How to use cordless grass shears

Updated: October 2026

The shear is charged, the booklet is three vague pictures, and the box by the front door needs a tidy. How to use cordless grass shears is the order of that first session: seat the blade so it cannot run loose, look for a nest, then cut only growth soft enough that the motor does not stall. The [cordless shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-shears) holds the ten listings if you have not bought yet. This page does not rank them. Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk files, Royal Horticultural Society guidance and GOV.UK's wild-bird note, as they stood on 22 October 2026. We did not time a hedge. Before the blade is on

Charge the tool before you need it, and do not treat a no-load claim as the length of the cut. Bosch prints up to 40 minutes unloaded for the EasyShear and up to 50 for the Isio. If the carton has only a USB-C cable, as the WORKPRO 3.6 V states, you still need a mains brick. A Ryobi body with no ONE+ pack is not ready to charge. That packing difference is on the buying guide. Fit the head with the blade unable to start. Keep the covers on and do not squeeze the trigger while the plate is half home. A WORKPRO review describes the motor running with the blade unseated. Reseat the plate until it sits flush, and only then take the covers off.

Check the plant, then cut

A June tidy of a garden hedge is not automatically illegal, and it is not automatically safe. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects a nest in use or being built, including in a garden bush. GOV.UK lists trimming bushes among activities that can harm wild birds when a nest is there. Look before you start. Eggs, chicks, or adults repeatedly entering the same spot mean you stop. The RHS gives the same stop. In England, 1 March to 31 August restricts qualifying agricultural hedgerows, not every garden box ball. When the plant is clear, wear goggles and thick gloves, as the RHS recommends. On a small box ball, take a little and step back. These shears are for this year's soft growth. If the motor loads up, you are already too deep.

Grass blade and shrub blade

The two heads are not the same job. The shrub blade, about 12–20 cm here, is for soft shoots. The grass blade, often about 75–125 mm wide, is for the fringe a mower leaves. A shrub blade on a lawn edge chews turf. A grass blade in a woody stem stalls and, in some reviews, walks the head off the body. Match the head before you hold the switch. For a shrub, keep the teeth in soft green wood. A pencil-thick brown stem is where several brands jam. The fringe is on cordless shears for lawn edges.

When it clicks or stalls

A click with no cut ends the session. Saved reviews describe a motor that runs, or clicks, while the blades stay still. Release the switch, fit the covers, and remove the pack if it comes out. Clear debris only when the blade cannot start. Do not poke the teeth because the safety usually needs two buttons. The LIGO file shows that assumption failing. If the tool stalls in thick growth, back it out. Stop for a powered blade above shoulder height, a nest you cannot see, a swollen pack, or a farm hedgerow in the English closed season.

Common questions

How do I change the blade without cutting myself?
Take a removable battery out first, and leave the covers on until the new head sits flush. The EZUVITA, the WORKPRO 12 V and the Yard Force can shed a pack. The EasyShear, the Isio and the LIGO cannot, so you never trial the trigger with the plate half fitted. A WORKPRO review records the motor running with the blade unseated. If the catch needs a pry against the teeth, stop.
Should I charge it before first use?
Yes, once a battery is in the box or built in. Use the lead supplied, and add your own USB brick when the carton only has a cable. Do not expect 40, 50 or 80 no-load minutes to be the length of the hedge. A Ryobi bare body cannot charge until a ONE+ pack and charger exist. The first cut starts when the tool shows a charge, not when the title says cordless.
Can I trim my garden hedge in June?
You can trim an ordinary garden shrub in June if there is no nest in use or being built. The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 still applies in a garden. The 1 March to 31 August restriction in England is for qualifying agricultural hedgerows, not every box ball. If the hedge might be a farm hedgerow, do not guess. The date does not replace a look inside the plant.
What if I find a nest?
Stop. Do not cut around it and do not move it. GOV.UK and the RHS both treat an active nest as the point where trimming becomes harm. Wait until the young have gone, then look again. A quick tidy of the same bush is the same problem if the nest is still in use. The farm closed season is a separate rule and does not weaken this one.
The motor runs but the blades only click. What now?
Stop and make the blade safe. Covers on, pack out if it is removable, and do not hold the trigger while you inspect the teeth. A spinning motor with still blades is a pattern in these review files, including heads that were never seated. Reseat the plate once. If it still will not drive, the session is over. Forcing the blades with the motor running damages fingers and small gears.
When should I put the tool down and call someone?
Put it down for a cut above shoulder height, a nest you cannot see, a farm hedgerow that may fall under the English closed season, a swollen battery, or a head that runs when it is not seated. Also stop when brown wood keeps stalling the blade. A professional cutter, or secateurs for a few dry stems, is the honest next step. These shears are a waist-height tidy on soft growth.
