Grafting tool buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a pencil-thick apple scion in the shed and a row of grafting pruners on amazon.co.uk, and the star line is the first number the card wants you to trust. A grafting tool buying guide for a UK garden asks whether this stamp fits the wood in your hand. The seven listings in our [grafting tool comparison](/hub/garden-tree-and-hedge-shears/grafting-tool) were captured on 20 October 2026. Read the printed diameter, then the named blade profile, then what is really in the box, and only then the price. This page does not name a winner. Peter F. compared those listings, not a graft trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a grafting tool in this set actually is

A grafting tool here is a hand pruner that stamps a matching V, U or omega into a scion and a rootstock so the two pieces can nest. You then bind them until the cambium, the thin layer under the bark, has a chance to join. It is a tool for small, matched wood. It is not a bypass secateur, a lopper or a pole saw, and it is not the long sloping cut of a grafting knife. The Royal Horticultural Society describes pencil-thick scion wood of about 8 mm, collected while it is still dormant. If the scion and the stock are different thicknesses, an omega will not slide sideways to find the cambium. That adjustment belongs on the grafting tool versus a grafting knife page.

Check the printed diameter first

Start with the bullet that states a size, and ask whether your wood is inside it. Yuhtech states twigs and softwoods up to 10 mm, and excludes dry or old hardwood such as jujube and walnut. FUJIWARA states nearly 10 mm. LSLANSOON’s bullets state 5 mm to 12 mm, while a spec field says a cutting width of 35 mm. Keep the bullet. A UK review says it only cuts extremely thin wood. NAYE’s bullets state twigs from 3/16 to 17/32 inch. Do not use the 0.44 inch field as the capacity. Jwthee states a 2 cm cut on a deep V only. Piceioep states 8 mm to 20 mm and does not name a profile. Holy Feather prints no millimetre limit. If the rootstock is thicker than the bullet, skip that tool.

Named profiles and what is in the box

Yuhtech, LSLANSOON, FUJIWARA and NAYE name V, U and omega as replaceable blades. Jwthee names a deep V only. Holy Feather’s listing does not name V, U or omega. Piceioep names none. Then read the contents line. FUJIWARA lists two films, plant tags, a grafting knife, a screwdriver, a wrench and clips. Yuhtech lists three blades, one 3 cm tape and a spare base. NAYE’s title includes tapes and rubber bands. Holy Feather’s bullets include a knife and a bypass pruner. LSLANSOON lists blades. Jwthee’s included-components field says No. The film in these boxes is not nursery grafting tape. A knife in the box does not raise the stamp’s diameter ceiling.

Stars, then price

Only after diameter, profile and box should you read the stars, and you should read where the texts come from. FUJIWARA is 4.1 from 16 reviews, and all 11 stored texts are from the United Kingdom. Holy Feather is 5.0 from two UK reviews in September 2026, and neither reviewer had finished a graft. Yuhtech is 4.1 from 34, with three of 15 stored texts from the United Kingdom. NAYE is 4.4 from 1,240 on the amazon.co.uk line, and none of the 50 stored texts is from the United Kingdom. Piceioep and Jwthee have no review line. A high count on a UK product page is not British gardeners describing a take. Price on this snapshot comes last, from £9.99 to £28.59. The listing score is not a survival rate.

Common questions

What diameter should the listing print before I buy a grafting pruner?
You want a bullet you can compare with the wood, which for a typical dormant scion is around the pencil thickness the RHS puts at about 8 mm. Yuhtech prints up to 10 mm and FUJIWARA prints nearly 10 mm. Holy Feather prints none, so you cannot check it against a branch before it arrives.
Why does one listing say 5–12 mm and another field say 35 mm?
On LSLANSOON the bullets say fruit branches from 5 mm to 12 mm, and a spec field says a cutting width of 35 mm. Use the bullet. The 35 mm figure is a conflict, not a wider capacity. A UK review says the tool only cuts extremely thin branches.
Do I need V, U and omega, or is a deep V enough?
You need the profile named, and you need it to be the shape you will cut on both pieces. V, U and omega on one tool let you change the notch. Jwthee’s deep V is one shape, stated at 2 cm, with no U or omega and no review line. A deep V is enough only when you already want that notch.
Is the film in the box the same as grafting tape?
No. Do not call the film Parafilm or nursery grafting tape. NAYE’s stored reviews describe cling film and rubber bands that do not hold a branch. A UK note on Yuhtech says the tape is hard to bond. The RHS binds whip-and-tongue grafts with grafting tape or raffia.
Can I use the tool on dry hardwood or a thick trunk?
Yuhtech’s listing excludes dry or old hardwood such as jujube and walnut, and caps the cut at 10 mm. A trunk, or any limb past the printed ceiling, is outside these stamps. UK notes on Yuhtech say thicker rootstocks will not cut through. Stop and use a knife method, or ask a nursery, rather than forcing the handles.
Does a high star count on amazon.co.uk mean the reviews are from the UK?
Not by itself. NAYE shows 4.4 from 1,240 reviews on the UK page, and the 50 texts stored from that file are from the United States, India and Australia. FUJIWARA’s smaller 4.1 from 16 is the row whose stored texts are all United Kingdom. Holy Feather’s 5.0 is two UK reviews, and neither person had grafted yet.
