How to use a Bosch hedge trimmer

Updated: October 2026

You have one garden hedge to cut, and the ways this goes wrong are a cut cable, a hand near the bar, or a nest you did not see. How to use a Bosch hedge trimmer starts before the motor runs. The [Bosch hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/bosch-hedge-trimmer) is where the model lives. If the tooth gap is wrong, that decision is in the [Bosch hedge trimmer buying guide](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/bosch-hedge-trimmer/sub/bosch-hedge-trimmer-buying-guide). If the top is above your head, read the [Bosch hedge trimmer for tall hedges](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/bosch-hedge-trimmer/sub/bosch-hedge-trimmer-tall-hedges) page before anyone climbs. Peter F. did not lab-test these tools. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before you switch it on

A corded Bosch cutter in the UK should meet a BS 1363 plug on a 230 V supply. Electrical Safety First wants that plug, a splashproof outdoor socket, and RCD protection, because a cut cable can cause a shock. The Health and Safety Executive says an RCD used to reduce injury risk should trip at not more than 30 mA. One EasyHedgeCut 45 review needed a two-pin to three-pin adapter. Do not add an adapter and carry on. Keep the pack off a cordless tool until you are in position. A green POWER FOR ALL pack fits only a green Easy or Universal tool, and a blue AMPShare pack only a blue GHE tool. Which? wants the blade cover on while you carry the tool. Walk the face once before the first cut, looking for wire, string and nests.

How the two switches work

These cutters run only when both hands are on the tool. One hand holds the rear switch. The other holds the front bail. Release either one and the blades should stop. DEKRA UK warns that people are hurt when they tie a switch down to reach further. Do not tie a switch. If you cannot keep both feet on firm ground, the tool is the wrong length. Start with a short test away from the hedge, cable already behind you. If the motor smells hot, the RCD trips, or the blades stall, stop.

The cut, the cable, and a jam

Cut the sides with the bar vertical, and take the top only when you can do it without leaning out. Keep the cable on the finished side, behind your body, and stop if you lose sight of it. Do not use the tool in the rain. Unplug, or take the pack off, before you look into the teeth. Anti-blocking does not let a 15 mm Easy gap swallow a stem that will not fit. If the blades jam, release the switches, make the tool dead, and only then pull the stem out. Kit reviews of the Universal 18V-50 say the blades needed oil and that none was in the box. Put the blade cover on before you carry the tool back.

Nests, and when to stop

Wild birds' nests in use are protected in England, Scotland and Wales under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and in Northern Ireland under the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. The RSPB prefers cutting from 1 September to 28 February. If you find an active nest, leave that stretch. A garden privet is not automatically an agricultural hedgerow. England restricts cutting of those farm hedgerows from 1 March to 31 August, and you still must not destroy a nest that is in use. Call someone else when both feet cannot stay on firm ground, when the boundary is a farm hedgerow in that closed season, when you find an active nest, or when the job is beside a road, a drop or a power line.

Common questions

How do you start a Bosch hedge trimmer?
Use an RCD-protected outdoor socket, or fit the correct pack only when you are in position. Both hands hold the two switches, and the blades should run only while both are held. Test away from the hedge with the cable already behind you. If a switch has to be tied to reach the top, stop and change the tool.
Where should the cable sit?
Put the cable behind you, on the shoulder away from the bar, so each sweep moves away from the lead. A lead along the uncut face is the one the teeth find. If you lose sight of it, stop and reroute it. A cordless tool still needs the pack off before you clear a jam.
Do you need an RCD?
Yes for a corded cutter. Electrical Safety First wants the outdoor socket RCD-protected. The Health and Safety Executive says an RCD used to reduce injury risk should trip at not more than 30 mA, and that you press the test button. It does not make rain or a two-pin adapter acceptable.
Can you use it in the rain?
No. Electrical Safety First advises against using a hedge trimmer in the rain. Wait for a dry spell, then check the plug and the lead. A cordless tool is not a reason to work in a downpour either.
What do you do if the blades jam?
Release both switches. Unplug a corded tool, or take the pack off a cordless one, before you look at the teeth. Pull the stem out only after the tool is dead. If the same stem jams again, it is thicker than the teeth.
Can you cut a garden hedge in May?
Only after you have looked and found no nest in use. The RSPB prefers 1 September to 28 February. An active nest is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, or the 1985 Order in Northern Ireland. If you find a nest, leave that stretch.
When do you call someone else?
Call a professional if both feet cannot stay on firm ground, if you find an active nest, or if the work is beside a road, a drop or a power line. A tied switch means the two-handed tool has already been defeated.
