How to use a woodturning gouge

Updated: 24 October 2026

You are at the lathe for a first cut, or the gouge keeps catching. How to use a woodturning gouge is a sequence: the rest holds the steel, the bevel meets the wood, and only then does the edge take a shaving. A blank can leave an unguarded hand lathe when that support, the mounting, the speed or the edge is wrong, which is the ejection list in HSE woodturning sheet WIS28. Which tool to buy sits on the [turning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/turning-chisel). Peter F. used WIS28 and UK workshop guidance, not a lab test. Set the rest before the wood turns

Set the tool rest with the lathe off and the blank still. WIS28 wants the rest close enough to hold the chisel steady, and far enough back that the parallel section stays on the rest while the edge meets the wood on the centre line. If only the last centimetre of the blade reaches the blank, the tool can pivot. Lock the banjo and turn the blank by hand before you start. A square blank of about 40 mm still has corners. WIS28 lists leftover corners among the reasons a piece can be thrown, so take them off with the lathe stopped.

A supported cut with a gouge

A supported cut puts the bevel on the wood before the edge slices. Olivers Woodturning sets a bowl gouge with the flute toward the shoulder and the handle low. Raise the handle only until curly shavings appear, then drop it to leave the cut. A spindle roughing gouge stays on square stock between centres, which is the spindle roughing gouge page. A carbide bar scrapes at about 90 degrees, bar level, on the same locked rest. If the bar digs, you are below centre. That trade-off is on HSS or carbide turning chisels.

When the edge still grabs

A catch is a bite the bevel cannot support. A flute facing up while the handle rises drives the edge in. A distant rest lets the tool pivot, a blunt edge makes you push, and corners still on the blank strike once a revolution. WIS28 gives no single rpm. Use the speed your maker publishes for that diameter, and leave the motor off if there is no figure. If the tool is pulled from your hands, switch off and check the gap, the flute and the edge. The first kit is on the turning chisel buying guide.

Dust, eyes, and when to fetch a tutor

HSE workplace exposure limits for wood dust are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and 5 mg/m³ for softwood, and a mixture uses 3 mg/m³. Those are shift averages, so they are a warning in a home workshop too. Clear sanding dust with extraction or a damp pickup. Compressed air and a dry sweep throw it back into the air. Wear a face shield while the blank turns and a mask while you sand. Keep abrasive off your fingers while the spindle runs, because WIS28 records contact injuries during sanding. Fetch a tutor if the lathe is at work, if the blank is jointed, after a catch, or if the maker gives no speed for that diameter. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations apply at work. Workshops citing BS 4163:2014 treat a jointed blank as supervised turning.

Common questions

How do I set the tool rest?
Stop the lathe, then move the banjo. Set the rest close enough to steady the chisel, with the parallel section still on the rest and the edge on the centre line. Lock it and turn the blank by hand. WIS28 gives that rule for hand lathes, which are not fully guarded.
What is bevel rubbing, in one sequence?
Anchor the gouge, flute toward the shoulder, handle low, so the bevel meets the wood before the edge bites. Lift the handle until curly shavings appear, then lower it to leave the cut. That is the Olivers Woodturning bowl-gouge sequence. Dust instead of a ribbon means a scrape or a blunt edge. A carbide bar has no bevel to rub.
Why does the gouge catch?
The edge takes a bite the bevel cannot support. A flute facing the ceiling and a raised handle drive it in. A distant rest lets the tool lever. Corners on square stock and a speed above the maker’s figure are on the same WIS28 list. Stop, reset the rest, and sharpen if the edge skates.
How is a carbide bar presented differently?
Hold the bar level and scrape at about 90 degrees on a locked rest. Charnwood’s carbide guidance is that scrape for its own insert tools. Rotate or replace the insert when it dulls. If the bar digs, the edge is off centre. Keep the pass light.
What do I wear, and what about dust?
Wear a face shield while turning and a dust mask while sanding. Hardwood dust is limited at 3 mg/m³ and softwood at 5 mg/m³. A mixture uses 3 mg/m³, as a shift average. Clear dust with extraction or a damp wipe. Do not use compressed air.
When do I stop and ask a tutor?
Stop on a work lathe, because the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations apply. Stop if the blank is jointed. Workshops citing BS 4163:2014 treat that as supervised turning. Stop after a catch that pulled the tool away, or if the maker gives no speed. WIS28 has no universal rpm.
Should I sand while the lathe is running with cloth around my fingers?
Keep cloth and abrasive off your fingers while the spindle turns. WIS28 notes contact injuries during sanding, and anything that wraps can pull a hand in. Stop the lathe, or hold a pad that cannot wind on.
