Cordless shears vs hedge trimmer

Updated: October 2026

Cordless shears vs a hedge trimmer is a blade-length mix-up. The shear in this amazon.co.uk file is a handheld 2-in-1 with a shrub blade of about 12–20 cm. A hedge trimmer, in the sense the Royal Horticultural Society uses for a large face, is a much longer bar. Length of face and thickness of wood decide. Voltage does not. The [cordless shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-shears) prices the shears only and does not rank full-size trimmers. Peter F. used those listings and RHS guidance. Same name, different blade

Amazon files several of these shears under Hedge Trimmers, and the titles say both hedge trimmer and grass shear. The blade tells you which phrase is marketing. Shrub blades here run from about 118 mm on the WORKPRO 3.6 V to 200 mm on the Ryobi and the DCA. Grass blades are shorter, about 75 mm to 12.5 cm. A 200 mm bar is the length of a small bread knife. It will shape a box ball. It will not walk a boundary hedge the way a 45–60 cm trimmer does. The RHS puts hand shears on smaller hedges and soft growth, and a powered trimmer on large hedges. Bosch's EasyShear page limits that tool to young shrubs and light trimming. One saved listing was removed from this comparison because it was a 55 cm dual-action trimmer, not a handheld shear.

Thickness, not voltage

Printed ceilings are about 7.7–10 mm. The WORKPRO 12 V states 7.7 mm, the WORKPRO 3.6 V and the EZUVITA state 7.8 mm, the Enventor states 8 mm, and the Ryobi states up to 10 mm. The EasyShear, the Isio, the LIGO, the Yard Force and the DCA print no ceiling in the saved file. Reviews fill the gap with jams on anything like a pencil. An 18 V or 20 V label on a 20 cm blade does not turn 10 mm into 25 mm. The Ryobi claims the highest printed cut in this file, and reviewers still say it is not for a thick hedge. Dry wood is a third tool. Secateurs take a brown stem. If the leaf tears, stop.

Which job gets which tool

Use a cordless shear when the growth is this year's soft wood on a small shrub, a piece of topiary, or a short edge. The EasyShear's 12 cm blade and the 200 mm blades on the DCA and the Ryobi are all in that band if the wood is soft. One named shear, after that decision, is on the best cordless grass shears page, still only for the soft job. Use a hedge trimmer when the face is long or the wood is thicker than those ceilings. A privet run you walk along, or stems that already stalled a shear, are trimmer work. If you can pinch the stem and it is still green and under about 8–10 mm, and the shrub fits a blade no longer than 20 cm, buy a shear and follow how to use cordless grass shears for the nest check. Stepping from a shear around £26 to the Ryobi body at about £71.39 does not change the category.

What not to infer from the browse node

A rank inside Hedge Trimmers does not make a shear a hedge trimmer. The EasyShear ranks highly in that node because shoppers search there. Browse rank is popularity, not a specification. 2-in-1 on these titles means a short grass head and a short shrub head. It does not mean shear versus a 55 cm bar. We do not have a like-for-like noise test against a hedge trimmer, so one stated decibel figure is not a reason to call every shear quieter.

Common questions

Can this shear cut my privet hedge?
Only the soft tip of a small, young privet. Bosch's EasyShear page includes privet as light trimming. A woody run along a fence is beyond an 8–10 mm ceiling and beyond a 12–20 cm blade. Reviews in this file say these tools will not cut a real hedge. Brown stems and a long face need a hedge trimmer, not a higher-voltage shear from the same table.
What thickness is the limit?
About 7.7–10 mm where a number is printed: 7.7 mm, 7.8 mm, 8 mm or up to 10 mm, depending on the row. Five of the ten listings print no ceiling. Reviews still describe a pencil-thick stem as the stall. Dry wood is for secateurs. The Ryobi's 10 mm claim is the top printed figure and it remains a fine-stem claim.
Why do Amazon listings call these hedge trimmers?
Because the browse node and the titles use that phrase for a 2-in-1 shear. The blade length is the correction: about 118–200 mm for the shrub head here, not a 45 cm bar. A high rank, including the EasyShear's, is popularity. It is not a change in what the blade can reach. Read the included blade, not the department name.
Is a 200 mm shrub blade a hedge trimmer?
It is the longest shrub blade in this file, on the Ryobi and the DCA, and it is still a detail tool. Reviewers say the DCA is not a substitute for a full hedge trimmer. Two hundred millimetres will shape topiary and a small shrub. It will not replace a bar several times that length. The extra volts on those rows do not change the length.
What should I buy if the shear stalls?
Stop using the shear on that stem. A few dry shoots need secateurs. A face that is too long or too thick needs a hedge trimmer with a bar that matches the hedge, from a range that sells those bars. Moving from the LIGO to the Ryobi bare tool will not remove the stall. You would still be under about 10 mm, and about £71.39 does not include a battery.
Are the shears quieter than a hedge trimmer?
We cannot say that from this file. There is no paired noise test. The only sourced figure here is Ryobi's stated 83.5 dB(A) sound power for the RY18GSA-0. One listing is not a class result, and it is not a win over a trimmer you have not measured. If noise decides the purchase, compare the figures on the two exact models you mean to buy.
