How to fit a hose connector without a drip at the tap

Updated: 23 October 2026

The outside tap is off, and you want the hose to click on without a weep at the spout. How to fit a hose connector, for these plastic click fittings, is a short sequence: a flat washer, a hose pushed fully home, and the water stop at the gun rather than on the feeder hose. Most first-day leaks come from skipping one of those. The nine listings are on the [hose connector comparison](/hub/garden-watering/hose-connector). Peter F. updated this page on 23 October 2026 from Hozelock's FAQ and WaterSafe. We did not film a laboratory fitting. A purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Fit the tap connector

Turn the tap off and clean the male thread. Seat the washer flat in the tap connector so it meets the end of the spout square, not folded. Screw the connector on by hand until the washer is compressed. Do not finish it with pliers or a spanner. PTFE tape does not replace that washer. On a Hozelock-style tap connector the seal is the washer against the spout, not tape on the thread. If the body still spins freely, the washer is missing or the thread is the wrong family. What to buy is on the garden hose connector buying guide. If the thread jams after one turn, stop. Forcing a crossed spout cracks the tap.

Fit the hose-end connector

Unscrew the hose tail before you try to push the hose on. Hozelock's FAQ is that order: tail off, hose into the grip, tail tightened again. Cut the hose square. Warm a cold, stiff hose in your hands, then push until it stops. You should not still see bare tail between the hose end and the connector body. If the connector later pops off the reel hose, the usual causes are a hose that never went fully home, a loose tail, or a water stop on the feeder hose. Recutting square and repeating the tail sequence fixes a large share of pop-offs. It will not fix a hose split lengthwise. Listings here that name a bore usually say 12.5 mm, 15 mm, or both.

Put the water stop at the gun end

The feeder hose stays on the tap or the reel and gets an ordinary hose-end connector. The AquaStop goes at the gun, where you unclip the spray gun. Hozelock's FAQ is direct: an AquaStop on the feeder hose is a reason the fitting pops off. Open the tap slowly and watch the spout, the hose tail and the gun joint. A fine weep at the spout is the washer. A weep at the tail is the hose not home. Do not leave the hose end submerged in a water butt. A second outlet is on the two way garden tap splitter page.

When to stop and call a plumber

Stop if the tap thread jams, if water comes from the wall, or if you are fitting a new outside tap rather than a connector. Moving a double check valve is in the same group. None of the connectors in our comparison includes that valve. Water hammer is a tap-valve issue on Hozelock's FAQ, not a setting on the hose connector. Before a frost, drain multi-way adaptors, guns and hoses and bring them indoors. Hozelock says trapped water splits them, and a 2352 review describes a split nozzle. If the joint stays wet unless you use tools on the spout, call a plumber.

Common questions

Which way does the washer face?
Flat against the end of the tap spout, seated so the whole face meets the outlet together. It should not fold, and it should not sit cocked on one edge. The seal on this style of tap connector is that washer, not the thread itself. Hand pressure is enough once it is flat.
Should I use PTFE tape on a Hozelock tap connector?
Not instead of the washer. Tape on the thread does not seal the spout face, and it can keep the connector from seating. Clean the thread, fit the washer, and tighten by hand. If a hand-tight joint still drips, undo it and reseat the washer. Pliers are not the next step.
How do I get the hose onto the connector?
Take the hose tail off first. Cut the hose square, push it fully into the grip until it stops, then tighten the tail so the grip holds the outside. If a band of tail is still visible, the hose is not home and it will pop off when the tap opens.
Why does the connector pop off the reel hose?
Usually the hose was not fully home, the tail is loose, or a water stop is on the feeder hose instead of a plain hose-end connector. Hozelock names that last mistake as a pop-off cause. Recut square, refit the tail, and keep the AquaStop at the gun. If the hose wall has split, cut back to sound hose.
Can I tighten the tap connector with pliers?
No. Hand tight, with the washer flat, is how these tap connectors are meant to seal. Pliers crease the plastic and pinch the washer. If hand tight still drips, check that the washer is present and that the thread matches the tap. If the thread jams, stop and get a plumber.
Where does the AquaStop go, and what about frost?
The AquaStop goes on the gun end, so the valve is there when you remove the spray gun. The feeder hose gets a normal hose-end connector. Before a frost, drain the hose, the gun and any multi-way adaptor, then bring them indoors. Hozelock warns that trapped water splits those parts, and a 2352 review describes a nozzle that split after frost.
