Stainless steel BBQ grate buying guide

Updated: 16 October 2026

You are replacing a rusted grid, or adding a mesh, and the listing may be the charcoal grate, a 15 cm trivet, or the bowl size rather than the disc food sits on. This stainless steel BBQ grate buying guide keeps the decisions in order: measure the cooking grate, separate it from the fuel grate, then read the grade and the bar size before you compare prices. The [stainless steel barbecue grill grate comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/stainless-steel-barbecue-grill-grate) lists eight amazon.co.uk products from £4.99 to £14.48. The Products Compared editorial team updated this on 15 October 2026. We did not cook on the grates in a lab. Links to amazon.co.uk are affiliate links.

Measure the grate you have

Start with the cooking grate you already own, not the number on the bowl. Lay a tape across the centre, outer wire to outer wire, then again at 90 degrees. A warped grate gives two numbers, and the replacement has to suit the opening you have. If the old grate is gone, measure the inner ledge, not the outside rim. Ordering the rim is how a disc arrives that will not drop in. Weber UK lists part 8413 as a 44.5 cm plated grate for 47 cm charcoal barbecues, at £29.99 including VAT. The bowl name is not the disc. Part numbers and the 57 cm case are on the Weber kettle cooking grate size page. Measure the new grate cold, both ways, before you light anything.

Cooking grate, mesh, or small round

Food sits on the cooking grate. The charcoal grate sits lower and holds the fuel. Weber's kettle manual draws them as separate parts. The Rovelin is a 30 cm round that states 304 and 600 g, at £10.39, with no reviews. The 40 cm and 45 cm rounds say stainless steel, give no grade, and share one review block. The MMLFX sheets are £5.59, £5.99 and £7.29, with 304 only in the title and a printed weight of 1 g. The 15 cm and 19 cm nets are small rounds. Skip the £5.59 sheet if you need bars that stay flat. For a measured rectangle it is the best value in this set, not a kettle grate.

Grade and bar thickness

Read the grade on the specification table, not only in the title. Rovelin, AMJKEJI and LegendTech state 304 in the bullets. The MMLFX titles say 304 while the material field says stainless steel. The 40 cm and 45 cm rounds do not number a grade. A magnet that sticks does not, by itself, prove the seller lied. Nickel and that limit are on the 304 or 430 stainless grill grate page. None of the eight listings gives a bar diameter. UK makers treat about 3 mm as the usual cooking bar and about 6 mm when the fire is wood or the grid should be stiffer. If the listing is silent, use the reviews and a credible weight, not the photo.

What the GBP bands buy

Under about £15 this set is thin mesh or a small round: a size and a photo, which can suit a measured fire-pit patch and is a poor swap for a kettle grid left outside all summer. Weber's plated part 8413 is £29.99 and is not stainless. Stainless hinged part 7437 sat around £50 to £70 and does not measure 57 cm across. UK-made 304 bar on barbecue-smoker-recipes.com runs about £109 to £329. If the grate is not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a 30-day short-term right to reject. That is not legal advice. Washing and a bent sheet are on the how to fit and clean a stainless grill grate page. The London Fire Brigade leaflet from April 2024 says not to barbecue indoors or on a balcony.

Common questions

Is a title that says 304 enough?
A grade in the title is weaker than the same grade on the specification table, and neither is a lab certificate. In this set, three meshes say 304 in the title while the material field only says stainless steel. Rovelin, AMJKEJI and LegendTech state 304 in the bullets. For a wet garden, prefer a specification line that says 304, then dry the grid after you wash it.
What bar thickness do UK makers actually sell?
None of the eight amazon.co.uk listings here states a bar diameter. UK makers such as BBQMad and barbecue-smoker-recipes.com treat about 3 mm as the usual cooking bar and about 6 mm when the fire is wood or the grid should be stiffer. If your listing is silent, use reviews and a credible weight, not the photo.
Will a 30 cm round replace a full-size kettle grid?
No. The Rovelin grate is 30 × 30 × 1 cm, listed at 600 g with 304 in the bullets, at £10.39, and it has no reviews. A 47 cm Weber takes about 44.5 cm of cooking grate, and a 57 cm kettle takes about 54.5 cm. Measure your ledge. Do not order 30 cm because it was the cheapest round that mentioned 304.
Why do three mesh sizes share one review text?
The three MMLFX sizes show the same review texts and the same 4.1 from 28 ratings. Count that block once. The 40 cm and 45 cm rounds share a separate block, including one review about batteries. Shared text can warn you about thin wire. It cannot prove your exact size was reviewed.
What can I send back if the size is wrong?
If the grate is not as described, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives a short-term right to reject for 30 days. That is the statute, not a personal legal opinion, and it assumes the listing was wrong rather than the measurement. A sheet that arrives bent, which MMLFX reviewers report, is a return, not a repair. Measure on arrival, while the barbecue is cold.
