Spindle roughing gouge: between centres, not on a bowl

Updated: 24 October 2026

You are about to knock a square blank round, and the widest gouge on the rack looks like the obvious tool. If the grain runs along the lathe bed, that is what a spindle roughing gouge is for. If the blank is a bowl on a faceplate or a screw chuck, the same flute is the wrong tool. Robert Sorby recommends these gouges for uneven or square spindle stock and states they are not designed for bowl-grain projects. Shelf prices for the wider kit sit on the [turning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/turning-chisel). Peter F. checked this limit on 22 October 2026. What the roughing gouge is for

A spindle roughing gouge rounds stock held between centres, as in a chair leg or a tool handle. Henry Taylor describes these gouges as tools used between centres to take the corners off with a slicing cut. Present the bevel, keep the wings back, and let the bottom of the flute slice while the blank is still proud of round. On a 40 mm square blank, about 250 mm between centres, set the rest close and let the first passes only nick the arrises. Do not bury the flute in a face that is still square. WIS28 treats leftover corners and a blunt tool as ejection factors. Once the blank is round, finer tools take over, on how to use a turning chisel.

Why it stays out of a bowl

Bowl grain does not run along the bed. On a faceplate blank the edge meets end grain twice each revolution. Sorby states that the spindle roughing gouge is not designed for bowl-grain projects. Olivers adds that a square bowl blank can break the end-grain corners out and snatch the gouge. That is a catch, not a faster roughing cut. The same refusal covers hollowing. A bowl gouge is a different flute. Matching it to the blank is on the turning chisel buying guide. If the wood is already on a faceplate, put this gouge down.

Sizes you will see

Robert Sorby lists 3/4 in (19 mm) and 1 1/4 in (32 mm). Henry Taylor lists 3/4 in, 1 in, and 1 1/2 in. Olivers calls 3/4 in the common size, with shop prices of about £45 to £95, which is not an amazon.co.uk price. Treat about 3/4 in (19 mm) as a rule of thumb. A 1 1/8 in (28 mm) head sits near Sorby’s 1 1/4 in. A 2 in title sits outside Henry Taylor’s span. Check the flute and the handle after the inches. Grinding HSS or rotating a carbide insert is on HSS or carbide turning chisels.

Listings that use this name

The FindBuyTool listing, ASIN B0FZKH72DC, matches the profile: a 28 mm head, a 21 mm flute, 350 mm overall, M2 claimed, about £45.99, and no reviews. With no reviews you are buying the stated size, so inspect the ferrule before a large square blank. The DEEFIINE listing, ASIN B0D9T6G9ZM, says 2 in HSS roughing gouge, at about £42.73, with 4.1 from 206 ratings. That width sits outside the maker band, the wording mixes HSS and carbide, and reviewers report loose ferrules. ASIN B01LXW5ELP includes a tool labelled 25 mm gouge, so do not treat every wide gouge in a set as this tool.

Common questions

What is a spindle roughing gouge for?
It rounds spindle blanks held between centres, especially square or uneven stock, with a slicing cut and the wings kept back. Sorby, Henry Taylor and Olivers all describe that job. You use it on a chair leg while the blank is still square. You put it down for a bowl, a hollow form, or a faceplate blank.
Can I use a spindle roughing gouge on a bowl?
No. Sorby states it is not designed for bowl-grain projects. Olivers warns that a square bowl blank can break the end-grain corners out and snatch the tool. The same limit covers faceplate work and hollowing. If the grain does not run along the bed, leave this gouge in the rack.
What size spindle roughing gouge do UK makers sell?
Sorby lists 3/4 in (19 mm) and 1 1/4 in (32 mm). Henry Taylor lists 3/4 in, 1 in and 1 1/2 in. Olivers calls 3/4 in the common size, at about £45 to £95 on the shop page, which is not an amazon.co.uk price. Check the flute and the handle as well as the inches.
How is a roughing gouge different from a bowl gouge?
A roughing gouge is a wide flute for rounding spindles between centres. A bowl gouge is ground for bowl grain, including end grain on a faceplate. They are not two names for one chisel.
Should I take the corners off before the first cut?
Yes, when the blank is still square between centres. WIS28 treats leftover corners and a blunt tool as reasons a blank can be ejected. It does not name the roughing gouge. Ease the arrises and keep the first passes light.
Which listing here is actually a spindle roughing gouge?
The FindBuyTool listing, ASIN B0FZKH72DC, matches: a 28 mm head, a 21 mm flute, 350 mm overall, M2 claimed, about £45.99, and no reviews. ASIN B0D9T6G9ZM uses a 2 in title at about £42.73, with 4.1 from 206 ratings, loose-ferrule comments and mixed HSS and carbide wording. ASIN B01LXW5ELP is labelled only as a 25 mm gouge inside a set.
What should I use inside a bowl instead?
Use a bowl gouge, not this flute. In this comparison that is a different listing, ground for bowl grain. A carbide insert is a third route: it scrapes, and you rotate the insert instead of grinding a bevel.
