Sprinkler hosepipe ban

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are at the outside tap, and the question is whether you may open it this week. A sprinkler hosepipe ban is a temporary use ban from your water company. Where that ban is in force, a mains-fed impulse sprinkler counts as a prohibited hosepipe use. The head does not become exempt because you are not holding the hose. This page follows the 1991 Act, the 2010 Order, and company notices as they stood on 21 October 2026. It does not name a sprinkler to run during a ban. The [impulse sprinkler comparison](/hub/garden-watering/impulse-sprinkler) is for a head where your company has no ban. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A sprinkler counts as a hosepipe

Section 76 of the Water Industry Act 1991 lets a water undertaker prohibit specified uses for a set period. Watering a private garden with a hosepipe is one of those uses. The Water Use (Temporary Bans) Order 2010 sets out what using a hosepipe covers, and a sprinkler on a hose sits inside that definition. An impulse head and an oscillating bar are the same kind of use here: mains water, a hose, and a fitting that spreads it on the garden. A metal sled or a Gardena spike does not change that. None of these listings is an exemption. If the notice is in force, leave the tap shut. The how to set an impact sprinkler page is only for a day when that notice does not apply.

The ban is the company's area, not the whole UK

Each undertaker publishes its own notice, with its own start and its own area. Water UK's hosepipe FAQ, as read on 21 October 2026, listed bans for Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Bristol Water, Cambridge Water, Essex and Suffolk Water, Southern Water, South East Water, South West Water, Thames Water, and Wessex Water, with starts in July or August 2026. That list is a map of who had published a ban. It is not permission to water if your company is missing, and it is not proof the ban is still in force next month. Use the company on your bill. Water UK gave Thames Water a start of 22 July 2026. Thames Water's own page says 23 July 2026. For Thames, use 23 July 2026. That page was updated on 12 October 2026 and still barred sprinklers on the mains. South East Water's Sussex FAQ tightened rules on 9 October 2026, including mains sprinklers. Scotland and Northern Ireland follow Scottish Water and Northern Ireland Water.

Cans, butts, and what is still described as allowed

What remains allowed is company text, not a national list. Thames Water's page, updated 12 October 2026, still describes a watering can as allowed, and stored rainwater as allowed, while mains sprinklers stay prohibited. Filling cans so you can tip them into the sprinkler puts you back on the restricted use. On South East Water's Sussex FAQ from 9 October 2026, a hose on a water butt is not restricted, and filling that butt from the mains is restricted. Those sentences are Thames and Sussex. They are not a template for Anglian, Southern, or anyone else. A butt you refilled from the mains after the ban began is not stored rainwater.

What this page will not clear for you

This page will not grant a personal exemption. Anglian's July 2026 notice mentions some disability exceptions. Those words belong to Anglian. If you think an exception applies, ask the undertaker on your bill and keep the reply. This page will not clear a drip line as a substitute. An impulse sprinkler is plainly inside a mains hosepipe ban. On 21 October 2026, Water UK's FAQ and the Thames and South East pages still described bans in force. Check the notice the morning you meant to water. If it is in force, the sprinkler stays off. If it is not, the buying guide is the next read.

Common questions

Is a sprinkler banned if I am not holding a hosepipe?
Where your undertaker has a temporary use ban in force, a sprinkler on the mains is a hosepipe use under the 2010 Order. You do not have to stand holding the hose. The make and price do not take it outside the notice.
Is the ban the whole of the UK?
Each water company publishes its own notice. Water UK's FAQ on 21 October 2026 listed bans for ten English and Welsh companies. That list is a map, not a national switch. Scotland and Northern Ireland follow Scottish Water and Northern Ireland Water. Use the company on your bill.
Can I use a watering can?
Thames Water's page, updated 12 October 2026, still describes a watering can as allowed while mains sprinklers are not. That is Thames's text. Using cans to supply the sprinkler puts the hose and the head back into the restricted use.
Can I run the sprinkler from a water butt?
Thames describes stored rainwater as allowed. South East Water's Sussex FAQ says a hose on a water butt is not restricted. Both are company texts from October 2026, not a UK-wide permit. If your company is silent, ask before you connect this sprinkler.
Can I fill the butt with the hose during a ban?
South East Water's Sussex FAQ, from 9 October 2026, says filling the butt from the mains is restricted, even where water already in the butt is not. A butt you filled from the hose after the ban began is mains water in a box.
What is the fine?
The Water Industry Act 1991 sets the maximum at level 3 on the standard scale. Anglian Water's notice of 17 July 2026 states that as a fine not exceeding £1,000, and it states that sprinklers count as a hosepipe. That figure is that notice's ceiling, not every company's wording.
