Grease bucket or bucket barbecue: which grill bucket to buy

Updated: 23 October 2026

The drip pot under a pellet grill has split, or you want a small charcoal pail for a garden supper, and amazon.co.uk has returned both under grill bucket. A grease bucket catches fat. A bucket barbecue is the grill you light. Name the job, then the centimetres and the lid line, before you trust a star rating. The [grill bucket comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/grill-bucket) ranks eight listings once you know which row is yours. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf figures from 20 October 2026. We did not lab-test these pails.

Which grill bucket you are actually buying

A grill bucket does one of three jobs, and they do not share a winner. Cooking means an open charcoal pail with a grate. Catching means a metal pot under a pellet grill or smoker. Quenching leftover coals is a lidded ash kit, and it is not a dearer version of the other two. A fish basket, a liner sold alone, and a pellet tub fall outside this set. HOMION PHM1034 is about £14.15 and about 30 cm across, lid not stated. PREMZO PPM0560 is about £14.85 and about 5 kg, lid not stated. Oklahoma Joe's 9518545P06 is about £12.47, a 2-quart pail that states no lid, at 4.6 from 2,641 reviews that mix countries. The Mifoci ash kit is about £55.93, with a locking lid claimed and no reviews on the extract. If you cannot name the job, do not sort by price. The grease bucket or charcoal bucket page sets the open pail against a lidded kettle.

Fit and size before price

Measure the spout rather than the stars. A side spout needs a bucket the tube can reach. A bottom outlet drops into a keg, and an adapter is a separate part if the diameters miss. Pit Boss UK states its replacement at 12.7 cm tall by 12.7 cm across, liners not included. A cup near 7.5 cm is a different object. BCOATH is about 3 inches across, about £5.97, and UK reviewers called it tiny. Under £10 you might be buying that cup, or a 12.7 cm Pit Boss part listed around £4.50–£7.49. Fits most grills is not a dimension. Waltboar's TR1400ML excludes Timberline. Traeger's Timberline guide describes a grease pan, not the HDW152 bucket some shops list beside other models. Spout detail sits on the pellet grill grease bucket page. These two charcoal buckets are about 30 cm across. B&Q has sold the Sommen at 26.5 cm. Up to four people on a tile is a marketing line.

Lid, liners, and a first charcoal grill

Read the lid line as written. Oklahoma Joe's states no lid. Foppla, about £15.65 and 5.0 from 16 reviews, and Waltboar include 15 foil liners and no lid. LuLobtg, about £12.99, states a lid and 12 liners, but only 500 ml, so the lid does not make it a 2-quart smoker pail. A lid keeps pets and rain off cold fat. These listings do not show that a lid will smother coals. Skip liners on day one if you will scrape the pot cold. Fifteen liners do not repair a bad spout. Cooled fat goes in the bin. Thames Water warns that fats, oils and grease block drains even after they cool. An open charcoal bucket near £14–£15 gives up the lid you get on a neighbouring kettle at £70.41. GOV.UK says light charcoal outdoors only. Lighting steps are on the how to use a grill bucket page.

What to check on the listing

Name the job, then a measurement: 12.7 cm for a Pit Boss-style grease bucket, or about 30 cm for these charcoal grates. Set aside fits most grills until the model guide agrees. Leave a blank lid line as a blank. Note liners beside capacity, because 15 liners on a full-size pail are not 12 liners in 500 ml. Under £10 can be the 7.5 cm cup or a proper small replacement. About £12–£18 holds the full-size grease buckets and the two charcoal grills here. About £55.93 is the ash kit. Stars on the wrong object are not a saving.

Common questions

Is a grill bucket the barbecue or the pot under it?
It can be either. A bucket barbecue is a small charcoal grill you cook on. A grease bucket hangs under a pellet grill and catches fat. An ash bucket with a locking lid is for leftover coals. The prices overlap and the jobs do not.
What diameter is a normal pellet grease bucket?
Pit Boss UK states 12.7 cm tall by 12.7 cm across, without liners. That is not a universal fit. The BCOATH cup is about 7.5 cm. Timberline grills are a separate case: Traeger's guide describes a grease pan.
Is a 30 cm charcoal bucket enough for four people?
Treat up to four as a tile claim. The charcoal buckets here are about 30 cm across, and B&Q's Sommen is 26.5 cm. That is a small cook, not a kettle-sized meal for four.
Do I need liners on day one?
Not if the bucket matches the spout and you will scrape it when it is cold. Pit Boss does not include liners with the 12.7 cm replacement. Foppla and Waltboar include 15 foil liners. LuLobtg's 12 liners sit in only 500 ml, so they do not add room.
What if the listing says most grills?
Treat the phrase as incomplete. Waltboar excludes Timberline, and Traeger's Timberline page describes a pan. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods should match the description, which is a weak backup for measuring first.
When is £55 for an ash bucket a different purchase?
When you are quenching leftover coals rather than cooking or catching fat. The Mifoci kit is about £55.93, claims a locking lid, and had no reviews on the extract. The lid claim is not a tested extinguisher, and it is not an upgrade of a 30 cm cooking pail.
