How to light a Campingaz Party Grill

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have the stove on the grass or the patio, the cartridge or cylinder is in the bag, and the first job is a clean light. How to light a Campingaz Party Grill depends on whether you have a piezo cartridge stove, a piezo cylinder stove with a separate regulator, electronic ignition on the Othello, or manual ignition on the multi-burner. This page is the sequence and the stop point. Product rows stay on the [Campingaz gas barbecue comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/campingaz-gas-barbecue). Peter F. used the Party Grill 400 CV manual, Party Grill 600 notes, and the amazon.co.uk files on 21 October 2026. These units were not lit in a lab.

Check which ignition you actually have

Ignition in this set is not one shared button. The black Party Grill, the 400 CV, the 600, the Attitude 2go CV and both Xperts list piezo. The Othello 1 CV lists electronic ignition with batteries in the bullets. The multi-burner lists manual ignition. Do not merge an older Party Grill diagram with the 400 CV knob sequence below. Cartridge Party Grills and the Attitude take a CV470-family click fit outdoors with valves closed. The 600 needs an R907 or R904 plus a Campingaz regulator and hose sold separately. You open the cylinder valve before the stove knob. The Xperts never name the fitting. Stop and read the plate. Fitting choices sit on the Campingaz gas barbecue buying guide.

Fit the cartridge or open the cylinder outdoors

Work outside on level ground, away from tents, awnings, caravans, sheds and balconies. GOV.UK and London Fire Brigade treat those spaces as off limits. For a CV stove such as the 400 CV, turn it upside down only while you fit the cartridge. Screw the CV470 Plus or CV300 Plus until it clicks, about one sixth of a turn. Do not force the thread. Fill the water tray to the maximum mark. UK reviews on the 400 CV say water in the cartridge bay stops the piezo. On the 600, fit the regulator and hose, leave the knob on O, then open the cylinder valve. Leak checks use soapy water, never a flame. If you smell gas before the knob opens, shut everything and move away.

Light with the lid off

For the Party Grill 400 CV (model 2000030685): water to the max mark, lid off, knob fully open, then push until the piezo clicks. If it fails, turn the knob to O and wait five minutes. Do not light with the lid locked down. On the 600, open the cylinder valve, then use the piezo. If the burner goes out, close the gas at once and wait five minutes. Shut-down is cylinder or regulator first, then the knob to O. The Othello uses electronic ignition and batteries, not the Party Grill knob push. The multi-burner needs a manual light. One UK review of the 400 CV says gas keeps flowing if the flame blows out, and no listing names a flame-failure device.

If it will not stay lit, stop

If the piezo will not click, check the water tray and the cartridge bay first. Water on the thread is a common 400 CV complaint. Confirm the cartridge clicked and that you are outdoors with the lid off. If you still get no spark after a cool five-minute pause, stop rather than flooding the burner. If you smell gas or see bubbles on a soapy joint, shut the cylinder or remove the cartridge and do not cook. A cracked hose, a joint that still bubbles, or a homemade adapter is Campingaz aftersales or a competent gas person. Once the flame is stable, shut down in the order the manual gives for your gas type. If you are still choosing between the 400 CV and the 600, use Party Grill 400 vs 600.

Common questions

Why will the piezo not click?
On the 400 CV, water in the cartridge bay is a repeated UK review cause. Also check that the cartridge clicked, the knob sequence matches your model, and you waited five minutes after a failed attempt. Keep water in the tray, not over the gas thread.
What if I smell gas before I open the knob?
Do not light. Shut the cylinder or remove the cartridge, move away, and find the leak with soapy water when it is safe. Never use a flame to find a leak. If the joint still bubbles after you remake it, stop and get help.
What do I do if the flame blows out?
Close the gas at the cylinder or cartridge path at once, turn the knob to O, wait five minutes, then relight outdoors with the lid off. Do not assume a flame-failure device will cut the flow. None is named in these files. One UK review of the 400 CV says gas keeps flowing after a blow-out.
Does the 600 light the same way as the 400 CV?
Same outdoor rules and five-minute wait, but the 600 needs the regulator and hose on an R cylinder, and you open the cylinder valve before the stove control. The 400 CV uses a cartridge bay without that valve. Shut-down on the 600 is cylinder or regulator first, then the knob to O.
How does the Othello light?
Electronic ignition with batteries named in the bullets. Use that control, not the Party Grill piezo push. Gas is still a CV470 Plus you supply, with hose and regulator in the bullets. The cartridge is not in the included line.
When do I stop and call Campingaz?
When a joint still bubbles, the hose is cracked, the cartridge will not click without force, or anyone suggests a homemade adapter. Commercial use and tent cooking are already outside the Twin Connection private-use limit. Do not keep clicking a flooded burner.
