Condensing boiler buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are about to order a condensing boiler from a short amazon.co.uk card, and the title already reads like a finished specification. The box line often says only boiler, and the flue, the filter and the labour are missing. This condensing boiler buying guide puts the checks in the order those cards fail them: layout, the fuel word, output and flow kept apart, then the carton and the paperwork. Prices on 20 October 2026 run from £951.54 to £5,437.54 in the [condensing boiler comparison](/hub/hot-water/condensing-boiler). There was no lab test. A Gas Safe registered engineer still sizes and fits the boiler, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you check first

The first check is the layout, before any kilowatt figure. Condensing is heat recovered from the flue gases. Combi, system and heat-only describe where the hot water is made. A combi heats water as it passes through and has no cylinder. A system boiler works with a cylinder and carries the pump and expansion vessel on the boiler. A heat-only boiler needs a cylinder, with the pump and vessel usually outside the casing. A shower and a kitchen tap running together show why. A combi has to supply both outlets in that moment. A system or heat-only layout draws stored hot water. Settle that choice on the combi or system boiler page before you compare output.

Fuel wording on the card

Read the fuel word as a string on the listing, not as proof of the gas at your meter. Titles here use methane, CNG and LPG. Methane and CNG usually mean natural gas in a manufacturer’s wording. LPG means gas from a tank or from bottles. None of those strings confirms mains gas in your home or jets for a British install. A card that prints CNG or methane and then stops has not settled the supply. If the title says LPG, leave it off a mains-gas order. Fitting a gas appliance when you are not qualified is illegal. A Gas Safe registered engineer confirms the supply against the data plate before you treat the order as final.

Output, flow, and the box

Kilowatts and litres per minute answer different questions, and these cards almost never print both. Kilowatts are heat into the radiators. Litres per minute are hot water at the tap. The Sime card is the only row with a flow, 13.5 litres per minute, so a kilowatt headline on the other cards is not a shower specification. Most box cells say boiler or are empty, so a flue, a filter and a condensate pipe are not confirmed. Two cards print 40.4 g and 72.8 g. A wall-hung boiler is not a forty-gram object, so both figures are card errors. Only the Vaillant card prints an energy class, and it prints A.

Paperwork after a legal install

The paperwork starts only after a legal install. You cannot commission the boiler yourself to take the labour off the quote. In England the engineer notifies the work so a Building Regulations certificate can be issued. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do not copy that English line. Ask which certificate applies at your address. Approved Document L’s 92% ErP figure for gas wet heating in England is not a reading from these cards. No card states a warranty length. Expect a completed Benchmark record where that duty applies. The price is the appliance only.

Fazit: stop when a check fails

If the layout word is missing, stop before you compare kilowatts. If the fuel cells disagree, or the weight is printed in grams, the lower shelf price is not a reason to pay. If the box line only says boiler, the flue, the filter and the labour belong on the engineer’s quote. The handover record is the last check, and it is not the same document in every nation of the UK.

Common questions

What should you check before you pay for a condensing boiler?
Check the layout, then the fuel word, then output and hot-water flow as separate figures, then the box line. Ask what paperwork a Gas Safe engineer will leave. A cell that says boiler has not confirmed a flue, a filter or the labour.
Is a condensing boiler the same decision as combi, system, or heat-only?
Condensing describes heat recovered from the flue gases. Combi, system and heat-only describe the cylinder, the pump and how the taps are fed. A condensing combi can still be the wrong layout where the pipework was built around a cylinder. The kilowatt figure does not choose for you. If two outlets may run together, settle the layout before you compare output.
What does CNG or methane on an amazon.co.uk title actually settle?
They show only what was printed on the title. Methane and CNG usually mean natural gas in a manufacturer’s wording, and LPG means tank or bottled gas. They do not confirm mains gas at your meter or jets for a British supply. A Gas Safe engineer checks the data plate against the gas you have, separately from the layout choice.
Does the appliance price include the flue, filter, and fitting?
The card price is the appliance. Most box lines say boiler or are empty, so the flue, filter and labour belong on the engineer’s quote. Fitting the gas yourself is illegal if you are not qualified. That price is not a fitted cost.
Which paperwork should the Gas Safe engineer leave you?
Ask for the completed Benchmark commissioning record and for the Building Regulations notification where that duty applies. In England the engineer notifies the work. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do not follow that English line, so ask which record applies to you. No card states a warranty length, so the handover is not a seven-year or ten-year promise on the listing.
Why is 92% not a figure you can paste onto these listings?
The 92% ErP figure is England’s rule for gas wet heating in an existing dwelling, and paragraph 6.2 is for a gas combi. It is not a reading from these amazon.co.uk cards. Only the Vaillant card prints an energy class, and it prints A. That English document is not the local rule in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
What is still missing on a card that only says boiler in the box?
The flue, filter, condensate route, controls and any warranty length are still unstated. Two cards print 40.4 g and 72.8 g, which are listing errors, not a carcass weight. Flow is blank except on the Sime card, at 13.5 litres per minute.
