How to use a cordless lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

The first dry Saturday in April is when a new battery mower usually meets grass left since October. You need a height, a start sequence, and a rule for when to stop. This is how to use a cordless lawn mower once it is already in the shed: charge it, take less than a third off, and take the pack out before your hands go near the blade. Peter F. followed the Royal Horticultural Society and Electrical Safety First, plus amazon.co.uk reviews captured on 22 October 2026. Choosing the machine is the [buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-lawn-mower/sub/cordless-lawn-mower-buying-guide). Before you leave the shed

Charge the pack indoors, on the charger that came with the mower or with your platform, and check it for a BS 1363 plug. The deck is not a mains appliance while you push it. The charger is. Electrical Safety First wants an RCD on outdoor electrics and does not want garden equipment used in the wet. Walk the lawn before you fit the pack. Pick up stones, toys and twigs, and wait until the grass is dry. Damp clippings are what reviewers report as stalls, including on the Ryobi body and on long grass with the smaller Einhell. If the pack has spent winter in a freezing shed, let it reach room temperature before you charge it. That storage is cordless lawn mower battery life.

Set the height, including the first cut

The RHS asks you to remove at most one-third of the leaf in a single pass. A lawn left at about 60 mm should come down towards 40 mm, not straight to the bottom stop. A new lawn waits until it is about 5 cm. The Einhell 30 cm kit is 30–70 mm in three steps, so its lowest stop is already at the tall end of a short summer cut. DEKO and SEYVUM print 25–75 mm in six steps. If the lines disagree, the manual in the box wins. If the grass is still long, leave it a few days and take another third.

Start, mow, and empty

Many cordless mowers use a safety button, then a bail bar. The manual wins if the order differs. Fit the pack until it clicks, and keep your feet clear of the deck. Push at a walking pace. If the motor note drops, the grass is too long or the box is full. Release the bar and the blade should stop. Do not lift the deck while the blade is spinning. On a slope, mow across it. Overlap each pass by a few centimetres, and empty the box before it is packed solid. Mulch only on dry grass, little and often. Bosch, Ryobi and the Litheli 20V listing name a mulch plug or a 2-in-1 mode. Keep children and pets off the lawn until the pack is out.

When it stalls or smells hot

Stop, release the bar, and take the battery out before you tip the mower or put a hand under the deck. Clear a clog with a stick, with the pack on the path. Do not hose the electrics. If the mower smokes, or the pack is too hot to hold, do not fit it again. A LIGO review described smoke in the first minutes, and a Forte review described a battery hot enough to force a cooling stop. A charger that smells of burning, or that trips the RCD, is a stop. Leave a swollen pack alone, tape the terminals, and take it to a battery recycling point. GOV.UK is clear that lithium packs do not go in the household bin. A chipped blade you will not fit yourself belongs with a shop. Faulty goods from a trader sit under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9. From March to October the RHS rhythm is weekly or fortnightly, and less often in a drought.

Common questions

When is the lawn dry enough?
When your shoes stay dry and the clippings do not smear into a paste on the deck. Dew, an overnight shower, or shaded grass that is still cool and wet will clog a cordless mower faster than a dry afternoon. The RHS says not to mow in the wet. Waiting until later the same day is the usual fix on a small UK lawn.
How high is the first cut?
High enough that you remove no more than one-third of the grass. If it has sat near 60 mm, aim nearer 40 mm and come back. The RHS puts spring and autumn around 4 cm for an ordinary lawn, and summer around 2.5 cm. A new lawn waits until it is about 5 cm. Do not use the lowest stop for that first April pass.
How do you start a cordless mower safely?
Fit the pack, keep your feet away from the deck, then use the two-step pattern many machines share: a safety button, then the bail bar. Your manual wins if it shows a key or a different order. Release the bar to stop the blade. Take the pack off before you leave the mower, even for a short break.
What if the deck clogs?
Release the bar, remove the battery, and only then clear the chute. A stick is safer than your hand. Wet or over-long grass is the usual cause in these reviews. Raise the height, let the lawn dry, and take a second pass another day rather than forcing the bottom stop.
When should a shop sharpen the blade?
When the cut tears the grass instead of clipping it, or when the blade is chipped, and you do not want to remove and refit it yourself. Take the pack out first if you do the bolt at home, and follow the manual for which side faces up. A charger that burns or trips the RCD, and any new outdoor socket, are also jobs to stop and hand to someone qualified.
