Stinging nettle seeds UK: five lines on the packet

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to pay for a packet that says nettle, and the amazon.co.uk results are not one product. Stinging nettle seeds in the UK, here, are sowing packets of Urtica dioica or Urtica urens, plus one red dead-nettle that does not sting. A 100 g bag with the same name is food. Read the Latin name, a light-sowing line, the life cycle, a count you can compare, then organic, and only then the price. The nine listings are on the [nettle seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/nettle-seeds). Peter F. checked the listings, not a germination trial. Three different products share the name

Indigo Herbs sells nettle seeds by the 100 g, about £7.45 to £9.45, for salads and stews. Baldwins' organic nettle seed, from about £6.39, is sold by weight as a herbal ingredient. Those bags can be right in the kitchen and still be the wrong object if you wanted plants. Just Seed, 100 seeds at about £3.40, is Lamium purpureum, about 22 cm, and the page does not say it stings. The sowing packets here are DAMAVAND PRO, both Buy4seeds rows, the generic title, both SAFLAX rows, SemiSauvage, and La Lettre S.

Five lines on the label

Urtica dioica is common stinging nettle, a UK native perennial, H7 on the RHS profile, with a spread of 2.5–4 m. Urtica urens is small nettle, the annual usually under 60 cm. SemiSauvage says wild nettle and 1,000 seeds at about £4.03, with no Latin name in the extract. Buy4seeds, at about £8.99, says surface sow and do not bury. DAMAVAND PRO, 1,300 seeds at about £3.11, says plant 1 inch deep. SAFLAX organic, 2,000 seeds of Urtica dioica at about £4.55, calls the plant an annual. The RHS treats common nettle as a perennial, so that word is a listing error. GMO free is not organic.

What the amazon.co.uk packets actually show

DAMAVAND PRO passes species, perennial, and one count of 1,300, then fails the sowing line with a 1 inch depth. Sun is full sun in one attribute and shade in the bullets. The height field says 30 cm. The generic packet at about £2.85 prints 1,200, 120, and 300, with no sow line. Both Buy4seeds cards pass surface sowing at about £8.99, with one review each and a shared image URL. SAFLAX organic is 3.9 from 134 reviews, and the theme is empty trays. Who should skip each row is on best nettle seeds.

Price is the last check

A normal packet here sits at about £1.80 to £4.55. About £8.99 does not show a better documented germination rate. The best value line is the £2.85 packet only as the lowest perennial Urtica dioica price. The top pick is the £3.11 packet whose count does not fight itself. Neither badge is a germination certificate. The life-cycle choice is on common nettle or small nettle. GOV.UK's plant-passport list for seed moving in Great Britain does not name Urtica. If a sting affects breathing, or the mouth and throat, that is a 999 call.

Common questions

What Latin name should be on the packet?
For a lasting stinging patch, the packet should say Urtica dioica. For an annual that frost can end, it should say Urtica urens. Lamium purpureum is red dead-nettle and does not sting. A title that only says wild nettle, such as the SemiSauvage listing at about £4.03, does not tell you which of those plants you will grow.
Is a 50 g or 100 g bag for sowing or for eating?
Weight sold for the kitchen is a different product. Indigo Herbs' 100 g nettle seeds, about £7.45 to £9.45, are described for salads and stews. Baldwins sells organic nettle seed by weight as a herbal ingredient, from about £6.39. A sowing packet in this amazon.co.uk set is a small count or, in one case, 0.3 g sold as green manure, not a 100 g food bag.
Does organic or GMO free mean certified organic seed?
Only if that listing actually says organic. SAFLAX's Urtica dioica title does. DAMAVAND PRO says GMO free and untreated, and does not say organic. SAFLAX dog nettle says natural. Just Seed prints an organic registration number, AP23164, on a dead-nettle packet. That number is what the listing states. It is not a certificate this page has verified, and it does not turn Lamium into stinging nettle.
Is red dead-nettle the same purchase as stinging nettle?
No. Just Seed at about £3.40 is Lamium purpureum, 100 seeds, with a 22 cm height field. It can be a short flower for bees. It is not the plant peacock or small tortoiseshell caterpillars use, and the listing does not claim a sting. If your search was stinging nettle seeds, this row is the lookalike, not a cheaper version of the same plant.
Do I need a plant passport to buy a packet?
The GOV.UK list of seeds that need a plant passport for movement in Great Britain does not name Urtica. Tomato, pea, bean, onion, and similar crops are the examples on that list. Live plants for planting are a separate trade rule. A packet for your own garden is still not permission to release seed into the countryside.
Are star ratings from outside the UK still the amazon.co.uk number?
Yes. The stars and the review counts on these pages are the amazon.co.uk listing figures, including reviews written in other countries. SemiSauvage's written extract is from Spain and France. Many comments on the large SAFLAX file are not from the UK either. Use them as reports about that packet, not as a British germination survey.
