How to use a hose reel cart

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a freestanding cart with a hose in the drum, or you want the first half-hour clear before the box arrives. How to use a hose reel cart is not the same job as screwing a cassette to a wall. This trolley stands on the path. You find the fittings, you fit a short feeder if that kit says so, you walk the hose out without pulling the frame over, and you rewind only after the pressure is off. The [hose reel cart with hose comparison](/hub/garden-watering/hose-reel-cart-with-hose) is the set of kits. Peter F. used maker FAQs and WaterSafe notes. This is not a lab test. Find the fittings and make the feeder

Open the carton on a dry path. On the Hozelock open cart the title says the cart arrives assembled. Reviews still say the connector bag is inside the drum. Unwind the hose once, take the fittings out, and only then connect anything. People who skip that step think parts are missing. They are often in the middle of the coil. Hozelock's FAQ for part 2435 says you cut about 1.5 m from the included hose as the feeder, so the trolley can sit about 1.5 m from the wall. A 50 m hose then has about 48.5 m left to walk with. That cut is for 2435. Do not shorten every hose in the house because of it. Which length you bought is the buying guide. The Wurzberge cart already includes a separate 2 m leader plus 30 m of rubber hose. Use the leader and leave the 30 m intact. The Ultramax listing is a different assembled Hozelock cart. Follow the leaflet in that box. An outdoor tap connector is not a kitchen-tap fitting. If you cannot see a double check valve, stop before you run water.

Walk the hose out

Set the cart on level paving, with the feeder on the tap and the nozzle on the free end. Open the tap part way first. On the Wurzberge reviews, connectors blow off when the tap is fully open. Water UK's advice is to use a self-closing gun and not to leave the end submerged. Pull in line with the cart, not sideways across the axle. Ultramax and Wurzberge reviews both say the cart tips when the hose is drawn out. If the frame tilts, stop and move the trolley closer instead of leaning on the hose. For the far bed, walk the hose out so it does not kink at the drum mouth. Shut the gun, ease the loop out with the pressure off, then open the gun again. Take a corner of the house as a curve on the ground, not as a tight bend against the brick.

Rewind with the pressure off

Leave the tap open and the crank fights you. Hozelock's Fast Cart 2450 leaflet, a different model from 2435, shows the order: turn the tap off, open the nozzle so the pressure drops, then rewind. Do not copy that leaflet's two-year guarantee onto 2435. Hozelock states five years for 2435 if you register. Every cart in this set is a manual crank. The 2489 style field says Retractable and the operation mode says manual. Wind with light tension so the coils sit together. Ultramax reviews say the coils spring unless the hose is kept tight. If a layer springs, stop and relay it. Stand to the side when you disconnect. If a house-supply joint weeps, that is a plumber, not a new connector from the shed.

Drain it before frost

WaterSafe's winter note is to disconnect the hose, drain it and store it before frost, and to isolate the outside tap if you can. A frost-resistant bullet is not permission to leave the cart outside full of water. The Ultramax listing says the hose is UV and frost resistant. That is a product claim, not a storage instruction. Empty the feeder, walk the hose out on a fall, and wind it only when it has drained. A temporary use ban means you may not water with the hose. It does not mean you leave a full hose connected until spring. Whether you may water at all is the hosepipe ban page. Call a plumber if you cannot see double-check protection or the supply joint weeps. WaterSafe cites BS EN 806-5 for replacing check valves about every ten years. Fitting that valve is their work. An empty cart, if that is what you bought, is with or without a hose.

Common questions

Do I cut the new hose?
Only if that kit tells you to. For Hozelock part 2435, the FAQ says you cut about 1.5 m from the included hose to make the feeder. The Wurzberge cart already has a separate 2 m leader, so do not cut its 30 m hose for the same job. If your box supplies a leader, use the leader.
How long should the feeder be?
About 1.5 m on the 2435 FAQ, which is the gap between the outside tap and the cart inlet. The Wurzberge leader in this set is 2 m, already cut. A longer feeder steals working hose and leaves more pipe to trip over. Measure to the spot where the cart will stand before you cut.
Where are the connectors?
On the Hozelock open cart, reviews say they are packed inside the drum. Unwind the hose once to reach the bag. They are not a second parcel you should already have found in the cardboard. If the bag really is absent from an opened box, that matches the missing-parts complaints some of those reviews report.
Can I leave it connected while I wind?
Turn the tap off first, then open the nozzle so the hose goes soft, then wind. The Fast Cart 2450 leaflet shows that order on a different model, and it is the right habit here. Winding under pressure is when cranks stall and connectors blow off. Disconnect and drain before frost, ban or no ban.
Why will it not rewind?
The usual causes are pressure still in the hose, a loose coil that springs, or a cart that was never auto-rewind. Every cart here is a manual crank. The 2489 Retractable line conflicts with its handle. Ultramax reviews add a rigid hose that is simply hard to turn. Shut the tap, open the gun, and relay the loose layer.
Why does the cart fall over?
You are pulling sideways, or the frame is light for the tug. Ultramax and Wurzberge reviews both describe tip-over as the hose is drawn out. Pull in line with the wheels, and move the cart closer instead of leaning on the hose. A snapped wheel joint, repeated on the Wurzberge mounts, will not reseat if you pull harder.
