How to style artificial hanging plants

Updated: 21 October 2026

The bag looks disappointing, and that is usually the packing rather than a different plant. If you are working out how to style artificial hanging plants you have just opened, separate the stems, decide the height, and stop a light pot from tipping. It is not a ranking, and it is not a watering schedule. These packs weigh about 170 g to 1.07 kg. The cards are on the [hanging plant comparison](/hub/houseplants/hanging-plant). Unpack and shape

Compression is normal. Leaf’s fluff guide says foliage arrives squashed, that you work from the centre outwards, and that creases can relax over a day or two. MFI says you should not hang one perfect curtain: separate the strands and let some fall shorter. UK reviews of the Der Rose four-pack mention stems that come apart, and Lafecuw reviews mention broken stems. Pull gently. If a stem is already loose, stop. Do not start with a hairdryer. These are thin plastic stems in pots about 8–9 cm wide. A snapped stem will not ease overnight, and glue is a repair rather than a styling step. What should have been in the box is the hanging plant buying guide.

Height and drop

Put the plant where you do not look down into the pot. DREAMS 21 reviewers say the stems entering the white pot are not convincing from above. A high bookcase hides that joint. A 24 inch Der Rose eucalyptus can finish in the air. A 100 cm Lafecuw vine from the same shelf will sit on the floor unless you coil it. The four-pack states drops from 20.1 to 33.9 inches, so the pots will not finish in one line. The JISRKP vines are 75 cm with no pot, so the drop is whatever is left in your container. DazSpirit’s 10 mm line against an 8 cm pot is not a drop you can plan around.

Pots that tip

The pots in this set are light. BTSD-home buyers say the foliage pulls small white pots over unless they sit in another holder. DREAMS 21 reviewers report the same tip. A cachepot hides the starter pot and adds weight. Do not glue a stone into an 8–9 cm pot. There is little room, and that is how you snap the stalk you just shaped. If the plant must hang, the bullets have to include a hook. On the single eucalyptus they say the hook is not included. A watered basket around 30 cm can weigh several kilograms, against these dry parcels of 170 g to 1.07 kg. An unknown wall or a commercial ceiling is where you stop and call someone who can see the fixing.

Smell and dust

A new-plastic smell is a repeated UK comment, and airing is not a promise it will clear. Der Rose, Lafecuw and DREAMS 21 reviews mention it, often as something that faded. DazSpirit’s small file includes a funky smell. One BTSD-home buyer binned the pair. Open the bag where you can ventilate it, and give it a day. DazSpirit’s features say washable. Other listings do not. A damp cloth is enough. Soaking a grey paper-pulp pot, the upright half of the DazSpirit set, turns dry décor soggy. Dust is the long-term job, not watering. If a stem snaps, stop. None of this makes the plastic fire-retardant. A café ceiling is a Kent Fire and Rescue question, not a shelf question.

Common questions

Why does it look flat out of the box?
The stems have been packed flat. Leaf’s guide treats that compression as normal and says creases can ease over a day or two if you separate the foliage from the centre outwards. It will not look like the styled photograph until you have done that. If a stem is already detached, shaping will not put it back.
Can I bend the stems?
Gently, and only while the stem stays seated. MFI suggests separating strands so the trail is uneven rather than one sheet. Stop if a stalk feels loose. These are thin plastic pieces, and reviews mention snaps on the Der Rose four-pack and on Lafecuw. A hairdryer routine written for larger silk trees is a poor match for an 8 cm pot.
The pot falls over. What now?
Sit the plastic pot inside a heavier outer pot, or fix it the way BTSD-home reviewers describe: stuck down, or dropped into another holder. DREAMS 21 pots tip under the leaves as well. Do not add a guessed weight inside a pot about 8–9 cm wide. If the listing never included a hook, a wall hook is a separate purchase, not something the photo owed you.
Should the plant sit above eye level?
Yes, if you can. The joint where the stems enter the pot is the part that looks like plastic, and DREAMS 21 reviewers say the plants look better when you are not looking down into that joint. A high shelf also lets a longer drop, such as Lafecuw’s 100 cm, hang clear of the floor. A low bookcase makes a long vine pool.
How do I hide the plastic pot?
Use a cachepot wider than the starter pot. The pots here are about 8–9 cm where a width is stated, and a heavier outer pot is also the usual way to stop that light base tipping. Hiding the pot does not make a missing hook appear, and it does not add foliage the listing never stated.
Is a picture hook enough for a real watered basket?
No. A watered basket around 30 cm can weigh several kilograms. These faux parcels are about 170 g to 1.07 kg and they are dry. A picture hook may hold a light plastic pot, and it is the wrong fixing for a wet basket or a ceiling you have not opened.
