Waterproof BBQ cover or a breathable one

Updated: 23 October 2026

You lift the cloth after a wet week and the grill is either full of rain or rusty under a cover that looked dry. A waterproof BBQ cover is the phrase on all nine amazon.co.uk listings in our [Grill case comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/grill-case), and none of those listings names an air vent. This page separates a seam that lets rain in from damp that the cloth holds against the metal, and it says when to stay with a sealed cover. We used those listings, review comments and public UK sources, with no lab test and no hydrostatic figure. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two ways a covered grill gets wet

Rain that gets in and moisture that cannot get out are different failures. A seam leak is water that finds a stitch line, a hem that sits in a puddle, or a gap where the cover misses a shelf. Condensation is water that warm metal and a cool cloth make inside a cover that did not leak. Reviews on the same ASINs split. AZOMKER is described as like a sieve in one comment, and other comments say the rain stayed out. None of these nine states taped seams. The centimetres belong on the BBQ cover size guide.

What waterproof means on these listings

Every one of the nine bullets says waterproof. None states a hydrostatic head, an IP rating, or a laboratory that stood the cloth in a column of water. The Advertising Standards Authority's CAP Code, section 3, expects objective claims to be backed and not exaggerated. That is a rule about the word, not a ruling on any one of these ASINs. Waterproof on the page is the seller's sentence. The coatings that are named differ. AZOMKER and ASHATA state a PU coating. Kauytt states a PVC lining. LEUOSO's material field says polyvinyl chloride. Yimomoyi says waterproof coatings on 420D fabric. Denier is the weight of the yarn. It does not prove that water stays out, and 420D is not a vent. A higher price inside this set, from about £7.10 to £20.68, does not add taped seams. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, treats that description as part of satisfactory quality.

No vent in this set

None of the nine listings names an air vent. Breathable, in the sense of a planned opening or a fabric that lets vapour out, is not a box you can tick here. You can use a sealed cover and air the grill, or you can leave this set for a cover that states a vent. Calor's Outback cover is the contrast. Calor describes a waterproof PVC-coated canvas, then warns that moisture is trapped and rust follows, which is why that cover has a side vent. A vented dealer cover is the better tool when the last grill rusted under a cover that did not leak. The General Product Safety Regulations 2005 are the safety baseline for a consumer cover. They are not a waterproof standard. The cylinder is a separate rule, on the gas BBQ cover page.

What to do this week

On the next dry day, take the cover off, open the hood, and let the firebox air before the cloth goes back. If the bars are wet from last night's cook, dry them in the open first. A hem that sits in a puddle wicks up the skirt, so close the cord above the wet patch. A grill that is damp with no hole will not gain a vent from another cover in this set. How the hem closes is on the how to fit a BBQ cover page.

Common questions

Does waterproof mean rain cannot get in?
Not by itself. All nine listings say waterproof, and none shows a hydrostatic head or an IP rating. Reviews on the same ASINs split: some say rain stayed out, and others describe a sieve, a barbecue full of water, or a leak in heavy rain. A coating can shed a shower and still fail at an untaped seam.
Why is the grill wet when the cover has no hole?
Because a sealed cover holds moisture even when rain does not enter. Calor warns that a waterproof barrier traps damp and that rust follows, which is why their Outback cover has a vent. Condensation on a cool morning is not the same fault as a seam leak. If the cloth has no hole, airing is the fix. Another coated rectangle from this set still has no vent.
Do any covers in this set have vents?
No. None of the nine names an air vent, and none states taped seams. Breathable is not a feature you can tick on these amazon.co.uk listings. Calor's Outback cover, a different product, adds a side vent and still tells you to take the cover off to dry the grill. If you need that opening, you are looking outside this set.
Will a PU or PVC lining stop condensation?
It is there to shed rain, not to let vapour out. AZOMKER and ASHATA state PU. Kauytt states a PVC lining. LEUOSO's material field says polyvinyl chloride. Yimomoyi says waterproof coatings on 420D. A lining can keep a shower off the steel and still trap the damp the metal gives off overnight. The coating is the wet-weather side of the trade-off. It does not replace lifting the cover when the day is dry.
Should I take the cover off on a dry day?
Yes, if you want the inside of the grill to dry. These covers have no vent. Calor, even with a vent on the Outback cover, says to remove the cover so the barbecue can dry. Open the hood and air the firebox, then put the cloth back before the next rain. Leaving a sealed cover on through a dry spell holds yesterday's moisture against the bars.
