Best BBQ grill mat: read the centimetres first

Updated: 23 October 2026

A Saturday search on amazon.co.uk for a best BBQ grill mat returns two different objects under one name. One is a thin sheet you lay on the bars so fish, halloumi, or chopped peppers do not fall through. The other is a floor pad you put under the barbecue so fat misses the patio. The [grill mat comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-mat) keeps those listings apart, with the shelf price and the size line on the page. This page is the check you do before you sort by stars. Start with the job, then the centimetres on that same listing. Sheets here sit around £5 to £13. The floor pads are about £13 to £19.

Sheet or pad

A cooking sheet sits on the grate. It is usually fibreglass with a PTFE coating, and food touches it. A floor pad sits on decking, stone, or grass, and food should not. A 4.6-star sheet and a 3.9-star pad can look like rivals in the same results. Linda's Essentials, Cookey, Lukata, Ankier, both GQC packs, Hongmeru, and QH7 are the sheets. VinBee, Alckijy, and FIREWESS are the pads. Buying VinBee at about £18.99 because the title says grill mat gives you a deck pad rated 3.9 from 63 reviews, not a surface for burgers. Mesh is a third object and is not in this batch. It lets more smoke through and does not hold fat the way a solid sheet does.

Size you can prove

About 40 × 33 cm covers part of a gas grate, not a six-burner. Cookey, Ankier, and the GQC six-pack state that size, and Ankier reviews needed two sheets on a wider barbecue. The other GQC pack says about 40 × 30 cm while the item-count field says 1, and the title also prints inches. Linda's states 41.3 × 58.4 cm. Lukata states 50 × 40 cm. QH7 is one 180 × 40 cm sheet you cut, though the form field says square. Alckijy lists 100 × 150 cm. VinBee’s title says 122 × 76 cm and a feedback line says 10 × 10 × 10 mm. FIREWESS’s title says 75 × 120 cm and a bullet says 24 × 42 inches.

Heat claims that disagree

Hongmeru’s bullet says up to 260°C. Ankier prints both −70°C to 260°C and 380°F. Those ceilings are not the same: 260°C is 500°F, and 380°F is about 193°C. Both GQC listings and QH7 print 500°F and no Celsius figure. Linda's, Cookey, and Lukata have no numeric heat limit in the text this comparison uses. A later live bullet on Linda's has been seen stating 260°C. That line is not treated as a fact on the Linda's row. Bake-O-Glide publishes 260°C for its own PTFE glass. Falcon Products cites Regulation 10/2011 and BS EN 1186 for that brand, not for these packs. Alckijy claims 1800°F and FIREWESS claims up to 2000°F. Those are seller lines for a floor pad, not a cooking setting, and not evidence that turf stays green.

Dishwasher mark and food-contact words

Ankier is marked no, so the plan is a sink wash. Cookey, Lukata, both GQC packs, Hongmeru, and QH7 are marked yes. Linda's has no yes or no field, only a bullet, and one Cookey review still prefers the sink after a tear. PFOA-free means the seller says that one chemical is absent. It does not prove UK food-contact rules. Assimilated Regulation 1935/2004, Article 3, says a food-contact material must not transfer anything that endangers health, changes the food unacceptably, or spoils taste or smell. The Food Standards Agency publishes the authorisation guidance. An FDA line is not that UK assessment. Hongmeru at about £4.99 has no reviews, and the item-count field says 1. Who should skip a named pack is on best reusable BBQ mats.

Common questions

Is a grill mat the sheet on the bars or the pad on the deck?
It can be either. A cooking sheet is the thin piece on the grate, and food sits on it. An under-grill mat is the larger pad for drips. VinBee, Alckijy, and FIREWESS are the pads here. Read the centimetres before the stars.
What size covers a normal gas grate?
Many packs state about 40 × 33 cm, which is part of a grate. Linda's states 41.3 × 58.4 cm, Lukata 50 × 40 cm, and QH7 is a 180 × 40 cm piece you cut. Measure the bars. Two small sheets still leave a gap on a wide grate.
Why do some listings say 260°C and 380°F in one sentence?
Ankier states both −70°C to 260°C and 380°F. 260°C equals 500°F, not 380°F. Use the line on the listing you are buying. Do not average the two figures, and do not copy Bake-O-Glide’s 260°C ceiling onto a pack that never stated it.
Does PFOA-free mean the sheet meets UK food-contact rules?
No. PFOA-free is a seller line that one substance is absent. UK food-contact materials sit under assimilated Regulation 1935/2004, Article 3. An FDA line is a US reference. A test cited for Bake-O-Glide does not transfer to these packs.
Should the dishwasher field say yes before I rely on it?
Yes, if the machine is the plan. Ankier is marked no. Linda's has only a bullet. A yes on the other packs means the seller allows the cycle. UK reviews still describe tears and sheets thrown away when washing fails.
When is a mesh mat a different buy?
When you want holes, so more smoke reaches the food and fat does not sit on a solid surface. None of the kept listings is a mesh. Search for it separately and read its own heat line. Do not assume it shares a temperature with a PTFE sheet.
