304 or 430 stainless grill grate

Updated: 16 October 2026

If your barbecue stays in a damp UK garden, the choice between a 304 or 430 stainless grill grate is mainly about corrosion resistance, price and how carefully you will store it. Choose 304 when the grate will face rain, condensation or long periods under a cover. Choose 430 when lower cost matters more and you can keep the grate clean and dry. Neither grade is rust-proof, and a magnet cannot certify which one you have. Check the dimensions and product claims in the [stainless steel barbecue grill grate comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/stainless-steel-barbecue-grill-grate) before you compare grades. What 304 and 430 stainless steel contain

The practical difference starts with nickel. According to thyssenkrupp Materials UK, 304 stainless typically contains about 8–10.5% nickel, whereas 430 contains none. That nickel helps corrosion resistance and adds cost. The British Stainless Steel Association places 316 above 304, and 304 above 430, as a materials order, not an outdoor test of any grate in this set. For a grate stored in a dry shed, 430 can be a reasonable saving. For one left under a cover through a wet winter, 304 gives more tolerance when moisture reaches the metal. The trade-off is more resistance before poor storage shows, not a flawless surface.

Rain, salt and what rust-resistant means

Choose 304 when rain or condensation regularly reaches the barbecue and you cannot bring the grate indoors after every cook. A 430 grate can still serve, but it asks more of the drying routine. Trapped water, food residue and salt make staining more likely on either grade. Even 304 can show marks that look like rust. The British Stainless Steel Association warns that ordinary steel wool leaves iron particles which then corrode, so the stain can sit on the surface rather than in the steel. The wash and dry routine is in the guide to fitting and cleaning a stainless steel barbecue grill grate.

What a magnet can and cannot tell you

A strong magnetic pull is a clue, not a grade certificate. Grade 430 is ferritic and normally magnetic, so a magnet that sticks firmly is consistent with 430. The reverse shortcut does not work reliably. 304 is generally austenitic, but thyssenkrupp Materials UK notes that cold working can make 304 magnetic. Mesh that has been drawn, formed or welded may attract a magnet even if it was sold as 304. A review that calls a 304 mesh magnetic may be accurate, and it still does not prove the seller supplied 430. A home magnet test cannot reveal exact nickel content. If the grade affects your purchase, ask for a material specification. Check whether 304 appears in the technical details, the bullets or only in the title. The stainless steel barbecue grill grate buying guide weighs that evidence alongside dimensions and construction.

What the compared listings actually state

The clearest 304 claims in this set appear in the bullets for Rovelin, AMJKEJI and LegendTech. Three MMLFX meshes put 304 in the title while the specification says stainless steel. A specification line is easier to evaluate than a title, and neither is a laboratory certificate. The 40 cm and 45 cm rounds say stainless steel without stating 304 or 430. Do not upgrade them because the photo looks bright. If the grade is absent, treat the corrosion performance as unknown. Food-contact rules do not turn suitable for cooking into a 304 certificate. They concern whether the finished material transfers unsafe substances or changes the food. They do not require every barbecue grate to use grade 304, so 430 is not automatically disqualified because it contains no nickel. The sensible default is 304 when the grate lives outdoors, 430 when you accept more maintenance for a lower price, and neither when the seller will not document the grade.

Common questions

Does a 304 grill grate rust?
It can stain or show surface rust, particularly after salt exposure, prolonged damp storage or contamination with ordinary steel wool. Grade 304 generally resists corrosion better than 430, but stainless does not mean maintenance-free. Clean off food and salt, avoid carbon-steel tools and dry the grate before covering or storing it.
Why does 304 stainless steel cost more than 430?
Grade 304 typically contains about 8–10.5% nickel, while 430 contains none. Nickel supports the material properties that give 304 stronger general corrosion resistance, and it adds cost. You are usually paying for more tolerance of wet outdoor conditions, not a guarantee that the grate can be neglected.
Is a magnetic barbecue grate still genuine 304?
Possibly. Grade 430 is normally magnetic, but cold working can make 304 attract a magnet too. Wire drawing, forming and welding can affect the result, so a magnet is useful only as a clue. Ask for the material specification if the exact grade matters.
Is 430 stainless steel safe for a cooking grate?
The grade number alone does not decide food-contact suitability. Food-contact rules concern whether the finished material transfers unsafe substances or changes the food, rather than requiring 304 in every product. Buy a grate intended for cooking from a credible seller and follow its care instructions.
Should I choose 316 instead of 304 near the coast?
Consider 316 if the grate will face regular salt-laden air and you want a step up in corrosion resistance. The British Stainless Steel Association's general order places 316 above 304 and 430. None of the products in this comparison states 316, so look for a specialist grate with the grade explicitly documented.
What should I do if only the product title says 304?
Check the technical details, bullet points and seller answers for the same claim. A title-only statement is weaker evidence because titles can be inconsistent or optimised for search. If the seller cannot confirm the material and outdoor durability matters, choose a listing with a clearer specification.
