Woodturning tools for beginners

Updated: 24 October 2026

You have a lathe on the bench, or one due this month, and a search for woodturning tools for beginners makes a boxed set look finished before you have turned a spindle. This page names the first three profiles for work between centres and the one extra tool for bowls. Peter F. used public UK maker lists and amazon.co.uk listings, not a lab test. Shelf prices and the full ASIN table stay on the [turning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/turning-chisel), from a check on 19 October 2026. Tools for spindles between centres

Between centres, with the grain running along the cut, three tools cover a chair leg, a honey dipper or a tool handle. Replies on the UK Workshop thread "New to wood turning" name a roughing gouge to take the square off, a spindle gouge for beads and coves, and a parting tool to size a tenon and part off. Peter Child’s starter list is a 3/4 in (19 mm) roughing gouge, a 3/8 in spindle gouge and a 1/8 in parting tool, with a 3/8 in beading tool instead of a skew. Record Power’s six-piece set, £229.99 on the maker’s page and not an amazon.co.uk price, widens the roughing gouge to 1 in. Leave the skew until the bevel stays down. Grinding high-speed steel or rotating a carbide insert is on HSS or carbide turning chisels.

The one tool bowls add

The extra tool is a bowl gouge, not a second roughing gouge. The cutter meets end grain and side grain in one pass, and the blank usually leaves the drive centre for a chuck or a faceplate. Peter Child and Record Power both list a 3/8 in bowl gouge. A spindle gouge of the same width is for beads along the grain. The chuck is a separate bill. Keep the spindle roughing gouge on square stock between centres. Why it stays out of a bowl is on the spindle roughing gouge page.

A boxed set or three single tools

Judge a box by the profiles it names, not by the piece count. On 19 October 2026 the Toolzone WW058 at about £40.46 named six profiles. The DEEFIINE HSS08 at about £109.98 is eight pieces and does not name them. UK Workshop threads say to skip an unnamed box, and warn that a case-sized set can ship with handles too short to grip. That shelf ran about £32 to £46 for one tool, about £42 to £50 for four carbide pieces, and about £69 to £111 for larger sets. If the title is only a piece count, buy the three spindle profiles on their own. Who the top pick and the best value suit is on best turning chisels.

What the tool price does not include

The figure on the listing is the steel, not the session. Peter Child’s starter page puts a grinder and a face shield next to the gouges, because high-speed steel dulls on a chair leg and a spinning blank throws chips. A carbide insert postpones the grinder. You still pay to rotate or replace the cutter. A face shield stops a chip and does not filter sanding dust. A mask does not stop a chip. When the profiles and the shield are there, a catch is usually the rest, the bevel or the speed.

Common questions

What three tools do I need for spindles?
For work between centres, start with a roughing gouge, a spindle gouge and a parting tool. Peter Child sizes a 3/4 in (19 mm) roughing gouge, a 3/8 in spindle gouge and a 1/8 in parting tool, with a beading tool instead of a skew. Record Power widens the roughing gouge to 1 in.
When do I add a bowl gouge?
Add a 3/8 in bowl gouge when a bowl is the next project, not when the lathe arrives for spindles. Peter Child and Record Power both list that size. You still need a chuck or a faceplate, which the gouge does not include.
Is a boxed set better than three single tools?
A set wins only when it names the profiles you will use this month. On 19 October 2026, Toolzone WW058 at about £40.46 named six profiles. The DEEFIINE HSS08 at about £109.98 did not name its eight. If those three tools are missing, buy them singly.
What size roughing gouge and bowl gouge do UK makers list?
Peter Child lists a 3/4 in roughing gouge and a 3/8 in bowl gouge. Record Power’s set at £229.99 lists a 1 in roughing gouge and a 3/8 in bowl gouge, plus a 3/8 in spindle gouge and a 1/8 in parting tool. A piece count with no sizes is not a specification.
Do I need a skew on day one?
You can wait. A skew catches as soon as the bevel lifts off the wood. Peter Child’s starter set uses a 3/8 in beading tool instead of a skew for the early work. Record Power includes a 3/4 in skew in its six-piece set, so a named kit can contain one before you are ready to use it.
What else must I budget besides the chisels?
Budget a grinder for high-speed steel, a face shield, and a way to deal with sanding dust. A shield does not filter dust, and a dust mask does not stop a chip. Bowls add a chuck or a faceplate on top of the gouge.
Where are the current shelf prices?
They sit on the turning chisel comparison. About £32 to £46 for one tool, £42 to £50 for four carbide pieces, and £69 to £111 for larger sets are the 19 October 2026 bands.
