How to use a goulash cannon

Updated: 23 October 2026

Someone is about to slide the oven under the gazebo because the wind has picked up. How to use a goulash cannon starts with where it stands, then what you light, then how you leave it until the fire is cold. Peter F. edits DIY and tools at Products Compared. Written on 20 October 2026 from UK fire guidance and one field-kitchen manual, not a lab cook. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Where it can stand

Put it outdoors, on a level, non-combustible base, in open air. vidaXL’s warning is the short version: do not use it indoors, and keep children and pets away. Do not light it in a tent, under a gazebo you are sitting in, or on a balcony. Do not tuck it against a shed, a fence, or dry grass. The Skandika field-kitchen manual, which applies to that model only, says at least 1 metre from awnings and wooden decking. Use that metre as a minimum habit even when your own page is silent. Check the screws before the first fire if you assembled it yourself. Assembly is stated on B0HDR1K7XY and on the vidaXL shop page. The other kept listings do not say. If the base rocks, stop.

Fuel and the first light

Burn only the fuel the seller named. B0HDR1K7XY says wood, charcoal or coal. B0D83KL7FY says charcoal and wood. The other six listings name no fuel. If yours is silent, ask the seller or do not light it. Light solid fuel with a barbecue firelighter. BS EN 1860-3:2023 covers those firelighters, not a certificate for the cannon. Fire England says no petrol and no paraffin. The Skandika manual says never petrol or alcohol. Keep water or sand nearby before you strike a match. The damper, if you have one, is an air flap: open it to catch, then ease it. The 1.2 kg charcoal cap in the Skandika booklet is that model’s limit. Do not copy it onto a silent listing.

While it is lit

Leave the oven where you lit it. Do not carry a lit cannon across the lawn. Wear gloves. Steam from a lifted lid burns as readily as the firebox, so tilt the lid away from your forearm. The chimney should take smoke up, and wind will still push a plume sideways. A chimney does not remove carbon monoxide. If the pot boils over, lift the lid and ease the damper rather than throwing liquid onto the coals. Food in the pot is not a way to extinguish the firebox. Use a perforated pan only when the listing includes one. In this set, only B0HDR1K7XY names an 8 litre pan.

Ash, and if someone feels unwell

The fire is finished when it is cold, not when the stew is served. Fire England says keep water or sand nearby and put cold ash on bare soil, not into a wheelie bin. The Skandika manual says not to extinguish that model’s coals with water. Follow the manual that came with your oven. If you have none, do not soak a hot enamelled body. Move ash only once it is cold. A headache or dizziness near a doorway is a medical problem: NHS guidance is fresh air, then 111 or 999 as the symptoms demand. Which tool you bought is on the goulash cannon vs charcoal barbecue page. It does not change this shutdown.

Common questions

Can I light it under a gazebo or in a tent?
No. Fire England says not indoors, not in a tent, and not on a balcony. A gazebo you are sheltering under is the same problem: smoke and carbon monoxide with nowhere to go. The Skandika manual wants at least 1 metre from awnings and wooden decking on that model. Open air, level ground, and a clear gap to sheds and dry grass come before any recipe.
Wood, charcoal, or both?
Use the fuel printed on your listing. B0HDR1K7XY says wood, charcoal or coal. B0D83KL7FY says charcoal and wood. If your page names neither, do not borrow those lines. Coal is not a default, and scrap wood is not wood in the sense those bullets mean.
What firelighter is acceptable?
A firelighter sold for barbecue solid fuel, in the scope of BS EN 1860-3. The Skandika manual points at EN 1860-3 and forbids petrol and alcohol. Fire England forbids petrol and paraffin. The standard is about the lighter, not a badge that the cannon itself is certified.
Can I throw water on the coals?
Not as a universal rule. Skandika tells you not to douse that model’s coals with water. Fire England’s barbecue advice expects water or sand to be on hand to fight a spread. If your oven came with a manual, follow that manual. If it did not, let the fire burn down and keep water for the surroundings, not for a thermal shock to the pot.
When is the ash safe to tip out?
When it is cold, with no glow left. Fire England says cold ash goes on bare soil, not into a wheelie bin. Tipping warm ash against a fence is how a quiet garden fire starts after you have gone inside. Gloves still help, because metal stays hot after the coals look grey.
What if I feel dizzy?
Move into fresh air straight away. NHS carbon monoxide guidance is to get out and to seek help through 111 or 999 depending on how ill someone is. Do not go back into a shed, tent, or smoky kitchen to fetch the pot. The chimney did not make that exposure safe.
