Under grill mat for decking, and the lawn it will not save

Updated: 23 October 2026

You bought an under grill mat for decking because the bullet said fireproof, and the lawn under the kettle is still brown. That is the limit of the three floor pads in this comparison. A pad can catch drips on stone. It is not a promise that turf stays green. The [grill mat comparison](/hub/grill-accessories/grill-mat) includes VinBee, Alckijy, and FIREWESS as pads, separate from the cooking sheets. This page stays on the floor. Artificial grass and a real lawn are harder than a patio stain, because heat through a thin cloth can scorch plastic blades or kill turf.

Drips on a patio are the realistic job

On stone or porcelain, the pad is there so fat misses the slab and small embers miss the grout. Alckijy at about £12.85 lists 100 × 150 × 0.5 cm and 950 g. UK reviews say it lies flat and catches splashes under a fire pit and a kadai. FIREWESS at about £17.99 draws UK comments about patios, porcelain, and decking under a pizza oven. Those reviews also call that pad thin. VinBee at about £18.99, 3.9 from 63 reviews, gets drip praise on decking, then a run of reviews in which the mat melted. Splashes are the job reviewers recognise. A 1800°F line on Alckijy, or 2000°F on FIREWESS, means the seller printed a high number. Give the pad a larger footprint than the barbecue’s legs, so drips that spit sideways still land on the cloth.

Artificial grass and real lawns

Artificial grass is plastic. Trulawn says a melted patch does not regrow, and a barbecue belongs on a patio or deck. Prestige Lawns puts charcoal on paving, not on turf. Neither firm tested these pads. Several VinBee reviews say the mat melted or the grass still burned, including under a disposable barbecue, despite a 122 × 76 cm title. One Alckijy review says the mat held while the grass burned. FIREWESS notes about an egg on imitation lawn are splash reports, not a trial that plastic grass survives charcoal.

What 1800°F and Bfl-s1 do not mean

Alckijy claims 1800°F. FIREWESS claims up to 2000°F, while its material field says Kieselerde. Those lines are not a test that a lawn stays green. VinBee’s feedback dimension says 10 × 10 × 10 mm. A melted-mat review is more useful. Bfl-s1 is not printed on these three pads. Floordirekt’s Dalton listing is a different mat and refers to Bfl-s1, written Bf1-s1 on the page. Turin wording adds a 40 cm gap and no direct fire. You cannot borrow that class onto these pads. FIREWESS also states 75 × 120 cm and 24 × 42 inches. Alckijy’s 100 × 150 cm is the footprint you can compare with the boards.

If the grass still matters more than the mat

If the lawn matters, move the barbecue onto paving or a patio. A mat on that hard surface can still catch fat. It does not turn turf into a hard surface. A fire pit or a disposable barbecue asks the pad to do too much. VinBee reviews include a burnt result under a disposable barbecue. Alckijy’s fire-pit review kept the mat and lost the grass. On deck boards, keep the legs stable so grease does not make a thin cloth slip. Cooking on these pads is the other wrong job. A PTFE sheet on the grate is how to use a BBQ grill mat.

Common questions

Will this save a porcelain patio from fat?
It can catch a lot of the splashes, which is what UK reviews of Alckijy and FIREWESS describe. The pad is not a second slab. Fat that misses the edge still marks the porcelain, so the cloth needs to be larger than the barbecue’s footprint.
Will it save artificial grass under a kettle?
Do not count on it. Trulawn’s warning is that plastic turf melts and does not grow back. Prestige Lawns allows a gas barbecue on turf only when it is raised and the heat never reaches the pile. In this set, grass still burned under VinBee, and under Alckijy the mat held while the grass died.
What about a fire pit or a disposable barbecue?
Those are the reviews where these pads do worst. VinBee comments include a melted mat and burnt grass under a disposable barbecue. An Alckijy fire-pit review kept the cloth and still burned the grass. Put a fire pit on paving you can afford to mark.
How big should the pad be?
Bigger than the drips, not merely bigger than the legs. Alckijy’s stated 100 × 150 cm is the clear patio size. VinBee’s title says 122 × 76 cm and a second field says 10 × 10 × 10 mm. FIREWESS gives 75 × 120 cm and 24 × 42 inches. Pick the one believable size that covers the splash zone, including spit to the side.
What does 1800°F or 2000°F mean here?
It means the seller printed that number. Neither figure is a test, in this comparison, that grass stays alive or that food can be cooked on the pad. Judge the pad by the surface under it and by what UK reviews say happened to that surface.
When is the mat the wrong product and I need paving instead?
When the surface is artificial grass, a real lawn, or anything that cannot take heat even with a cloth on top. Installers tell you to cook on patio, deck, or paving, and to keep charcoal off turf. The mat remains useful on that hard ground for fat and sparks. It will not make a fire pit safe on plastic grass.
