Watering lance buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You are at the back of a border with a short spray gun, and the basket over the path is still out of reach. A watering lance buying guide should settle length, spray, control and the hose fitting before you pay. This page uses the nine amazon.co.uk listings in the [watering lance comparison](/hub/garden-watering/watering-lance), from £7.19 to £33.99. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 16 October 2026 from those listings and public UK sources. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The order is reach, then pattern, then control, then the connector.

Start with reach, not the pattern count

High baskets and the back of a wide bed are a length problem. Spray icons do not add centimetres. The short cluster is the STYDDI at about 45 cm (18 in in the bullets), the GRIFEMA at item dimensions of 47.5 cm, and the RESTMO 48 cm lance. The LINZI states 84.5 cm. The fixed RESTMO states 94 cm in the bullets and 91.5 cm in the item dimensions. The only telescopic listing is the RESTMO at £33.99 and 540 g. Keep its lengths separate: bullets 95–155 cm, highlight 91–152 cm, size field 94 cm, dimensions 100.5 cm. The AOOWU, at £9.34, states no working length. Its 22 x 12 x 7 cm dimensions are not called the shaft. Leave any listing whose centimetres you cannot read. A hard jet on a long shaft still strips compost, which watering lance for hanging baskets takes further.

Shower for compost, jet only when a hose is allowed

Most watering you will do is a soft shower on compost. A jet suits a path, a birdbath or a sill, and only when your water company allows a hosepipe. That limit sits on how to use a watering lance. Two listings are a shower only. The Draper, at £7.19, has one shower that stored reviews call gentle on pots and bonsai. The RESTMO wand at £29.74 is 61 cm with one rainfall pattern, and the bullets claim 585 nozzles, which we did not count. The GRIFEMA lists eight names, prints "spray" twice, and reviewers say about five settings feel distinct and that mist is closer to a shower. The 94 cm RESTMO names ten, and the telescopic RESTMO names seven. Extra icons leave a short shaft short.

Thumb lever or lockable trigger

A thumb lever lets you set the flow and walk to the next pot with the hand relaxed. A lockable pistol feels closer to a spray gun, with a separate knob. Reviewers describe a top rocker on the Draper, and the specification block leaves that control blank. The listings state a thumb or one-key control on the GRIFEMA, STYDDI, LINZI, the 94 cm RESTMO, the 61 cm RESTMO shower and the AOOWU. The lockable pistol plus a flow knob is on the 48 cm RESTMO and the telescopic RESTMO. If a pistol grip tires your hand, read the thumb listings. Draper reviews include a toggle that still passes water when set to off. The fitting decides whether the water stays in the hose.

Match the connector before you trust a universal claim

UK outdoor taps use BSP. Hozelock’s tap connector covers 1/2 in BSP (21 mm) or 3/4 in BSP (26.5 mm), then a hose-end piece for 12.5 mm or 15 mm hose. The lance still has to match the connector you own. The LINZI states a 3/4 in male garden thread, the 61 cm RESTMO states 3/4 in BSP, and the telescopic RESTMO states 3/4 in BSPP. The 94 cm RESTMO lists a BSPT outlet and a barb inlet, with mixed Hozelock fit in the reviews. The 48 cm RESTMO lists NPT on the inlet and BSPT on the outlet. The Draper is a 12 mm barb. The GRIFEMA is a 0.25 in NPT barb, and some reviewers still report a Hozelock-type fit, so you test the click. The STYDDI nut often arrives loose. The AOOWU lists no thread, and one UK review says it did not fit. Whether you need a shaft is watering lance vs spray gun.

Read the failure note on that same listing

The star line is the amazon.co.uk average, and a metal body still leaks at a valve. On the Draper, a review warning says the inner tube can burst if the valve stays shut while the hose is on. On the telescopic RESTMO, the sliding joint leaks, and one report says the sections blew apart after about three months. On the 48 cm RESTMO, a plastic screw split in frost. Drain the lance and bring it indoors.

Common questions

How long should a watering lance be?
Match the stated centimetres to the basket or bed a short gun misses. Read 670 mm on the Draper, 84.5 cm on the LINZI and 94 cm on the fixed RESTMO as separate claims. The telescopic RESTMO prints four length fields, from 95–155 cm to 100.5 cm. The AOOWU states no working length, so you cannot plan its reach.
Is a telescopic lance better than a fixed one?
It wins on reach when you need the extra length and you accept a joint that can leak. The telescopic RESTMO, at £33.99, is the only extendable shaft here. The fixed 94 cm RESTMO is simpler when you want one stated length. A telescopic label elsewhere does not rescue a 45 cm model whose reviewers still stretch.
Should you choose a thumb lever or a lockable pistol?
A thumb lever keeps the flow set while you move between plants. That is the style on most of these listings. The lockable pistol on the 48 cm RESTMO or the telescopic RESTMO is the closer match if you already like a gun. On the short RESTMO, 48 cm includes the head held straight out, so the pistol does not give you the 94 cm reach.
Will it click onto a Hozelock hose?
It clicks when the thread matches your connector. Hozelock’s tap connector is for 1/2 in or 3/4 in BSP, then 12.5 mm or 15 mm hose. The LINZI states a 3/4 in male garden thread. The GRIFEMA is 0.25 in NPT, and some reviewers still fitted a Hozelock-type connector. The AOOWU names no thread, and one UK review says it did not fit.
What does an NPT inlet mean on a UK hose?
NPT is the thread on the GRIFEMA at 0.25 in, and on the inlet of the 48 cm RESTMO, which also lists BSPT on the outlet. A typical UK outdoor tap is BSP. Test the fitting you own, or pick a listing that states 3/4 in BSP or BSPP.
