Impulse sprinkler buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a lawn closer to a circle than a long strip, an outdoor tap, and a listing that prints a huge area plus the words quick connector. An impulse sprinkler buying guide settles three things before that area is worth believing: whether the tap can drive the clicking arm, whether the grass is a circle or a wedge, and whether the hose you own will couple to this head. The eight listings in the [impulse sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/impulse-sprinkler) run from about £9.98 to about £37.99. This page is that order. It does not name a winner. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are buying

An impulse sprinkler, also called an impact or pulse sprinkler, throws one jet. A spring arm flicks into that jet and clicks the head round a few degrees at a time, through a full circle or a sector. You are buying that mechanism on a spike or a sled, plus whatever thread the seller fitted on the inlet. It suits an open lawn when the outdoor tap can keep the arm moving. It suits you poorly when the grass is a long rectangle, because one jet wets a circle or a pie slice and leaves the corners dry. An oscillating bar matches that strip. Picks inside these eight sit on the best impulse sprinkler page. A head that will not lock onto your hose never reaches the lawn.

Pressure before the area on the box

Pressure comes before any square-footage claim. HydroSure specifies one 1/2 inch garden impulse head at about 2 to 4 bar. That is a merchant range for a different head, not a test of these ASINs. Two bar is about 29 psi. Ofwat's 0.7 bar figure is the floor in the communication pipe, not the pressure left at a nozzle after a long hose. Time a 10 litre bucket on the tap and the hose you will use. If the bucket fills as a tired dribble, the arm will not keep clicking, whatever the carton prints. That timing is a rule of thumb, not a pass mark for these eight. The Gardena amazon.co.uk pressure line is not a credible operating point, so do not use it as a minimum. Two heads on one hose split the flow. The second head is the one that usually sits still.

Sled, spike, and the hose end

The metal sleds here weigh about 650 g to 970 g. A weighted base sits on a patio or on baked clay, and it can creep on a slope. A spike is the right mount when the soil will take it. Reviews of the cheap LATERN stake describe it bending in hard ground. Many UK outside taps are 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch BSP. Hozelock's outdoor tap connector is made for those tap threads, not for every sprinkler click. Gardena's click is a second pattern. A brass quick male end is a third. A review of FANHAO B0H1GB2ZVQ says a Hozelock connector would not hold on the supplied end. If your hose is already on Hozelock, budget for the matching adaptor.

When to leave this category

Leave the impulse head when the shape, the tap, or the law fails the first checks. A rectangular lawn wants an oscillating bar. A tap that will not drive one arm will not be rescued by a heavier sled. These heads are mains sprinklers, not an exemption. Read the sprinkler hosepipe ban page before you open the tap. When the tap is strong, the lawn is a circle or a wedge, the connector matches, and no ban is in force, the carton area comes after the bucket and the hose end.

Common questions

What pressure does an impulse sprinkler need on a UK tap?
Use about 2 to 4 bar as a trade band from HydroSure's specification for one 1/2 inch garden impulse head, not as a lab result for these eight. A printed 20 to 80 psi band is that listing's window only.
Spike or sled for hard ground?
Choose a sled when the soil will not take a stake or the head must sit on a hard standing. The metal sleds here weigh about 650 g to 970 g. Choose a spike when the lawn is soft enough to push it in. Reviews of the cheap LATERN stake describe it bending in hard ground. Forcing it is a bent mount, not extra range.
Will a brass quick connector fit Hozelock?
Treat them as different fittings until you have checked. Hozelock's tap connector is for 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch BSP on the outdoor tap. A brass male end on a sprinkler is not that click. A review of FANHAO B0H1GB2ZVQ says a Hozelock connector would not hold on the supplied end. Gardena's click is a third pattern. Buy the adaptor that matches the hose in the shed.
Is 5,800 square feet a UK lawn?
It is a seller maximum on both FANHAO listings. Converted, 5,800 square feet is about 539 square metres. That conversion does not mean the jet will wet 539 square metres from your tap. Reviews on the same listings also describe coverage nearer 100 square feet. Gardena's UK page for the Comfort spike states 75 to 490 square metres from a 5 to 12.5 metre throw.
Which listings have no reviews?
In this capture, two metal spikes have no star line: WANGHONGGOGO B0H36T6YD8 at about £12.99 and ZhuXIXILiang B0H36KRL68 at about £10.99. They remain in the comparison because they are impulse heads on a spike. They stay out of any best-of sentence, because a score that uses stars and review volume has nothing to multiply. A missing star line is not a hidden high rating.
