Goulash cannon for a crowd

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have one pot and a garden full of people. A goulash cannon for a crowd is still one batch. This page shows what a stated 14 litre pot can mean, and when that meal becomes a food business. Peter F. edits DIY and tools at Products Compared. The notes come from GOV.UK, the Food Standards Agency register, and a council page, read on 20 October 2026. We did not weigh a finished stew. A qualifying Amazon purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Which listing to buy stays on the [goulash cannon comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/goulash-cannon). Use 14.3 litres only where a page states it.

One pot, one batch

A stated 14.3 litre pot is the worked example, not a guest list. vidaXL and B0HDR1K7XY both print 14.3 litres and an 8 litre second pan. Leave room at the rim, because a full pot boils over when you stir. That 8 litre pan is a perforated extra, not another 8 litres of goulash. The other seven amazon listings do not state litres, so they do not get a headcount. A rule of thumb is about 0.75 to 1 litre of liquid per person after you leave spare room. It is not a portion law. On a 14 litre pot you are in the low teens of bowlfuls, not a measured feeds 20. If the stew is thick, plan a second batch.

A private party

A birthday in your own garden, for people you have invited, is not automatically a food business. You do not register merely because you own a large pot. You still cook outdoors and cool leftovers promptly. Do not leave the pot overnight and reheat it because the cannon is basically a catering urn. The Skandika field-kitchen manual says that model is for private use, not commercial use. Registration is still the GOV.UK question, not a sentence in a booklet. The moment money, tickets, or a stall enter the afternoon, stop guessing.

When you are a food business

GOV.UK’s food business registration is the line. You register at least 28 days before you start trading, on the Food Standards Agency register. A mobile stall or gazebo kitchen is registered at the address where it is stored overnight, not at the fete field. You need raw food kept away from ready-to-eat food, and hot and cold water for washing. Giving food away can still put you in scope. Hounslow’s stall guidance says that, and it says registration is not a street-trading licence. Tower Hamlets notes that some occasional village-fair handling may be exempt, and it tells you to ask the council. Phone the authority for the overnight address and the one for the field if they differ.

Hot food, and listings with no litres

If you are holding food for other people, Hounslow’s pair is hot food at or above 63°C and chilled food at or below 8°C. A goulash cannon is not a fridge and not a proven hot-hold cabinet. None of the eight kept amazon listings states a thermometer. Raw meat stays apart from the ladle you serve with. If you cannot keep those controls, cook for your own guests. Seven of the eight pages never state a capacity. You cannot invent a headcount for LXYZWRW, CFODOJ, either LLEZKBR listing, or the titles near £400. A 1 kg weight does not hide a 14 litre pot. Demand a litre line on the goulash cannon buying guide before you promise a fete.

Common questions

How many people does 14 litres feed?
There is no tested yield for these ASINs. A rule of thumb from kettle practice is about 0.75 to 1 litre of liquid per person, after you leave spare room at the rim. That might land in the low teens of servings from a stated 14 litre pot. It is not a measurement, and it is not a promise that the pot feeds twenty.
Should I fill the pot to the rim?
No. You need space to stir, or the stew climbs the lid and the bottom catches. Leave a clear margin under the rim and plan a second batch if the guest list is longer than that margin allows. The printed litre figure is the vessel, not the amount you can safely boil.
Is a garden birthday a food business?
Feeding people you have invited, without payment, is ordinarily your own meal, and you do not register just for owning the oven. You still keep the fire outdoors and you still cool food properly. If you take money, sell tickets, or set up as a stall, read the registration rules before you assume the birthday exemption still applies.
Where do I register a stall?
On the Food Standards Agency register, at least 28 days before you trade. GOV.UK says a mobile setup is registered to the address where it is stored overnight. That is separate from a street-trading licence, which Hounslow points out. If the field is in another council area, ask both.
What temperature should hot stew stay at?
If you are holding hot food for service, Hounslow’s stall guidance says at or above 63°C. Chilled food should be at or below 8°C. The cannon will not hold those figures for you. It has no stated thermostat on the amazon listings in this set. Check the food, and do not use the pot as a fridge.
What if the listing does not state litres?
Do not invent a number of guests. Only vidaXL and B0HDR1K7XY state 14.3 litres in the sources for this page. A title with a chimney and no capacity is not a 14 litre cannon by photograph. Refuse a headcount until the seller prints litres.
