How to set up an indoor plant watering system

Updated: October 2026

The kit is on the table, you have not left yet, and you want to know how to set up an indoor plant watering system before a joint weeps onto the floor. The Products Compared editorial team used the twelve amazon.co.uk listings saved on 15 October 2026 and the setup notes in those UK reviews. This is not a ranking and not a lab test. A purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The [watering system for indoor plants comparison](/hub/garden-watering/watering-system-for-indoor-plants) is the product table. Finish one supervised cycle, with a jug at every outlet, before you trust a schedule.

Put the water where the pump can drink

You supply the reservoir on every pump in this set. Put the bucket on a tray, where you can still lift it when it is full. A beday review lost most of a three-week absence because the intake floated. Weight the intake. If it can bob to the surface, it is not ready. Do not tee the pump into a supply pipe. The anti-siphon part is not a licence to plumb the pump in. Stand tap water for at least 24 hours, which is the Royal Horticultural Society’s houseplant guidance, then pour it into the container. Forever Speed’s listing says not to place the unit outdoors. Aflybltol has to hang above the pots, and a full bag is about 6.5 kg. Which family you bought is the buying guide.

Cut, push, and charge

Pump kits expect you to cut the tube to length. Warm a tight end in hot water, push it fully home, and tug it. A hose that drops out is the beday complaint, and it becomes a flood once the timer starts. Charge before the first real run. No box includes a BS 1363 plug, so you use a USB adaptor you already own. IK10P-UK can take four AA cells, which are not in the box. One Tipkook evening programme emptied the container overnight. ITP-153 offers cycle-and-soak only when the run is 2 minutes or longer.

One jug per outlet

A controller that switches on is not proof the last pot got water. Put a jug under each dripper, run one cycle while you watch, and note the millilitres. The IK10P-UK hourly claim is the pump, not your pot. Watch the line after the pump stops. ITP-153 reviews include water that kept siphoning. If the jug keeps rising, you do not travel.

A globe gets a shorter test

Water the compost first, make a hole, and do not force the spike. Fill one globe over a saucer and look again in a few hours. If it has emptied, it is not a slow release. If a cell swells or heats, or water has gone through a ceiling, stop.

Common questions

Where does the pump sit?
In or on the container you supply, indoors, where the intake stays under the water. It does not ship with a tank, and it does not belong teed into a supply pipe. Weight the intake so it cannot float, which is how a beday review lost most of a three-week absence. Forever Speed’s listing says not to place that unit outdoors. The Wi-Fi pump also needs 2.4 GHz where it sits.
Do I cut the tube?
Yes on the pump kits. You cut 4 mm line to each pot, warm a tight end in hot water, and push it fully onto the barb. Tipkook reviews describe that job taking hours on 14 plants. A globe, the Bubblegum Stuff bag and an AUAUY stake do not need a cut. A hose that is only half on is the joint that drops out later.
How do I know each pot got water?
Put a jug under every outlet and run one saved cycle while you watch, then look again after the pump has stopped. A light on the timer is not a measurement. Write down the millilitres. If one pot stays dry, that dripper is blocked or the tube has pulled off. ITP-153 can keep siphoning after the motor stops, so the second look matters.
What if the tube will not push on?
Warm the end in hot water and push it fully home, which is what UK reviews did on IK10P-UK and Tipkook. Do not leave a barb half seated. If the fitting is split, or a non-return valve has cracked the way one beday review described on first use, stop and use the 30-day right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 rather than tape it and travel.
Why is there water in a new pump?
Forever Speed’s seller says a little water inside on arrival is from factory testing. Wipe it, charge the cell, and run a cycle into jugs before you judge the unit. Water inside is not the same as a pump that makes a noise and moves nothing, which also appears in that review file. A missing mounting bracket, reported once in the UK sample, is a parts check, not a sign the timer is programmed.
How do I set a globe so it does not dump?
Water the compost first, make a pilot hole, and do not force the spike, which is Thompsons’ sequence for globes in general. Fill one Pipihome or Yirong globe and watch it over a saucer for a few hours. If it empties, that globe is a dump, not a two-week device. Keep a glass lid out of strong sun. UK reviews linked a Pipihome sphere to burnt leaves on a balcony.
What is not a setup step for a mains pipe?
Connecting the pump to the rising main, or treating the anti-siphon piece as backflow protection. You fill a bucket. Notice and backflow under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 apply when a garden watering system is not hand-operated and can touch the supply. A leak through a ceiling, or a cell that is hot or swollen, is the point where you stop and get help.
