How to clean artificial plants

Updated: 21 October 2026

The box is open, the leaves are crushed, and the room smells of new plastic. How to clean artificial plants starts before any water: air what smells, open what the listing says you can shape, and keep pulp pots and fabric leaves dry. Dust is the job that remains after that first day. The twelve prices are on the [artificial plants comparison](/hub/houseplants/artificial-plants). The first day, before any water

Crushed leaves are normal. Missing stalks are not, and washing will not grow one. Which listing to buy is on best artificial plants. Click on the Monstera's 18 leaves. Pull the Leaf ficus wires out. Fluff Der Rose trails. Untangle CQURE, then bend or cut. Fluff UXORSN's wired stems into a planter you supply. Air a smell in a ventilated room, away from a candle and a heater. DazSpirit says one to two days. Do not invent a vinegar mist. If the smell is still the whole room, talk to the seller.

What you can wipe

Dust with a soft dry cloth from the top down, then, if you know the leaf is plastic, wipe with lukewarm water and a drop of washing-up liquid and dry it. Good Housekeeping UK and Leaf are the sources for that order. Bleach, polish and leaf-shine sprays are out. Keep the pot out of the bowl, and do not flood AlphaAcc's stones. If Lafecuw's unnamed leaf might be fabric, stop at the dry cloth. Elecoutek's bullets say PVC and the material field says foam. DazSpirit says washable while two pots are pulp. Do not soak either item to settle the clash.

What not to soak

Elecoutek says do not submerge the pulp pots, and a UK review describes a damp base breaking up. RV MURTS is pulp without that sentence. Do not invent a soak. DazSpirit's pulp pair stays dry even though the feature line says washable. The hanging pair is plastic. CQURE's leaves are fabric, so dust them and keep silk dry, which is Leaf's rule for an unnamed leaf too. Do not swish the ivy. Elecoutek's grey flocking is finish, not dirt. Moss, gravel and wood stay out of the sink. Hot water is out. A hairdryer is only a cool puff, held back.

Dust after that

Dust is the job that remains, every few weeks in an ordinary room. A cool hairdryer or a soft brush reaches crevices the cloth misses. Hold it back so you move dust rather than soften plastic. A steamy room leaves a film that holds the next layer sooner. If the material is unclear, stay with the dry cloth. Sun fade is not cured by wiping.

When cleaning will not fix it

A missing stalk, a broken pot on arrival, or 11 ivy strands instead of 12 is a description problem. Section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the usual 30-day short-term right to reject. Shaping repairs a bend. It does not replace a stem left out of the box. Keep vines off candles and heaters. No file here has a fire certificate, and a non-flammable bullet is not one. Dusting is not a hypoallergenic claim. A chewed quantity of plastic is a medical or vet question, not a wash.

Common questions

How do you clean artificial plants without wrecking them?
Dust from the top down with a soft dry cloth. If the leaf is plastic, wipe with lukewarm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, then dry it, and keep the pot dry. If the leaf is fabric, silk or unnamed, stop at the dry cloth. No bleach, polish or hot dryer. Good Housekeeping UK and Leaf describe that split.
What do you do when they arrive flat?
Open the stems the listing expects you to open. Click the Monstera's 18 leaves on. Pull the Leaf ficus wires out. Fluff Der Rose trails and untangle CQURE ivy. Crushed leaves are normal. A stalk that is absent, rather than bent, is not fixed by fluffing. Compare the parcel with the photo and the bullet before you start washing.
How long should a new fake plant air if it smells?
DazSpirit's own bullets say one to two days if they smell. CQURE reviews mention a smell without giving you a tested clearance time, so use a ventilated room and the same sort of pause rather than a spray. This page does not claim the smell is harmless or harmful. If it has not eased in the time the listing suggests, talk to the seller.
Can you wash artificial ivy or silk leaves?
CQURE's leaves are fabric, and Leaf's rule is to keep silk dry. Dust those leaves. Do not soak them, and do not assume a washable feature line covers a paper-pulp pot on the same page, which is the DazSpirit clash. A plastic stem can be wiped if the fabric leaf stays dry.
Can you soak a paper-pulp pot?
No. Elecoutek says do not submerge the pulp pots, and a UK review describes a damp base breaking up. RV MURTS and DazSpirit's pulp pots get the same treatment even where the file never prints that sentence. Wipe plastic leaves beside them, and leave the pot dry.
When is a missing stem a return, not a cleaning job?
When the listing showed stalks or a vine count you did not receive. Shaping repairs a bend. It does not replace a missing stem. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the match-the-description point, and section 22 is the usual 30-day right to reject.
