Two way garden tap splitter: two hoses from one spout

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have one outside tap and two jobs that do not want the same moment. A two way garden tap splitter screws onto that spout and gives each hose an outlet. Buy one only if each outlet has a valve, you leak-test it on day one, and you take it off before a frost. Leave it if you still need a watering can under the tap. The only splitter in our [hose connector comparison](/hub/garden-watering/hose-connector) is the Tesmotor listing. Peter F. updated this page on 23 October 2026 from that listing. What the second outlet is for

The useful fitting is two hose outlets, each with a valve, on one UK outside tap. You can run the border and leave the greenhouse shut without unscrewing anything. Hozelock's own two-way, which is not in our table, uses a valve per outlet. An open Y wets both jobs at once. The body also blocks a watering can under the spout, and it adds a joint that can weep. A single hose that only needs to stop soaking you at the gun stays on the best garden hose connector page.

The splitter in this comparison

The Tesmotor unit is about £14.44 on amazon.co.uk, rated 4.3 from 200 reviews, 28 of them marked as UK reviews. It is plastic and weighs about 290 g. The listing prints 3/4 inch and also an EU-standard bullet, not the 21 mm, 26.5 mm and 33.3 mm BSP set. Praise covers two zones and some dry fits with PTFE tape. Criticism covers leaks at the top joint. It is not a double check valve. The outside diameters are on the garden hose connector buying guide.

Fit, tape and the top joint

Start on a clean spout. If the joint uses a flat washer, seat it against the outlet by hand. Several Tesmotor reviews add PTFE tape and then describe both results: some joints stayed dry, and the top joint still leaked for others. Tape is reasonable on day one. It is not a repair for a body that weeps between its own nut and the moulding. Close both outlet valves, open the outside tap, and watch the top joint before either hose runs. A drip where the splitter body meets its own top nut is the failure in the unhappy reviews. If the thread jams after a turn, stop. The washer on a plain tap connector is on how to fit a hose connector.

Frost and a hosepipe ban

Take the splitter off before a frost, drain it, and store it indoors. Hozelock's care page says multi-way adaptors split when water stays in them. The Tesmotor body is plastic and has the same problem. A splitter does not make watering legal during a hosepipe ban. Water UK's FAQ still treats a hosepipe, and the equipment attached to it, as restricted where a ban applies. We are not repeating a product line that a two-way connector may be used during a ban if local rules allow. Use the fitting when two valved outlets are the job, leak-test the top joint, and take it off when the cold arrives.

Common questions

Can I run two hoses from one UK outside tap?
Yes, with a two-way splitter on the spout, if the thread matches and each outlet has a valve. In this comparison that is the Tesmotor at about £14.44, rated 4.3 from 200 amazon.co.uk reviews. Flow on each leg drops when both hoses run. The splitter does not add a second supply, and it does not include a double check valve.
Do I need a valve on each outlet?
Yes, if the two hoses are meant to run at different times. A valve per leg lets you shut one and leave the other open. Hozelock's two-way connector uses quarter-turn valves for that. An open Y sends water down both legs as soon as the tap is open. If a lever will not hold its position, the second outlet is not really switched.
Why does a splitter leak at the top joint?
That joint, between the body and the nut on the tap, is a second seal beyond the washer on the spout. Tesmotor reviews include leaks there, including after PTFE tape, and fits that stayed dry with tape. A weep in the body, or a unit that comes apart, is the complaint in the listing. Do not chase it with pliers.
What thread does the Tesmotor listing print?
It prints 3/4 inch and an EU-standard bullet. It does not print the BSP adaptor sizes on Hozelock's two-way connector, about 21 mm, 26.5 mm and 33.3 mm. If the spout measures about 33 mm, the bullet has not proved that this body will fit.
Can I still fill a watering can?
Often not, while the splitter stays on the tap. The body occupies the spout, and a review in this set says the can no longer sits underneath. Fill from a hose end, or take the splitter off when you want the bare tap. If cans are the daily job, a splitter you must remove every time is the wrong tool.
Do I leave it on over winter, or during a hosepipe ban?
Take it off before a frost, drain it, and bring it indoors, along with the hoses and guns if a freeze is forecast. Hozelock's care notes say trapped water splits multi-way adaptors. A ban is a separate limit. Water UK still covers a hosepipe and attached equipment where a local ban applies, so a splitter is not an exemption.
