Combi vs system boiler

Updated: October 2026

Two taps are open at once, the shower falls away, and the listing says condensing as if that word chose the layout. Combi vs system boiler is the choice that decides whether hot water is made as you use it or drawn from a cylinder. Condensing only means the boiler recovers heat from the flue gas. It does not say whether there is a cylinder. The [condensing boiler comparison](/hub/hot-water/condensing-boiler) lists twelve amazon.co.uk appliances saved on 20 October 2026, priced from £951.54 to £5,437.54, and not one card uses the word system. A Gas Safe engineer still sizes and fits whatever you buy, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Condensing is not a layout

Vaillant UK states the split in plain language: a condensing boiler is not the same thing as a combi. Condensing is the heat recovery. A combi heats taps from the mains and does not use a hot-water cylinder. Since April 2005, new gas boilers have had to be condensing, whether the layout is a combi, a system boiler or heat-only. England’s rule for gas wet heating in Approved Document L Volume 1 is 92% ErP. That is a rule for the work, not a measurement of these twelve cards. The only energy class printed is on the Vaillant ecoCOMPACT, class A for heat and for water. The checks before you pay, including the fuel word, are in the condensing boiler buying guide.

When stored hot water is the point

The Energy Saving Trust describes three layouts. A combi has no cylinder. It is the usual fit for one bathroom with decent mains pressure, and it struggles when two outlets run together, because both taps ask the boiler for heat at the same moment. A system boiler stores hot water in a cylinder and does without the old loft tanks. A heat-only boiler still needs header tanks above the highest tap, which is why the Trust treats it as a weak choice for a flat. If a shower and a kitchen tap often run together, stored hot water is the point to raise with the engineer. Do not paste bedroom-count kilowatt bands from other sites onto these ASINs. Output comes from a heat-loss calculation.

What this set actually prints

Read the cards for the layout word, not the brand. The Beretta Mynute X 25 C, £1,208.84 and 20 kg, is titled combined and wall-hung, and it prints no hot-water flow. The Immergas Victrix Pro, £2,858.53, says heating only, and the title prints both 55 kW and 50 kW. The Wolf CGB-2 20, £2,558.25, refers to a heating circuit and does not say combi. The Vaillant ecoCOMPACT, £5,437.54, is a floor boiler of 140 kg. Do not read 150 in the model string as litres. No card uses the word system. The Sime Vera HE 30, £980.61, prints the only flow, 13.5 litres per minute, and it does not say combi, system or heating only. A 5.1 litre cell is not described as a cylinder.

What a bigger kilowatt number does not prove

A higher kilowatt figure is heat into the heating circuit. It is not a promise that two showers will run. The Victrix Pro’s 55 kW and 50 kW sit on a heating-only card with no hot-water flow, so that row is not a combi. A large kilowatt number does not raise a weak main. The engineer measures the main and the heat loss, then chooses combi, system or heat-only. For two outlets at once, ask for stored hot water. The word system is missing from this set.

Fazit: stored water when two outlets run

If one bathroom has decent mains pressure, a combi is the usual Energy Saving Trust starting point, and condensing does not make that choice for you. If a shower and a tap often run together, ask the engineer about stored hot water. None of these twelve cards says system. Combined on the Mynute is a title without a flow. Heating only on the Victrix Pro is not a combi, whatever the kilowatt line says.

Common questions

Is a condensing boiler the same as a combi?
No. Condensing means the boiler recovers heat from the flue gas. A combi heats the taps from the mains and has no cylinder. Vaillant UK states that split, and new gas boilers have had to be condensing since April 2005. A system boiler and a heat-only boiler can be condensing as well.
When does a system boiler beat a combi?
A system boiler stores hot water, so a shower and a tap can draw together. The Energy Saving Trust points to that stored water when demand is high, and to a combi for one bathroom with decent mains pressure. None of these twelve listings uses the word system, so you cannot tick it from this table.
What is a heat-only boiler in this choice?
A heat-only boiler heats the radiators and a cylinder, and it still needs header tanks above the highest tap. The Energy Saving Trust treats that as a poor fit for a flat. In this set the Wolf title refers to a heating circuit and the Victrix Pro says heating only. Neither prints a hot-water flow.
Can two showers run from a combi?
A combi can struggle as soon as two outlets run, because it has no cylinder to draw on. Low mains pressure makes that worse. These cards do not print a second flow. Only the Sime card prints any flow, 13.5 litres per minute, and it does not say the boiler is a combi.
Which of these cards actually say combined or heating only?
The Beretta Mynute X 25 C title says combined. The Immergas Victrix Pro bullet says heating only. The Wolf title refers to a heating circuit. The Vaillant ecoCOMPACT title says floor and layering, not combined. No card says system. The Exclusive 25C and the Victoria 24/24F are not called combis here, because the cards never use that word. Combined on the Mynute still comes without a printed flow.
Does a higher kilowatt figure fix simultaneous hot water?
No. Kilowatts describe heating output. Litres per minute describe the tap, and mains flow describes what the street pipe can deliver. The Victrix Pro title prints 55 kW and 50 kW on a heating-only listing, which does not create a combi. Bedroom-count kilowatt bands from other sites are not applied to these ASINs. The engineer sizes from a heat-loss calculation.
