Water booster pump for a combi boiler

Updated: 17.10.2026

A water booster pump for a combi boiler must be designed for the incoming mains and kept within the UK flow rules. It is not the pump that sits beside a vented cylinder. None of the eight products in the [water booster pump comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-booster-pump) has enough evidence to recommend as that mains solution. The Bristan twin forbids direct mains connection. Cheap inline listings mention boilers without a documented 12 L/min limit. First check whether the incoming flow, the pipework or the boiler is the constraint. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A combi is supplied from the mains

A combi heats domestic water on demand from the incoming cold main. It does not normally have the vented cylinder and loft cistern that feed a gravity shower pump. The Bristan ST PUMP15TN boosts separate stored hot and cold supplies. Its instructions say it must not connect directly to the mains, so an adapter or a lower setting does not make it a combi pump. An unvented cylinder is also mains-pressure equipment. If the system is unclear, the water booster pump buying guide explains the checks. Felenny and Gugxiom bullets may mention hot water, showers or boilers. Their extracts do not show a controlled mains duty, a regulatory limit, or a model-specific approval. An inline body and a flow switch do not prove the pump may go on a supply pipe.

Understand the 12 litres per minute line

In England and Wales, regulation 5 of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 includes a pump drawing more than 12 L/min from a supply pipe among work you must notify to the water undertaker. Staying at or below that figure does not make every pump acceptable. Location, backflow protection and the maker's instructions still have to suit the system. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own water-fittings instruments, with the same 12 L/min concept. Follow the local provider rather than an England-and-Wales form. The figure is what the booster draws from the supply pipe, not an open-flow marketing maximum. A listing that claims 25, 32 or 35 L/min without a documented 12 L/min control is not automatically suitable. The Felenny variants claim 32 L/min and the Aolidsive says 35 L/min. Neither extract shows a compliant mains-booster function.

What a purpose-designed mains booster looks like

Salamander HomeBoost is context for the product class, and it is not one of the eight listings. Its guide allows the incoming cold main or the cold inlet to a combi, limits boosted flow to 12 L/min, and idles when the main already delivers that amount. It must not go on a communal riser. WRAS entry 2212082 covers HomeBoost and CombiBoost for cold-water use until 31 December 2027. It cannot be transferred to BritTherm, Bristan or a 24 V unit. A mains booster does not increase the boiler's heating capacity. If inlet flow exceeds what the combi can heat, hot delivery can still disappoint. The family split is in water booster pump versus shower pump: a gravity twin handles stored hot and cold, and a documented mains booster manages incoming cold flow within its stated rules.

What to do with a weak combi shower

Measure flow at a cold tap with other outlets closed, then repeat while the problem is happening. A six-second container test multiplied by ten estimates litres per minute. Note whether every outlet is weak, or only the hot water, or only busy periods. Healthy cold flow with poor hot flow points at the boiler, filters, heat exchanger, service valves or the mixer. A booster cannot repair scale or a partly closed valve. If hot and cold are both weak, check the service pipe, stop tap and any pressure-reducing valve, and ask the water supplier before you buy a pump. If boosting is appropriate, choose a model documented for a combi inlet or the incoming main, including controlled flow, approval and backflow. Gas work stays with a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not follow a gravity fitting sequence. The water booster pump installation guide redirects mains-fed homes, because cylinder take-offs and twin-pump priming do not apply.

Common questions

Can I put a shower pump on a combi boiler?
Not a conventional gravity shower pump. A combi is fed from the mains and lacks the stored hot and cold arrangement that a twin shower pump expects. The Bristan ST PUMP15TN instructions explicitly prohibit direct mains connection. Where boosting is appropriate, use a purpose-designed mains product specified for the combi inlet and the applicable flow rules.
Why do some inline listings mention showers and boilers?
Marketplace bullets often list possible uses without the system details needed for a UK installation. A reference to a boiler does not prove that the pump controls mains draw to 12 L/min, has model-specific approval, or is allowed on a supply pipe. Ask for the manufacturer's UK instructions and approval details rather than relying on title keywords.
What does the 12 L/min rule mean?
Under regulation 5 in England and Wales, a pump drawing more than 12 L/min from a supply pipe is a notifiable installation. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own instruments with the same general flow concept. The threshold does not make every lower-flow pump suitable. Product instructions, approvals and water-system requirements still apply.
Will any of these eight amazon.co.uk pumps work on a combi?
None has enough evidence in the available listing extract to recommend it as a purpose-designed combi mains booster. The Bristan forbids mains connection, and the small inline units do not document a controlled 12 L/min mains duty. The self-priming KATSU 151438 also says it is not suitable for drinking water.
Can I boost a shared riser in a flat?
Do not assume so. A booster on a communal riser can affect neighbouring properties, and products such as Salamander HomeBoost expressly exclude that installation. Ask the building manager or freeholder, the water provider and a competent plumber to identify the supply arrangement and the permissions before you choose equipment.
