How to choose a slug fence

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have seedlings in a bed, a hosta in a pot, or a gap under the shed, and the search calls all three a slug fence. Those are different purchases. Match the job before you pay: a shaped barrier around a small patch, a collar on one plant, a mesh roll, or a battery band. The [snail fence comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/snail-fence) lists the ten amazon.co.uk products, with prices in pounds. A qualifying purchase from that page can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. read those listings and the public UK pages named below, and did not run a slug trial.

Four things this search mixes up

A continuous fence is for a bed you can close. A collar is one small plant. Mesh in a gap is a plug, even when the title says slugs. A battery fence needs the cells the listing names. Garden Organic suggests six to eight leaves before you set a young plant out, and that does not turn a collar into a fence. Prices from these listings run from about £6.59 to about £61.57. A reviewer built about 66 cm by 33 cm from a 2 m kit, so the title length is the pack until you measure. Matching a job to a listing is the best slug barrier page.

A collar is not a bed

The HanYun set is twelve PET collars at about £12.99, each 21 cm by 21 cm and 12 cm tall, with 4.9 from seven reviews. A bullet describes a 45-degree downward edge, and UK reviews talk about fitting the ring before the plant spreads. BBC Gardeners' World flags a leaf between neighbouring pots as a bridge. Plantura's split, a fence for a bed and a collar until one young plant is sturdy, is an advice site, not a trial. Seven reviews are not a season of lettuce, beside Swissinno's 3.4 from 93.

Copper is a claim, a lip is a shape

The Wisley trial did not find less lettuce damage from copper tape, grit, bark, wool pellets or eggshells. Knitted mesh was not the test piece. The copper mesh or plastic fence page holds that trial and the 2021 foil paper. Swissinno is the only rigid plastic fence here, and it is not electric. A UK review watched a slug climb over, and the corner angle is 30 degrees in a bullet and 135 degrees in the item type. TOONGEEN, 4.3 from 409 at about £9.99, says 5 by 20 feet in the title and 50 cm by 12.7 cm in the field. The FACIACC 12 m roll at about £8.99 and the 6 m roll at about £7.49 share one 3.9 from 28 line.

What a fence will not clear

FiBL splits immigration, which a barrier can change, from slugs and eggs already in the compost. Kerbl's guide says clear them before you trust the band. That is the maker's method, not a success rate, and the about £23.45 listing prints no voltage. Two reviews say mucus breaks the conductor after about a month. Isotronic names four C cells. Kerbl names none. Ferric phosphate pellets are not a fence. Closing the gaps is on the how to install a slug fence page.

Common questions

Do I want a fence, a collar, or mesh?
A fence when the plants share one patch and you can close a line. A collar for a few small plants, fitted before the leaves spread. Mesh for a gap or a sleeve, without treating copper as a trial. A mouse-hole roll can be the right mesh and the wrong slug fence.
Will a collar protect a whole raised bed?
No. HanYun pieces are 21 cm by 21 cm. Twelve cover twelve small plants, with a gap where two rings fail to meet. A raised bed needs the timber measured. Rings will not empty a bed that already holds slugs.
Is copper mesh the same job as a plastic fence?
They are different bets in one search. A plastic fence is a shaped edge. Copper mesh is sold as a deterrent, and the Wisley trial did not find less lettuce damage from copper tape. A cage or a plug is a physical job, not proof that copper turns a slug.
When is a battery fence worth the extra?
When you can ring one bed, you will check it after rain, and you accept the cells. Isotronic is about £61.57 before four C cells. Kerbl is about £23.45 for a stated 20 m, with voltage unprinted. The plastic kit and the collars have no circuit.
Does a fence remove slugs already in the soil?
No. FiBL, and a UK review of the 10 m net, say the animals inside stay inside. Clear the bed first. New compost can bring more in later. A longer fence does not search the soil, whether it is plastic, mesh or a battery band.
What should I ignore in a pure copper title?
The adjective, until you see the metal. One UK review of the about £6.59 Satar Refes roll says the mesh is plastic coloured like copper. Ten reviews cannot settle that listing. Dooaqiin has no star line here. Check the reel when it arrives.
Is a mouse-hole roll a slug fence?
It is mesh that can fill a hole. Titles often name rats or mice beside slugs. On TOONGEEN, one review says a sleeve used as a cage stopped them, and another says slugs climbed it. Buy it to cut. Leave it if you needed a lip you can see.
