Cordless vs corded lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

The socket is on the back wall, the lawn is a rectangle you can see from the kitchen, and you are still not sure the lead is the problem. A cordless vs corded lawn mower decision is about that lead. Corded keeps cutting for as long as the RCD stays in and the cable reaches. Cordless takes the cable off the grass and puts the limit in the pack. Peter F. compared the two formats using Electrical Safety First and amazon.co.uk listings captured on 22 October 2026. The ten cordless rows are on the [cordless lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-lawn-mower).

What changes when you drop the lead

A corded mower is a mains rotary with a flex you have to keep behind the deck. Cable reach is the corded limit, and the missing lead is the cordless gain. You stop tripping on the cable, and you stop mowing across it. The new limit is the pack. Printed runtimes in this capture are seller sentences: 30 minutes on one Litheli attribute, 45 minutes on a Ryobi attribute that assumes a 5.0Ah battery the body does not include, and “up to 30 minutes” or “up to 45 minutes” on DEKO and SEYVUM bullets. Which?’s average of about 22 minutes is from other mowers, not these ASINs. None of these bullets claim self-propel. Entry kit prices start at about £81.19 and about £83.94. Compare a corded mower with a kit that includes a pack, not with a bare tool.

Runtime versus a socket

A corded mower does not stop for a recharge. If the cable reaches the far edge and you keep it out of the blade, the lawn finishes in one session. That is the advantage on a small plot beside the back door. A cordless mower stops when the pack does. UK reviews on the Einhell 30 cm call the battery the weak part beyond a small patch. The Einhell 33 cm file includes a report of about 15 minutes. A Bosch review describes charging every 10–15 minutes. Litheli 20V comments often land near 25–30 minutes. A second pack lets you swap rather than wait. LIGO, DEKO, SEYVUM and the Litheli 40V row name two batteries. The Ryobi OLM1833B names none. How to treat those minutes is cordless lawn mower battery life. The charger is still mains. A flat pack at 4pm means the rest of the lawn waits.

Cable, RCD, and wet grass

Electrical Safety First tells you to use an RCD on outdoor equipment, to know where the cable is, and to uncoil an outdoor-rated extension fully so it does not overheat on the reel. A cut flex is a real corded failure. Keep the cable on the side you have already mown, and stop if you lose sight of it. A damaged lead is replaced, not taped. Cordless does not make rain safe. The RHS says you should not mow wet grass, and reviews in this set describe stalls on damp grass with no mains lead in sight. Outdoor equipment regulations set a Stage II sound-power limit of 96 dB for mowers with a cutting width of 50 cm or less. Every deck here sits in that band, and none of the ten pages print an LWA figure. The format is not a free pass at 11pm. The start bar and the one-third rule are in how to use a cordless lawn mower.

Which format, with one condition

Choose corded when an outdoor socket, on an RCD, reaches the far edge with a lead you will keep behind the deck, and you would rather not stop to charge. A small rectangle by the back door is the usual case. You gain unlimited runtime for that patch and you accept the trip hazard. Choose cordless when the lead is the risk you are trying to remove: a path across the middle, a gate, or trees. Buy a kit with a battery named in the box, unless you already own the platform. In this capture that points you at a kit, not at the Ryobi body. Petrol is the exit when one charge will not finish the grass and you do not want a lead either. It is not a third column on this page.

Common questions

Is corded always cheaper?
No. Mains mowers are often the lower shelf price in UK guides, and this cordless capture still starts at about £81.19 for a kit with batteries named. A body-only cordless price is not a fair comparison, because you still have to buy a pack. Price the corded mower against a cordless kit, on the day, in GBP.
Can I cut the cable with a mains mower?
Yes. That is the failure corded buyers are trying to avoid, and it happens when the flex creeps in front of the deck. Keep the cable on the mown side, use an RCD, and stop if you cannot see the lead. A nicked flex is replaced, not taped.
Do I still need an RCD if I buy cordless?
You need an RCD on the socket that feeds the charger, and on any outdoor supply, following Electrical Safety First. The mower deck is battery while you push it. The charger is 230 V. Cordless removes the lead from the lawn. It does not remove mains from the house.
Can either type mow wet grass?
No. The RHS and Electrical Safety First both point you off wet ground. Corded machines add a mains-and-water risk. Cordless machines still clog, and reviewers in this set say so. Wait until the lawn is dry, even if the battery is full.
When is petrol the honest exit?
When the lawn is too much for one charge and you will not use a lead, or when the growth is long enough that a small electric deck stalls. UK guides still separate petrol for that job. It is a different machine, with fuel and more noise, not a badge on these battery listings.
