HSS or carbide woodturning tools

Updated: 24 October 2026

You have two listings open on amazon.co.uk, both called a turning chisel, and you want to know which edge is sharper. That split is the wrong one. HSS or carbide woodturning tools make different cuts: a high-speed steel gouge slices while the bevel rubs, and a carbide tool scrapes with a cutter held near a right angle. Peter F. used UK maker pages and amazon.co.uk listing text read on 22 October 2026. We did not test edges in a lab, and any hardness figure here is the maker’s claim. Shelf prices sit on the [turning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/turning-chisel), where a purchase through our link can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two cuts, not two brands

A carbide insert is not a small gouge. Charnwood presents the TCSET3S cutters at 90 degrees, so they scrape, and calls that easier to steer than a bowl gouge. Round is for coves and bowl interiors, square for flat edges, and triangle for detail. You rotate a dull face, then replace the cutter. The page claims up to 50 times the life of high-speed steel and quotes K10 carbide at 92 HRC, for a set at £69 including VAT. That life and hardness are Charnwood’s claim. Henry Taylor’s Diamic gouges slice with the bevel rubbing: a bowl gouge, a spindle gouge and a spindle roughing gouge. VEVOR listing B0FD522Y3P lists two round cutters at 12 x 2.5 mm, one square at 11 mm, one diamond at 10 x 30 mm, and a T15 key.

A grinder or a spare insert

High-speed steel stays keen only if you restore the bevel, so a grinder belongs with the gouge from the first week. Several UK notes said the edge did not arrive ready. One DEEFIINE review described steel that turned blue, the usual sign of an overheated tip. A Kendal Tools page for a Charnwood M2 set claims 65 HRC and showed £199.06 including VAT. Carbide is renewed by loosening the screw, turning a fresh face, and tightening it. DEEFIINE listing B0CH33MFNS packs spare screws rather than spare cutters, on 18.3 in bars (about 465 mm). A spent tip means another order. The catch usually starts at the rest, on how to use a turning chisel.

When the title and the bullets disagree

Some amazon.co.uk titles say high-speed steel while the bullets describe carbide inserts. That is not a hybrid. If the listing says both, treat the steel as unknown until the tip photo and the spare-parts line agree. B0D9T6G9ZM has an HSS title, carbide bullets, and reviews that mention loose ferrules. B0C1NLHB45 is filed under HSS while a bullet names 4341, and a review says the edge does not hold. Who the top pick and the best value suit is on best turning chisels. A Torx key means a scraper you rotate. A flute and a bevel mean a gouge you grind.

Which edge to buy first

Choose carbide if you will not own a grinder this month and you will sand a scraped surface. Charnwood’s TCSET3S at £69 including VAT is that trade. Choose one or two HSS gouges if you will grind: a bowl gouge for cross-grain work, a spindle gouge between centres. Skip an eight-piece title that never names the flute. The M2 set at £199.06 including VAT is the higher bill. The short HSS kit is on the turning chisel buying guide.

Common questions

What does a carbide tool actually do to the wood?
A carbide woodturning tool scrapes. Charnwood presents the TCSET3S cutters at 90 degrees, so the tip does not ride a bevel. Round, square and diamond cutters share that scrape and differ in the shape they follow. Plan on sanding the face. A hard insert does not turn the tool into a bowl gouge.
What does an HSS gouge do that a scraper does not?
A high-speed steel gouge slices while the bevel rubs, so you get a shaving rather than dust. Henry Taylor’s Diamic range splits that job into a bowl gouge, a spindle gouge and a spindle roughing gouge. A carbide insert at a right angle does not copy that cut.
Do I still need a grinder?
You need a grinder if the edge is high-speed steel, because the bevel wears and several UK notes said it did not arrive sharp. A carbide insert skips that grind: you rotate it, then replace it. Add one HSS gouge and the wheel comes back into the kit.
How do I renew a carbide edge?
Loosen the screw, turn a fresh face of the cutter into the wood, and tighten it. Charnwood’s sequence is rotate first, then replace the cutter. VEVOR listing B0FD522Y3P includes a T15 key. DEEFIINE listing B0CH33MFNS includes spare screws, not spare cutters.
What if the listing says HSS and carbide?
Treat the steel as unknown. A high-speed steel title with carbide bullets is not one edge, and the phrase HSS carbide inserts is not a third alloy. Listings B0D9T6G9ZM and B0C1NLHB45 both show that clash, and reviews of the first mention loose ferrules. Buy only when the title, the tip photo and the spares describe one cut.
Is a square bar part of choosing carbide?
A square bar changes how the tool rolls on the rest. It does not decide whether the edge is carbide or high-speed steel, and it will not turn a scrape into a bevel cut. Read the cutter first.
Should a beginner buy carbide or HSS turning tools?
Buy carbide if you will not have a grinder this month and you will sand a scraped finish. Charnwood’s TCSET3S, at £69 including VAT, is the simpler first cut. Buy one or two HSS gouges if you will grind, and skip an unnamed eight-piece box. If the listing claims both steels, wait.
