, blade swap, or spool job, and before you turn the tool over. Release the trigger, wait until the cutter stops, then remove the pack or pull the plug. On the GC-ET 4530 that is the unplug-before-a-jam rule. On the cordless tools the pack is the plug. A released trigger with the battery still fitted leaves the head live.
What line diameter is printed, and what must I not fit?
Einhell UK prints 1.6 mm and 5 m for article 3411242, 2 mm and 8 m for article 3411300, and 1.4 mm for article 3402026. Amazon’s captured specification for the 28 cm Solo does not print a diameter, so name the source. Do not fit 2 mm line to the 1.6 mm or 1.4 mm head, and do not treat a universal spool as a match. The 24 cm tools take blades, not line.
When is the job no longer a strimmer job?
When the growth is woody, when you need a metal blade, when the motor smokes, when the head will not stop, or when the lead or the outdoor socket is damaged or tripping. A contractor takes the woody work. An electrician takes the damaged lead. A fresh pack of plastic knives does not turn bramble into a lawn edge.
