How to fit and clean a stainless grill grate

Updated: 16 October 2026

The new grate is on the kitchen table, the barbecue is cold, and you need it to sit flat before anyone lights the coals. This is how to fit and clean a stainless grill grate: measure it, seat it, wash it without steel wool, and dry it. The steps are the same for a mesh or a round bar, and they are not a ranking of the eight products in the [stainless steel barbecue grill grate comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/stainless-steel-barbecue-grill-grate). The Products Compared editorial team updated this on 15 October 2026. We did not run a lab cook. Links to amazon.co.uk are affiliate links.

Measure before you order

Measure the cooking grate you are replacing, not the outside rim and not the bowl name. Tape across the centre, outer wire to outer wire, then at 90 degrees. If it has warped, keep both figures. If it is gone, measure the inner ledge. Do this on a cold barbecue, and measure the new grate the same way before you force it. Weber UK part 8413 for a 47 cm kettle is 44.5 cm and plated, not a 47 cm disc. The 57 cm split is on the Weber kettle cooking grate size page. The order of decisions is on the stainless steel BBQ grate buying guide.

Seat the new grate cold

Set the grate on the ledge with the barbecue unlit. It should sit stable, without rocking, and without you standing on it. A round grate that is a few millimetres large will catch on the rim. A mesh that is short will fall through or tip. If one edge lifts, it is not seated. Do not bend a bar grate to make it fit, and do not cut bars down. A bent arrival is a different problem. MMLFX reviewers say sheets arrived bent, so food rolls to the middle. That is a reason to reject the piece. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a 30-day short-term right to reject goods that are not as described. This is not legal advice. Photograph the bend and start the return while the window is open. None of the meshes in this comparison is described as hinged. If your kettle needs that hinge, you are in the wrong product.

Clean and dry stainless

Wash a stainless grate by hand. Warm water and a mild soap, or a mild non-scratching cream, then a rinse and a dry, is the method the British Stainless Steel Association describes. Napoleon UK says its own cooking grids are not dishwasher safe, and several listings here leave that question unanswered, so do not assume a yes. Skip carbon-steel wool and bleach. Steel wool leaves iron that then rusts, so brown spots after a wire-wool scrub are not proof that a 304 claim was false. Heat tint, often a straw or blue cast, is not the same thing as rust. Dry the grate before you put it away. Why 304 still marks is on the 304 or 430 stainless grill grate page. Cast-iron seasoning oil is the wrong routine for this metal.

When to stop

Stop and get help when the problem is no longer the grate. A gas leak or a burner that will not shut down is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer, not a new mesh. Carbon monoxide symptoms, such as headache and nausea in an enclosed space, mean fresh air and medical help. The London Fire Brigade leaflet from April 2024 says not to barbecue indoors or on a balcony, and not to bring the barbecue inside to finish cooling. A stainless cooking grate does not make charcoal safe in a flat, a tent or a closed gazebo. If the grate rocks because the bowl is cracked or the ledge has rusted away, a new grid will not repair the barbecue. The grate is the part food touches. It is not the whole cooker.

Common questions

What if the old grate is already in the bin?
Measure the inner ledge the grate used to sit on, with the barbecue cold. Do not measure the outside rim, and do not order the bowl's advertised size. If the ledge has rusted away, a new grate will not have anything true to sit on. When the replacement arrives, measure that disc the same way before you try to seat it.
Can I put a stainless grate in the dishwasher?
Do not assume so. Napoleon UK says its own cooking grids are not dishwasher safe. Several listings here ask the question and leave it unanswered. Hand wash, rinse and dry. You have no listing promise that the welds will tolerate a dishwasher tablet.
What should I avoid when brown spots appear?
Avoid steel wool, wire brushes that shed bristles, and bleach or other chloride cleaners. Brown spotting after a carbon-steel scrub is often iron left on the surface, which then rusts, even when the grade underneath is stainless. Wash with mild soap or a non-scratching cream, rinse and dry. Do not treat that stain as proof the seller invented the grade. Seasoning routines meant for cast iron are the wrong next step on stainless.
Is heat tint the same as rust?
No. Heat tint is a colour left by high temperature, often a pale straw or blue cast. Rust from iron contamination is brown spotting after ordinary steel wool. They can show up on the same grate, and they are not one fault. Soap and a dry do not certify the grade.
What do I do if it arrives bent?
Photograph it, measure it, and reject it if it is not as described, within the 30-day short-term right in section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. That is not legal advice. MMLFX reviewers say sheets arrived bent and food rolled to the middle. Do not hammer the mesh flat and then hope the wires hold a joint.
