Watering lance for hanging baskets

Updated: October 2026

The compost is on the patio, your sleeve is wet, and the basket on the bracket is only half watered. A watering lance for hanging baskets has to reach the compost and land a soft pattern in it. Spray icons do neither job on their own. This page uses the nine amazon.co.uk listings in the [watering lance comparison](/hub/garden-watering/watering-lance). The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 16 October 2026 from those listings, RHS guidance and Thrive’s basket notes. We did not time baskets in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Curved 90 cm basket lances at other UK shops sit outside this set.

Reach the basket without the ladder

Thrive says a lance helps when you reach up, and that compost filled to about 1 cm below the rim is less likely to wash off. RHS guidance is a can and a fine rose, or a fine hose spray if the basket is too heavy to lift, with daily checks in hot weather. Neither source gives a bracket height, so this page will not invent one. Stated reach above about 80 cm is the LINZI at 84.5 cm and the fixed RESTMO at 94 cm in the bullets, with item dimensions of 91.5 cm. The LINZI has a 180° head and eight unnamed modes. A reviewer mentions Shower and Flood. The 94 cm RESTMO names ten patterns, including Shower and Mist, on a 180° ratcheting head. The telescopic RESTMO claims tall baskets, roofs and upstairs window boxes. Keep its lengths separate: bullets 95–155 cm, highlight 91–152 cm, size field 94 cm, item dimensions 100.5 cm. Joint leaks when you slide it are in the stored reviews. Shorter listings still say hanging baskets. The STYDDI is about 45 cm, the GRIFEMA’s dimensions are 47.5 cm, and the Draper states 670 mm. The AOOWU states no working length, so leave it when height is the reason you are buying. Thread detail is on the watering lance buying guide.

A shower, not a jet

RHS advice for a basket is a fine rose, or a fine hose spray, onto the compost. A jet moves the mix onto the paving. The Draper’s only pattern is a shower. Stored reviews call it gentle enough for pots and bonsai, on a 670 mm shaft and a 12 mm barb, with no jet to switch to. The 61 cm RESTMO is one rainfall pattern. The bullets claim 585 drilled nozzles, which we did not count. Reviews call it a full rose that leaves flowers standing and compost in the pot. At 61 cm it suits a basket you can already reach. Head adjustment on that wand is absent from the listing. On a multi-pattern head, start on shower and keep the flow down. A LINZI reviewer names Shower and Flood, and Flood is the one to ease off if compost moves. The reach top pick and the £7.19 best value are on best watering lance.

Point the head up, then store the length you can trust

The rose has to face the compost while your hands stay below the bracket. The GRIFEMA states 90°. The STYDDI, LINZI, 48 cm RESTMO, 94 cm RESTMO, telescopic RESTMO and AOOWU state 180°. The 61 cm RESTMO states no head angle. A degree claim still has review limits: the STYDDI head that will not point straight down, and one telescopic RESTMO review that says the head cannot be angled. Try the angle on the first basket, with the flow low, before you water the row. Store the lance at a length you can read. Leave the AOOWU 22 x 12 x 7 cm parcel size out of the reach plan. After watering, open the lance, drain it, and bring it indoors.

Seed trays stay with a can and a fine rose

Seed trays are a can and a fine rose. RHS guidance still prefers that for seed, because a hose uses more water. A mist icon on these lances is a hose pattern, and GRIFEMA reviewers say it behaves like a shower. If the basket is newly planted and the compost is loose, use the can until the roots hold the mix.

Common questions

How long a lance do hanging baskets need?
Long enough to reach the compost without a ladder, using a length the listing states. The LINZI states 84.5 cm. The fixed RESTMO states 94 cm in the bullets and 91.5 cm in the dimensions. The telescopic RESTMO claims a longer range and prints four figures. RHS and Thrive notes used here give no bracket height in centimetres, so match the listing to your own bracket.
Is 45 cm enough for a bracket basket?
It can be enough for a low bracket you can already touch. The STYDDI at about 45 cm, the GRIFEMA at 47.5 cm item dimensions, and the 48 cm RESTMO are the short group, and their reviewers still describe stretching. The Draper at 670 mm is a little longer and still a single shower. If you are on your toes now, look at 84.5 cm and above.
Which pattern keeps compost in the basket?
A shower or a low rainfall setting, aimed at the compost. The Draper is only that shower. The 61 cm RESTMO is one rainfall head, with 585 holes claimed on the listing. On a multi-pattern lance, start on Shower or Mist. If the compost moves, ease the flow. A jet is for a path, when a hose is allowed.
Do you need a head that angles up?
You need the rose pointed into the basket while your hands stay lower. These listings state 90° on the GRIFEMA and 180° on the STYDDI, the LINZI, both multi-pattern RESTMOs and the AOOWU. The 61 cm RESTMO leaves the angle unstated. One STYDDI review says the head will not point straight down, so check the first basket before you trust the degree figure.
What if the listing never states the length?
Leave it when the basket is high. The AOOWU, at £9.34, names eight modes and a 180° head and gives no working length. The 22 x 12 x 7 cm line is a parcel size. Several reviewers still wanted a few more inches. A blank length is a skip on this page.
Should seedlings in the basket get a mist setting?
Use a can and a fine rose for seed and for a newly planted basket, which is the RHS approach. A mist icon here is a hose pattern, and GRIFEMA reviewers say it behaves like a shower. Wait until the roots hold the compost. On a day when a mains hosepipe ban applies, the can is the tool anyway.
