2 burner vs 3 burner gas BBQ on a small grate

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are standing between a two-burner that will fit the side return and a three-burner that might hold the chicken and the sausages at once. A 2 burner vs 3 burner gas BBQ decision is harder than the shop slogans, because the guest tables do not match and a small grate has almost no cool zone. This page does not rank the seven listings. It says when to stay and when to leave. Once you stay, the [2 burner gas BBQ comparison](/hub/grills-and-barbecues/2-burner-gas-bbq) is the shelf, from about £90 to £225 on 19 October 2026. We did not measure a cook. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The guest tables do not match

Dunelm puts a two-burner at four to six people and a three-burner at six to ten. Which? calls a two-burner a common size for about four to six, then says to step up. B&Q puts two or three burners at up to four, and four burners at four to eight. Gardeners' World says one or two burners for a family of four, and at least four burners for six or more, which skips three. Gardenbox puts about 1,500 to 2,000 cm² at one to four people and argues that area matters more than burner count. There is no winner among those guides. A family of four on one line can be six people on another, and neither page measured your grate. A Weber two-burner at £499 on Weber's GB site is another product. Do not import a single headcount.

What a second burner is for

Two main burners give you two controls under one grate, so one side can run hotter. That is the gain over a single burner. It is not a place to park a chicken off the flame on a tabletop about 45 cm across. Half the grate is a narrow strip. You can cook in rounds. You cannot call that indirect roasting. A side burner is a hob, not burner three. The Xpert 200 states one at 2.1 kW. The BROILUCK states a 2+1 layout. The Xpert 100 L's count of 2 describes folding side tables, so it is not a hob you can rely on. Once you stay, a role inside the seven is the best 2 burner gas BBQ page.

What you cannot do on a small two-burner

The silver CosmoGrill states 1,287 cm² and the black one 1,323 cm², both about 45 cm square. The Xpert 100 L bullets say 45 × 34 cm. The Xpert 200 bullets say 54 × 34 cm, still one grate with two tubes, not three zones. Ignore BROILUCK's 7,000 cm² and the onlyfire field that says 252 square metres. The onlyfire bullet is 18 by 14 inches. These tabletops sit under Gardenbox's band of about 1,500 to 2,000 cm² for one to four people. Turn one burner off on a 45 cm grate and the cool food is still a hand's width from the lit burner. A three-burner on a wider body is how people buy a real off zone. Some compact threes are still small.

Stay or move on

Stay at two burners when the grate holds the meal in one layer or two rounds, and you do not need food parked off the flame. In this set that is a tabletop around 1,300 cm², or the Xpert 100 L if you want wheels and will buy a hose. A side hob is a reason to stay only when the extra is a pan. The checks are the 2 burner gas BBQ buying guide. Move toward three burners when foods cannot share one heat, or when six people are the normal Saturday. After you leave, the 3 burner gas BBQ comparison is a different shelf. Do not stretch a two-burner by believing a 7,000 cm² field.

Common questions

Is two burners enough for four people?
It can be, if the food fits the grate and you will cook in rounds. On a 1,287 cm² tabletop, four large steaks in one layer are a tight fit. Four burgers in two rounds are a different meal. Fit the centimetres you trust, not a guest slogan from a shop that never measured this grate.
Does a side burner count as the third?
No. It heats a pan beside the barbecue. The Xpert 200 and the BROILUCK state a side hob. That hob is not a third strip of grate, and it does not match a three-burner guest band. Burgers and a pot of corn can use the hob. A joint that must sit off the flame cannot.
Will a two-burner roast a chicken off the flame?
Not well on these small grates. One burner off still leaves the bird close to the lit burner when the whole surface is about 45 cm wide. A wider three-burner is the usual way to buy that off zone. A lid helps hood heat. It does not create distance from the flame.
Is a three-burner always physically bigger?
Not always. Some three-burner grills are still compact. What you are buying is another control and, on a wider body, a more usable cool end. Check the centimetres on that category the same way, instead of trusting a guest slogan. B&Q caps two and three burners at up to four people, which is a reminder that the count alone does not scale the meal.
How big is the grate on the models in this comparison?
The silver CosmoGrill states 1,287 cm² and the black one 1,323 cm². The Xpert 100 L bullets say 45 × 34 cm. The Xpert 200 bullets say 54 × 34 cm. Ignore BROILUCK's 7,000 cm² and the onlyfire field that says 252 square metres. Picture the onlyfire bullet's 18 by 14 inches instead.
