Cordless shears for lawn edges

Updated: October 2026

The mower has left a fringe against the path, a collar around the apple tree, and a tuft along the gravel board. Cordless shears for lawn edges are the short grass blade on a 2-in-1, not the shrub head and not a strimmer line. They trim overhang. They do not cut a new shape into the soil. The [cordless shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-shears) holds the ten amazon.co.uk prices last checked on 22 October 2026. The edge the mower leaves

A fringe is grass the mower deck cannot reach, against a slab, a trunk, a fence board or a bed. The RHS still expects you to redefine a lost edge with a half-moon, leaving about a 7.5 cm drop, then trim the overhang with edging shears after each mow. A powered grass blade of about 75–125 mm does not replace the half-moon. It replaces the weekly snip, on a much shorter head, if you keep the same habits. That matters when the edge has slumped into the border. A shear along a wavy soil line only trims a wavy fringe. Restore the line with the half-moon once, then use the shear. A tree, a board or a tight corner is where the shear does less harm than a strimmer line, if the growth is a fringe and not a wet mat.

What the grass blade can and cannot take

Dry, recently mown fringe is the job. Lush or wet grass is where the smaller heads stall. WORKPRO 3.6 V reviews find the grass head weaker on lush growth. Enventor reviews say not to start at the base of long grass, and the listing says the tool is not for waterlogged ground. Take the top of a long fringe first, on a drier day, then the next layer. Keep the shrub blade off this job. Here you need the grass head, a fringe, and a half-moon when the soil edge has gone.

Widths in this set

Every kept listing includes a grass blade, and a wider figure is not a faster lawn. The Ryobi file prints both 100 mm and 120 mm, so do not average them. The Isio's Amazon field of 8 mm does not match Bosch's 80 mm grass blade and should not be read as the width. A grass blade in the box is not a battery in the box. The buying guide sorts that, and one named pick for a small soft garden is on the best cordless grass shears page.

When a strimmer is still the other tool

Keep a strimmer when the edge is a long open run, the grass is coarse, and nothing fragile sits beside it. Reviews that left a strimmer were usually at a trunk or a messy corner, not a field margin. The shear's complaint on a long run is time. A 100 mm head along a whole frontage is a slow walk. Use the shear when the fringe is short and the surface beside it matters. If the grass is wet and long, wait or take the top only. If the blade stalls or falls off, stop.

Common questions

Are cordless shears better than a strimmer for edges?
They are better where a line would mark bark, scuff a gravel board or fling debris into a corner. Saved reviews name trunks, fountain bases and boards as the reason people put the strimmer down. They are worse when you want speed on a long straight edge with nothing fragile beside it. Better means less damage on a short awkward fringe, not a faster cut of the whole lawn. The grass still has to be a fringe, not a wet mat.
How wide is the grass blade?
It depends on the listing. This file includes 75 mm on the WORKPRO 3.6 V, about 80 mm on the Bosch pages for the EasyShear and the Isio, 93 mm on the Yard Force, about 100 mm on the Enventor, EZUVITA and DCA, and 12.5 cm on the WORKPRO 12 V. The Ryobi file prints both 100 mm and 120 mm. The Isio's Amazon field of 8 mm should not be used as the width. A wider blade is still an edge tool, not a mower.
Will it cut long wet grass?
Poorly. The Enventor listing says not to use it on waterlogged ground, and reviews say to take the top of long grass first. WORKPRO 3.6 V reviews find lush grass harder than a dry fringe. If the collar around a tree is wet and thick, wait or take thin passes from the top. Forcing a stalled head pulls grit into the blades. It does not finish the edge.
Can I edge around a tree without damaging the bark?
Yes, if the teeth stay in the grass and off the bark. That is the advantage reviewers wanted over a strimmer line that had already marked trunks. Keep the head in the fringe, not tipped into the root flare. A young tree with thin bark is less forgiving, so go slowly. The shear does not redefine the soil circle. A half-moon does that once. The shear only trims what the mower missed.
Do I still need a half-moon edger?
Yes, when the soil edge has slumped or was never cut. The RHS method is a half-moon, with about a 7.5 cm drop, then a trim of the overhang after mowing. A powered grass blade only does the second part. If the edge is already a clean step and you only have a fringe, you can skip the half-moon until the step breaks down. Most tired lawns need both tools across a year.
What if the grass blade stalls or falls off?
Stop, with the blade unable to start, and reseat the head until it is flush. Do not hold the trigger while you clear grass or stones. Ryobi reviews include blades that stop meeting and a blade that drops if you press it. A stall in wet grass means a thinner pass or a drier day, not more force. If the head will not stay on, the session is over.
