Impulse sprinkler not rotating

Updated: 23 October 2026

The head sits on the spike and does nothing, or it walks one way and parks, or the jet is a wet patch a couple of feet wide. An impulse sprinkler not rotating is usually too little flow at the nozzle, a leak at the connector, or a trip that cannot latch. Oil is not the fix, and a heavier sled will not invent pressure the tap does not have. Work in that order before you replace a head from the [impulse sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/impulse-sprinkler). If you have not set the pin, use [how to set an impact sprinkler](/hub/garden-watering/impulse-sprinkler/sub/impulse-sprinkler-how-to-set). Check flow before you blame the head

Put one sprinkler on the hose and take off any second head. Two impact nozzles share one flow, and the downstream head is the one that stalls. Unkink the hose, open the tap fully, and see whether this single head clicks. Then time a 10 litre bucket from the end of that hose. A bucket that creeps full means the arm has little to hit. This timing is a rule of thumb, not a pass mark for these eight. Ofwat's 0.7 bar figure is the floor in the street main, not the pressure at your nozzle. A long 12.5 mm hose costs flow, so try a shorter length once. One FANHAO listing prints 20 to 80 psi. Orbit says under about 15 psi an impact head will not run properly. Those are maker notes. Ignore the Gardena amazon.co.uk pressure line.

A leak pretends to be low pressure

If a puddle is growing under the connector, the nozzle is not receiving the water you timed. Tighten the joint before you judge the throw. One FANHAO review seated the inlet washer with a spanner. A review of the brass end says a Hozelock connector would not hold, so water escapes at the click. LATERN reviews describe a weeping joint as well as a one-way stall. Dry the inlet, run the single head, and only then decide the jet is short. A bent LATERN stake is a mount fault, not a pressure fault. Rinse grit out of the nozzle with the head off the hose. Do not drill the hole larger. Do not oil the arm. Rain Bird treats lubricant as a cause of failure. A STYDDI review in which a stuck head was oiled is a complaint, not a tip.

It goes one way and parks

A head that travels one way and sits on a collar is different from a head that never moves. The pin is down, the stop catches it, and the arm has to kick the head back. Lift the pin as a test, with one head only. If the head then walks a full circle, the supply can drive the arm and the sector trip is what it cannot finish. If it still will not move with the pin up, look again at the leak and the bucket. A Gardena that only ever spins one way on a soft tap is the pressure case. A Gardena that ran and then stopped after a few days is a broken mechanism. The best impulse sprinkler page already records those early stops.

When to stop and change category

Stop when one head, a dry inlet, a pin in the right place, and a slow 10 litre bucket still leave a dribble of a couple of feet. The tap is the limit. An oscillating bar can still wet a rectangle when the jet is too weak to drive an impact arm. A heavier sled will not create litres the hose does not carry. Opening the pipework, fitting a double check valve, or adding a pump from a butt is a plumber's question. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require backflow protection on a hose union tap, and these sprinklers do not include that valve. If the head worked and then seized, return or replace that head.

Common questions

Why will it not turn at all?
Most often the nozzle is short of flow, the inlet is leaking, or grit is in the jet. Run one head on an unkinked hose, then time a 10 litre bucket with the sprinkler removed. A puddle under the connector means you have not tested the head. Tighten the washer first. If the bucket is slow on a short hose, the tap is the limit.
Why does it turn one way and stop?
The trip pin is meeting a collar and the arm cannot kick the head back. Lift the pin as a test. If the head then completes a circle, the supply can drive the arm and the sector is what fails. A head that died after days of working means the trip itself has failed.
Why is the spray only a dribble or a couple of feet?
Water is leaving at the connector, the hose is long and thin, or the tap cannot accelerate the jet. FANHAO reviews include a weeping seal and a Hozelock click that will not hold on the brass end. A couple of feet from a dry inlet and a slow bucket means a different pattern.
Should I oil the arm?
No. Rain Bird's sheet lists lubricant as a cause of failure and says not to oil the head. The STYDDI review in which a stuck head was oiled is a complaint, not a method. Rinse debris with the head off the hose. Drilling the nozzle makes a weak jet worse.
When should I buy an oscillating sprinkler instead?
Buy an oscillating bar when one head, a dry inlet, and a short hose still will not drive the arm, and the lawn is a rectangle a single jet will not cover evenly. A bar can wet that shape at a flow that will not keep an impact arm clicking. That comes from UK guidance for weak taps, not from a test of these eight. Leave the tap shut if a hosepipe ban is in force.
