How to fit a magnetic fly screen: one clean press only

Updated: 21 October 2026

The screen is on the kitchen table, the backing paper is still on, and the uPVC looks clean enough. It usually is not. How to fit a magnetic fly screen is one clean, one press, and a hard stop before you cut a door curtain or nail a rented frame. The adhesive is one-shot. A window kit is the product you are allowed to cut, and it is slower than the box claims. Size rows sit on the [magnetic fly screen comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/fly-screen-magnet). Products Compared did not fit these screens in a lab. The steps follow maker notes and UK reviews from 19 October 2026.

Before any tape

Measure the frame, not the door slab. WENT's 110 by 220 cm already includes the edge Velcro. SMALUCK wants about 2 inches extra over the door. DDGAO wants at least 8 cm extra width and 6 cm extra height. If the cloth is short, stop. More pins will not invent mesh. Clean until the frame is dry and free of grease. Moskera describes a solvent wipe and also a damp cloth. Use the method printed with the screen you bought. Lay the mesh flat first. DDGAO says to allow 2 to 3 cm if you do not. Choose the type in the magnetic fly screen buying guide before you cut.

Fitting a door curtain

Door tape goes on the top and both sides, not the floor, so the weighted hem can hang. Flyscreen Queen says not to cut the screen, because the weights and magnet strips sit in the mesh. A SMALUCK review says that curtain could not be narrowed. If it is too wide, return it. On uPVC, several WENT reviews only held after the surface was prepared, and some screwed a timber batten on first. Pins, and the thumbtacks in the Flux Phenom box, mark a rented frame. Walk through with empty hands, then with a mug. One WENT reviewer left the bottom about a centimetre short so the door still shut. Do not machine-wash a curtain the listing says to hand-wash. Wind can part the split.

Fitting a window kit

Kits are the ones you cut. MiLeJu goes up to 120 by 130 cm, NeatiEase to 100 by 130 cm, JOOFAN to 79 by 145 cm. Cut once, under the maximum, and cut the strips to the same opening. Reviews say the magnetic strip runs out before a second window. NeatiEase says about 10 minutes and MiLeJu about 15. Reviewers more often describe 20 to 60 minutes, sometimes an hour or two for JOOFAN. Seat the adhesive, then the grooved strip, then the mesh. JOOFAN's hatch clashes with a night latch and a trickle vent in UK reviews. If the vent has to come off, stop. The curtain-or-kit fork is on magnetic fly screen door or window.

When to stop

Stop before pins or a batten go into a rented or listed frame. Ask first. Stop too if the frame is crumbling, the opening is a wide slider, or a fire strategy requires the screen. No kit here carries a British Standard number for its fire-retardant wording. SMALUCK says removal leaves no marks, and one review reports glue. If the hem still gaps after the tape has cured, the size was wrong. Reorder, or use a made-to-measure screen.

Common questions

Do I stick tape along the floor?
Not on these door curtains. Tape the top and both sides so the weighted hem can hang. A strip across the threshold trips you. Daylight at the bottom is a short curtain or a twisted hem, not a missing fourth strip.
Can I reposition the Velcro?
Treat the first placement as the only clean one. SMALUCK reviews describe the backing paper as one-shot once it is peeled. Mark the line before you peel, and press for the cure time before a dog or a shopping bag tests it.
May I cut the door curtain?
No. Flyscreen Queen says not to trim a magnetic door screen, because the hem weights and the magnet seam are in the cloth. A SMALUCK review says the 80 by 200 cm curtain could not be narrowed. If it is too wide, reorder.
How do I cut a window kit without running out of strip?
Cut one opening. Measure the perimeter, then cut the magnetic strip and the plastic strip to that frame. Reviews on MiLeJu, NeatiEase and JOOFAN say the strip finishes before the mesh. Leftover net is not a spare window.
How do I know it has worked?
Walk through several times, including once with your hands full, and watch the magnets meet. Open the door so the hem is not trapped. For a kit, lift the panel off and seat it again. A gap in daylight is the fault, not the star line.
When should I stop and ask the landlord?
Before any pin, nail or batten, and before tape if the tenancy forbids marks. Residue is a real review complaint even when a listing promises a clean removal. A listed building is the same pause.
