Hose clamp buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are at the shed tap with a washing-machine hose that has crept off the spigot, or you are ordering a mixed pack for a water butt. This hose clamp buying guide is the decision before any pack: which mechanism, which millimetre, and which metal. The [hose clamps comparison](/hub/hand-tools/hose-clamps) holds the amazon.co.uk listings, the prices in GBP and the review counts. Peter F. updated this page from those listings on 23 October 2026. There is no lab test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Jubilee, the company in Gillingham, still publishes an all-304 or all-316 range and a 7 mm screw. A title that only says jubilee is the category word, not that clip and not a Kitemark. The same search also returns a T-bolt, a double-ear spring, and a perforated band you cut yourself. If the listing does not say T-bolt or spring, treat it as a worm-drive, then read the diameter before the brand line.

Measure the hose after it is on the fitting

Measure the outside diameter with the hose on the spigot, in millimetres. The bore is the hole. RS and The Hosemaster both say to aim for the middle of the printed range. In this comparison, a review of a 16–25 mm ten-pack says the clip would not close on a pipe already at the 25 mm mark. A proper Jubilee worm-drive starts to engage from about 9.5 mm, so a thinner line is a weak match for a screw clip even when a packet prints 6 mm.

Worm-drive, T-bolt or spring

A worm-drive clip is the ordinary choice for a garden hose, a water butt, a pond pipe or a washing-machine drain. Grip is highest near the housing. On soft silicone, UK hose shops sell a narrower clamp. Choose a T-bolt only after the fitted diameter sits in a short window. That choice is on jubilee clip or T-bolt. A spring clip, closed with pliers, suits a line under about 10 mm. The spring assortment here is 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 mm only. Fuel and coolant limits are on fuel line hose clips.

What stainless is allowed to mean

W1 is zinc-plated mild steel. W4 is 304 throughout. W5 is 316 throughout. Mixed metal, often sold as W2, corrodes faster. A line that only says stainless has not chosen a grade. One 100-piece kit here is titled stainless without 304, and one review reports rust after about 45 minutes in tap water. BS 5315:1991 was withdrawn on 5 March 2024. None of these packs shows a Kitemark. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require a watertight, appropriate fitting. A clip does not approve the hose.

What to buy next, and what to leave

For a water butt, a pond or a drain, buy a worm-drive clip in a stated 304 grade, sized so the fitted diameter sits mid-range. Leave brakes, LPG, a new mains connection, and a boosted pipe you cannot measure. An air-tool hose belongs with the tool maker's tightening advice. The British Compressed Air Society treats a burst air hose as a hazard. If a failed clip means fuel, braking or boost, hand the fitting to someone who does that work.

Common questions

What is the difference between a hose clamp, a hose clip and a jubilee clip?
In UK shops the three names usually mean a worm-drive band with a screw. Jubilee is also a brand in Gillingham, with its own 304 and 316 ranges. A packet that prints jubilee without that brand is using the category word. If the listing says T-bolt or spring, it is a different mechanism, and the diameter window will be shorter or fixed.
Do I measure the bore or the outside of the hose?
Measure the outside diameter after the hose is fully on the spigot. The bore is the hole the water or fuel runs through, and the clip closes around the outside. A tape wrapped around that fitted hose, divided by 3.1416, gives you the diameter if you have no caliper. Then choose a clip whose middle, not its maximum, is close to that figure.
Should the diameter sit at the top of the clip's range?
Put the fitted diameter near the middle of the printed window. A review of a 16–25 mm ten-pack says the clip would not close on a pipe that was already 25 mm. If your measurement is the maximum on the packet, buy the next window up. A clip at the end of its travel has little band left to pull.
When is a worm-drive clip the right mechanism?
Use a worm-drive on firm rubber at low pressure, where the diameter might fall anywhere in a wide window: a garden hose, a water butt, a pond pipe or a washing-machine drain. The screw covers that spread. Soft silicone and a boosted pipe want a narrower T-bolt once you have measured, and a line under about 10 mm is often a spring clip.
Does stainless mean 304, and is 304 the same as marine 316?
Stainless on its own is not a grade. W4 means 304 throughout, and W5 means 316 throughout. W1 is zinc-plated steel. 304 and 316 are both stainless, and 316 is the grade people mean by marine. A title that skips the number has not promised either, and one stainless kit here rusted in a short tap-water soak according to a review.
Is BS 5315 still a current British Standard?
BS 5315:1991 was withdrawn on 5 March 2024. It had covered general-purpose worm-drive clips from 12 mm. Jubilee still refers to it for its own range. A marketplace line that says British Standard is not a Kitemark, and none of the packs in this comparison shows one. A withdrawn publication is not the current standard to specify.
