Cooking grill mat vs under grill mat

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have two amazon.co.uk tabs open and both titles say grill mat. One is a thin sheet about 40 cm across. The other is a pad you could stand a kettle barbecue on. Cooking grill mat vs under grill mat is that split: food on the bars, or drips on the floor. Centimetres decide which object you are looking at. Stars do not. The [grill mat comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-mat) lists both groups with the prices and size lines from the listings. This page does not pick a winner inside either group. Buying one to do the other job wastes the money and, on a lawn, can still leave a brown patch.

Two jobs, one name

A cooking sheet lies on the grate. Here it is fibreglass, usually PTFE-coated, and food is meant to touch it. Shelf prices run from about £4.99 with no reviews on Hongmeru to about £11.99 on Ankier. UK reviews mention cleaner bars and fat that sits until the food fries. An under-grill mat lies on the ground. VinBee, Alckijy, and FIREWESS are the pads, about £18.99, £12.85, and £17.99. A UK FIREWESS review that cooks on the racks is the swap this page is trying to stop. The Smoke Signal makes the same cut: deck pads for drips, cooking sheets for fish and eggs. A silicone side-shelf mat is neither, and it was not kept.

The size test on the cooking sheets

Bear Creek’s guide treats about 15 × 13 inches as a grate sheet and something near 48 inches as a deck pad. The same test works in centimetres when a listing prints two sizes. Cookey, Ankier, and the GQC six-pack state about 40 × 33 cm. The other GQC pack states about 40 × 30 cm, and its item count says 1. Linda's states 41.3 × 58.4 cm. Lukata states 50 × 40 cm. QH7 states 180 × 40 cm, one sheet you cut, though the form field says square.

The size test on the floor pads

Alckijy lists 100 × 150 × 0.5 cm at 950 g. That footprint is a patio, not a burger. VinBee’s title says 122 × 76 cm, and a feedback dimension says 10 × 10 × 10 mm. Those cannot both describe the pad. The material line is fibreglass cloth and polypropylene, which is not a food surface. FIREWESS’s title says 75 × 120 cm and a bullet says 24 × 42 inches. Those are not the same rectangle. A photo of a kettle on a dark pad is not the test. The FIREWESS review that cooked on the racks is the swap in real life. Two sizes that do not convert into each other are a conflict, not a choice of units.

What you lose if you swap them

Three 40 × 33 cm sheets do not cover the splash zone under a kettle, and a sheet that has been on the ground is not a clean grate liner. Reviews argue about char and smoke. They do not argue that the sheet protects a lawn. A floor pad under food is the wrong material. VinBee’s fibreglass cloth and polypropylene, Alckijy’s 1800°F line, and FIREWESS’s 2000°F bullet are not food-contact instructions. Regulation 1935/2004 is the UK frame for a surface that touches dinner, and these pads are not presented against that job. One review cooking on a FIREWESS pad does not make it a non-stick sheet. You can own both. They do not substitute. Scorch on artificial grass is under grill mat for decking.

Common questions

How do I tell from the title alone?
You often cannot. Grill mat and fire pit mat are used for both. About 40 × 33 cm, 50 × 40 cm, 41.3 × 58.4 cm, or 180 × 40 cm is a cooking sheet here. About 100 × 150 cm, 122 × 76 cm, or 75 × 120 cm is a floor pad. Two sizes that do not match have not told you what will arrive.
Will a floor pad cook a burger?
No. VinBee, Alckijy, and FIREWESS are pads for under the barbecue. A review that cooked on the FIREWESS racks shows the mix-up, not a method. The 1800°F and 2000°F bullets are seller lines for the pad, not a cooking temperature.
Will three 40 cm sheets protect a new patio?
No. Three sheets of about 40 × 33 cm cover part of a grate. Fat that misses them still hits the porcelain. A patio needs a measured floor pad, such as Alckijy’s stated 100 × 150 cm, and even that pad does not promise the grass stays green.
What if the listing gives two sizes?
Treat it as a conflict until one line is the one you can live with. FIREWESS states 75 × 120 cm and 24 × 42 inches. VinBee states 122 × 76 cm and 10 × 10 × 10 mm. One GQC pack says both six mats and one item. Measure the grate or the patio against a single stated size.
Is a silicone side-shelf tool mat either of these?
No. A small silicone mat for tools on a side shelf was not kept here. It will not stop a fish falling through the bars, and it will not catch a kettle’s drips. Close that tab and go back to the centimetres.
Which page do I open after I know the job?
For a sheet, open best reusable BBQ mats. For a pad, use the deck page linked above. If the sheet is already in the house, how to use a BBQ grill mat covers flame, knives, and washing. Do not use the best-sheet page to judge a lawn.
