SUStee vs moisture meter

Updated: October 2026

The choice in SUStee vs moisture meter is less about which sensor is universally more accurate and more about how you want to check a plant. A SUStee stays in one pot and shows a white-or-blue cue. An analogue dial such as an XLUX gives a 1-to-10 spot reading, then must be removed and wiped. If you need every device type first, use our [watering indicator comparison](/hub/garden-watering/watering-indicator). If your decision is specifically between a leave-in stick and a reusable dial, the right answer depends on the number and size of your pots. One stays in, one comes out

SUStee stays in one pot. The window turns blue after watering and returns to white. Wait until it is fully white. A little blue means wait. That colour is not a percentage of water and not a UK laboratory result. An XLUX dial is a 1-to-10 spot check you remove and wipe. The seller says five minutes, or the metal tip corrodes. It suits several pots in turn, and it is a poor reminder left beside one plant. Both types work without a battery. The sequence is on how to use a soil moisture meter.

Match the size and pack to the job

Small SUStee, 120 mm, was £8.70 for pots under about 10 cm. Medium, 180 mm, was £10.80 for about 10–18 cm. The five-packs were £23.00 and £24.30. Five sticks do not fix a wrong diameter. The core lasts about six to nine months in organic compost on the maker’s average, and you replace it. The plastic body stays. The XLUX T10 was £9.99 and the four-pack £19.99. One dial can visit several pots. The two-packs share one review file, the five-packs share another, and the XLUX packs share themes. The count is not a test of the exact size in the basket.

What each side can get wrong

A SUStee can stay blue in bone-dry compost, change slowly, or show brown fibre. Check size and depth, and read it in the pot, before you bin it. If the compost disagrees with the window, trust what you can feel. A dial tip rusts if it stays wet, and the body is clumsy in a small pot. There is no cited UK laboratory comparison of these ASINs. The pF 2.3 line is a maker claim. Shared XLUX reviews do not turn the needle into a percentage.

When the stick, and when the dial

Pick SUStee when you want a leave-in white-or-blue cue in a pot of the stated diameter. Small is under about 10 cm. Medium is the longer stick for about 10–18 cm, not a more accurate sensor. Pick the XLUX dial when you will spot-check several pots, remove it within five minutes and wipe it every time. A reservoir float, or a probe for a deep outdoor container, is outside this fork. Do not force a SUStee into the wrong diameter to answer that job.

Common questions

Does a SUStee replace an analogue dial?
Not exactly. SUStee remains in one pot and gives a white-or-blue watering cue, while a dial provides a relative 1-to-10 spot check wherever you insert it. SUStee is more convenient as a persistent reminder. A dial is more flexible across several pots. Both still need a physical sense-check.
Which SUStee size fits which pot?
The small version is intended for pots under about 10 cm in diameter, and the medium version for pots roughly 10–18 cm across. Use the current maker sizing and insert to the arrow marks. Do not choose solely by plant height, because correct placement in the growing medium is what lets the stick respond.
Do you leave a SUStee in the compost?
Yes. SUStee is designed to remain in the correctly sized pot and should be read there. The window turns blue after watering and later returns to white. The maker says to wait until it is fully white before watering. Removing it to watch the colour changes its drying behaviour.
Why must an XLUX come out within five minutes?
XLUX seller guidance says the metal tip may corrode if it stays in compost for longer than five minutes. Read the settled needle, remove the probe and wipe it clean with a soft dry cloth. A dial is a temporary measuring tool, not a leave-in marker like SUStee.
How long should a SUStee refill core last?
The maker gives about six to nine months as an average in organic compost. That is not a guarantee for every growing medium or watering pattern, so judge replacement by whether the core still changes correctly after insertion and moisture have been checked. The replaceable core also adds an ongoing cost.
Is the SUStee colour change a moisture percentage?
No. White and blue are the maker’s watering cues, not a percentage display. SUStee describes the fully white point using its own pF design claim, but that should not be presented as an independent UK accuracy test. A dial’s 1-to-10 number is also relative rather than a moisture percentage.
Why do different packs share review counts?
Retail listings can group size and quantity variants, so reviews may be pooled across related products. The SUStee two-packs, SUStee five-packs and XLUX packs each have shared feedback within their respective listing groups. Check the exact length, pot range and pack quantity rather than assuming every review concerns the variant in your basket.
